Well, this was posted on the IG forum.

Quote:
The puzzle, or part of it, seems to have been solved at the UnFiction forums. Here's what they did to find a solution.

They assigned a color value to each letter and place the code into a javascript generator which produced an image. There is no image but it allowed them to see a repeating pattern that had been unnoticed. Sixsidedsquare removed all the spaces and saw that the repeating pattern occurred every eight characters, leading him to determine that it was likely some sort of binary code. From there it's simple trial and error - replace letters with 1's and 0's until the message can be read.

Here's the result:

QUOTE:
Sometimes, with the last light of evening, the dark, ramshackle trains
depart slowly from the stations;
metallic, dirty, crammed with hurried riders who fall silent while the
whistle says farewell to the platforms;
and the last scraps of newspaper scurry over concrete, under shoes, and
fall to the shining rails;
then, in the evening's slant light, its saffron and certain and sad-
smelling light, the last coaches vanish;
and I am the traveler, I am always the traveler, leaning, barely aboard
and lost in thought;
the traveler who has departed but never arrived, pursuing illusions in
train tunnels;
and then I tell everyone goodbye, and goodbye to myself, waving the
utopic handkerchief;

FIND ME

Apparently this is intended to lead us somewhere. You guys are good at this stuff so... where does it lead?

Uh...so yeah. I'm not good at this stuff. Which is why I come here Laughing There's all sorts of smrt people here Very Happy

If you read the IG thread, it appears that the quote is part of a poem. And I honestly have no idea where to go from here. But I'll see if I can get my little brain going.

Well, we had that a few days ago:

So, I guess that's it (still not sure how it ties up).

Six, do you have a new one? Or... oh, that puzzle hunt sounds kinda fun! Can I play? Smile I'm quite far from Melbourne though...

The Melbourne Uni Puzzle Hunt is a competitive team based thing, so posting about puzzles on an open forums probably isn't the best idea. What could work for anyone wanting to play along though, is to jump into IRC and chat with a few others of us who are playing.

If you haven't got an IRC client the mibbit browser based one is pretty good. To get on:
  • head over to http://www.mibbit.com/chat/
  • click the server button at the topish and type irc.chat-solutions.org
  • type a nick to use into the 'Nick box' (some characters not allowed) and #puzzletome into the 'Channel' box
  • hit the 'Go' button

Anyone is welcome to jump in, but expect that people in there might not be active when you first go in. I'll try to catch people coming in and say hi at least.

As for a new puzzle, I'll add to this post in about an hour, I got an idea that I just need to chisel out.

----
[edit]

Wow, that was a long hour. The chiseling took longer than I expected and I couldn't quite make it how I wanted, so it turned out a bit rough around the edges. Anyway, hope there were no mistakes:

Ok first thing this one made me think of is those amazing Fibonacci disappearing squares, like here, since we have 21x13 and 13x8 rectangles made of what seem like cut up words.

The two styles are used to separate the letters into a series of increasing squared Fibonacci numbers: {1,1,4,9,25,64,169} are the squares of {1,1,2,3,5,8,13}. This is visually expressing one of the many properties of the Fibonacci series, which is that the sum of the squares of the first n Fibonacci numbers is the product of the nth and (n + 1)th Fibonacci numbers.

So many words can be made up though! And I can even read some words vertically on the right edge? Hmmm...

[edit1]
So it seems that after putting all the letters together a sort of riddle should come out, one of those "my first is in ___ but not in ____, my second is in ____" and so on. I think this includes words like laziness, patience, and comprehend. But there's also some sort of "meta" explanation about the puzzle, the solution, and the art of posting? Smile

[edit2]
Spoilered for your puzzling protection! Wink
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The property mentioned above suggests making squares out of those sections of styled text. Then, using those squares as rigid building blocks, put the big and small rectangles back together, following this configuration.

Results in this (I would use code to monospace it but it un-spoilers it):
MYFIRSTISINTHESETUPBU
TNOTINTHEEXECUTION-MY
SECONDISINTHEPUZZLEBU
TNOTINTHESOLUTION-MYT
HRIDISFOUNDWITHPATIEN

ELS-OUT-LIKE-
AN-ANSWER-PAT
H-TO-BE-FOUND
=IT-OFTEN-TUR
NS-AWAY-BUT-I
T-WILL-ALWAYS
-COME-AROUND=

Or more readable:
My first is in the setup but not in the execution.
My second is in the puzzle but not in the solution.
My thrid is found with patience and also with comprehension.
But my fourth is not found with laziness nor waning attention.
My fifth is not part of posting but it is part of a stall.
My last comes with the solving and it also ends it all.

My whole travels out like an answer path to be found:
It often turns away but it will always come around.

Which leaves us with:
1:sp
2:pze
3:pienc
4:bcdfhjkmpqruvxy
5:al
6:slin

SPIRAL

Loved it! and only one little inconsequential typo... good job!

[edit3]
Alright, for my first puzzle here, I think I can share a quick and easy one I made a couple years ago, just to warm up. You're supposed to try to work it out by hand (mostly logic, but a simple calculator is ok to verify the solve), no scripts or spreadsheets, as that would defeat the purpose. Hope you like it.

Find a 3-digit number (all different digits) such that it's a multiple of each of its 3 digits.
Rearrange the same digits to make a different number, this time a multiple of only 2 of its digits.
Rearrange it once again to make a multiple of only 1 of its digits.
Rearrange it one last time to make multiple of none of its digits.

Now convert this last one into letters such that 0=a, 1=b, 2=c, etc., translate, and put a name to it. That's your solve!

I think I'm getting to the last step in rearranging okay. But I can't find a number that (at that point) is a multiple of none of it's digits.
The closest I can find is 573 ("ECG" or "ElectroCardioGram"), which can't be the answer as it is a multiple of it's last digit.

Maybe I've approached it in the wrong way.
Removing any numbers that have 2 or 3 of the same digit.
Removing any numbers that include a zero.
Removing any numbers that include a one.
Etc.

Doing it the other way around, I can see some likely "words" that satisfy the last bit:
BEG
FBI
FIG
GED
GIF
HID
But; they can't be reordered in any way to satisfy the "multiple of each of its 3 digits" part.

The number also cannot have a 3 because if the three-digits of the number add up to a multiple of three, then the whole number is divisible by 3. Therefore, no matter how you rearrange the numbers, it will still be divisble by 3. The same is also true of 9.

It does say "translate" after converting the numbers to letters (from which language should be obvious once you have the word).

The digit elimination approach should leave you with just a few cases to test. Only one satisfies all conditions.

There can also be no 5 because with a 5, the original number would not be able to have 2, 4, 6, or 8...leaving only 7. Then there wouldn't be three different numbers.

EDIT:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
827 = ICH = German for "I"

EDIT 2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
More detailed explanation... 728 is a multiple of all three digits, 872 is a multiple of just 2 & 8, 782 is a multiple of just 2, 827 is not a multiple of any of the digits.

And thus, this time at least, Bob's it! Very Happy

Good job. The clincher was discarding that 5.

Yea, once I got rid of the 5 and determined that the 7 had to be the last digit of the final number, there were only six posibilities for the final number.

I'm not one for making puzzles, more of a puzzler. So, someone can take my turn if they have a good one.

I fear I never would have gotten there as I totally blew off the "0=a, 1=b..." part. My 827 was "HBG".

Well, since my other got eaten up so quickly, I think I'll throw out another quickly by reaching back into the Vault for another Puzzle Time Forgot. Now this one might take a bit longer, as it's another one of my terrible old ones. I looked a little into it and I think it's still solvable (one of the others laying amongst the dust back there in the Vault that I tried was an even worse one than this, and had a glaring spelling mistake to boot). I don't remember the answer, but I'm sure it'll come back to me when someone get's it.

Is that picture attached properly? I can only get a low resolution version of it. Could be that I just suck at forums, though...

Nope, that picture is actually that small. The dude I made it for wanted it small in file size I think, and back then I thought small file size = small image dimensions. You might want to zoom some on it, but all the important details can be made out, sorta.

This is what I could make out:

Code:

2: 5ECD7755    1590523733

7:02458D688     609801864
8: 5EBD8DA8    1589480872
9:02F076499     789013657
-----------    ----------
T:1E96A8528    8211039528

 ABBAACCDDC  737571294684

Upper-right ruler marks:
 |..|.||.||.|.||.|..|.||.
 ||||||||||||||||||||||||
 100101101101011010010110
     96D696       9885334

The interpretation as hexadecimal numbers and adding them up is suggested by the hexagonal "+" signs. But them leading zeroes are giving me doubts about this. No idea what to do with it or with the couple other pieces.

Ah, of course the order must be relevant given the Japanese numbers, so a simple sum of all of them would not be right. Maybe concatenating them all into a huge hex...

02D5D89CC5ECD775501AF549945E48B3E801AEAD337016F8EA8B02458D6885EBD8DA802F076499

Which exceeds my base converter's precision digits (ASCII gives gibberish). Not feeling like converting it as a whole by hand, mostly from lack of confidence that this is the correct path.

The ABBA ACDC bit is giving me dreadful thoughts about a mashup of the two infamous bands. Shocked

Any other ideas?
