I'm glad someone has an idea of where to go with this because I'm struggling - looks like a relatively straightforward alpha-numeric style substitution problem but I'm obviously having a stupid day because I can't go anywhere with it!! Embarassed

Yes, it should.

wow so no one's gettin this or is it very few of us coming here anymore? six, any feedback on my marble box?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
seriously, just do a letter-number sub but any time you get to a 1 or 2 take that and the next digit as one number. then it's just a cryptogram, play a bit with the alphabet and you'll see it's just a rot with some letters omitted.

i really like this thread, especially the potential for experimenting and discussion. so please don't let it die.

That's all correct. It's a somewhat infamous (and specific) encryption method.
But, what's the answer?

I was trying to give others a chance.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If I DISPATCHED AN UNDERLING TO MOVE THIS MESSAGE UNDER PIZZINI, HE'D PLACE IT

I don't have anything ready.

I (eventually!) managed to muddle my way through to the answer - I was on the right track initially but lost patience with guessing which digits came in pairs and which didn't! I thought I was probably oversimplifying things so didn't pursue it!

Never heard of pizzini before - I like it when puzzles teach!

He'd place it...
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

Ahh sorry, I didn't realize the ellipsis meant to complete the sentence. I was reading "he'd place it" as an idiom for "he'd move it" or "he'd send it" or "he'd code it" and thus making the sentence whole.

So... three words, 7 letters, 3 letters, and 4 letters. I'll guess 't _ _' for the second word. I will further speculate for something like '<adverb> t _ _ <noun>', with <adverb> a synonym or related word to 'u _ _ _ r' or 'b _ _ _ w', and <noun> may be some place where you can slip a small piece of paper. I think I'd bet it all on the answer resulting in a somewhat humorous phrase, so I will take a wild guess that the noun is 'd _ _ _'. Now, as for that adverb... the only 7 letter synonym I can think of is 'b _ _ _ _ _ h'. So, my final guess is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
IF I DISPATCHED AN UNDERLING TO MOVE THIS MESSAGE UNDER PIZZINI, HE'D PLACE IT BENEATH THE DOOR

After writing all that and seeing my whole answer, I feel pretty silly because it doesn't make any sense. Laughing

ETA1, wild ass guess #2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...HE'D PLACE IT BETWEEN HIS LEGS ? Surprised (I'm thinking pizzini=little piece Very Happy)

ETA2, wild ass guess #3:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...BENEATH HIS FOOT
or SHOE
or SOLE?
(because the "underling" is such a "little piece" in the organization, so, under himself)

This is turning out much more fun than I thought! I bet all of those are totally missing the point though.

Now I'm totally lost again!

How have you worked out it's a 7,3,4 pattern to complete the puzzle?!!

Try quoting the hint and you'll see why. The forum removes the extra spaces.

You're seriously making me ROFL as you don't know how close you are.
In the intervening years the memorable bit for this little piece of history has dropped off the web to the point that there are really only a couple of sites out there that still mention it.
Try adding "onionskin" to your search.

Ok, now I feel able to join in again!

He'd place it...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...against the wall

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...between his lips

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...without any fuss

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...amongst tin cans

I'm sure there must be a logical way to complete this but I've not achieved a single part of this puzzle unaided so far so I'll keep churning mad guesses!

Ah - simple when you know how! For completeness sake:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
between two toes

I claim no credit for any part of that solve!!!!
