Alright, here we go. This one even continues with the "loneliest place in the world" theme. I updated it with the silly song, inspired by the style of hints in the GW.net thing. Forgive my crappy rhymes. Very Happy

AAAHHHGG IM LOST! Somewhere in California... so, I stopped at this gas station in the middle of nowhere to ask for directions. The place seemed deserted, but out of the back comes this scrawny geeky dude, some middle-aged hill-billy version of Bill Gates, who hands me this "map" and starts "singing" the stupidest "song" I've ever heard:

Quote:
The smallest town you'll ever see
is just the place I'm from.
Don't fret my friend, this map's for free...
just give it back to mom.

On each fork of the road, it's key
to note which way to run.
But please don't go from A to Z,
that's just not how it's done.

Between those two, another three,
and then you'll know you've won.
Trust me, you'll know. Bar none!

You'll find her up there in a tree
as sure as I'm her son,
just ask which one's the one.

Don't stay too long, don't ask for tea.
She's mad as hell, she broke her knee,
her back, her hip, and she blames me!
Beware, she's got a gun!

WTF???

I stood there thinking, "this can't be!" the minute he was gone.

If you can't read the crazy map but rather like the song, a breakfast treat that makes you fat would help you here to, in a snap, get tiny. Can't go wrong! [K? top your treat with this last bit and add a number four]

I'm really fighting the urge to look back through the GW stuff for help on this one; But may have to if I can't come up with a way to even start.

I kinda want to build a maze using the letters and numbers and feel like the song should be telling me where to start. The fact that there are only one of each letter and number fits with the "key" part of the song. The forks never seem to go for long the ways I've tried using them, so I feel like they must be literal "choices" as to which way you're allowed to go. But how to decide?

I always fall down on the riddly bits.

In other words... I got nuthin.

Ah, all the initial hints in the previous one seem to relatively stick out now. You could have perhaps made the range in kilometers (or meters (or some crazy imperial equivalent)) and then mentioned in the text about rounding to the nearest 10 thousand, rather than million. This would meant all the explicit instructions were in the text, though of course then la!uep would have solved the thing in a few minutes Razz

As for this next one, it appears the keys to it all are at my fingertips. I'll have a proper look at it a little later on.

As six has obviously noticed, seems like the 'map' is arranged in exactly the same layout as a standard keyboard...

Duh, just realized there might be a mapping convention issue. Rolling Eyes I know it's not a big deal, but I should have thought of it, just in case there was an odd type among us...

*quietly wishes everyone ruled them yankees*

ETA1: hmm you guys stuck? I doubt this is the problem, but I'll insist, for the odd ones out there: quail with easter rabbit this year!

ETA2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
quality wild eggs really taste yummy
quaint white elephants remember those yaks
queen was especially rusty, tried yoga
question why even rednecks turn yuppie
quit whining! ever restrain that yap?

Ok I think that's enough of that.

Ok, I finally got a little time this morning to try out what I thought was going to be the right method but no cigar. Dunce

So far I've...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
rearranged the 'map' into a standard qwerty keyboard format. Doing this means that a course can be navigated through the letters and numbers within the boundaries of the lines. I was expecting to be able to see a word when I did this (I printed out the rearranged map and drew on it!) but although I can make out a couple of potential letters I can't fashion a whole word.

I'm obviously missing something here. Possibly to do with the small clue on the initial puzzle which I haven't managed to get to the bottom of as yet.

Oh well, I'm sure Six or Rogi will have posted a solve by the time I check in next! Very Happy

Windmill, you're doing great. That's like 95% of the work. Now just do as the dude said in the song (the stuff about his mom is just filler). That's it! The small clue is just a way to reassure you that it is the right answer.

Map?

Do I at least have the "map" rearranged correctly?

Well if you haven't we're both screwed! Laughing

I've got the same (albeit not as neatly since I used the same layout style as la!uep's original puzzle map). Can see various possible letters in it but I'm clearly not interpreting the dude's guidance properly!!

ETA - as well as trying to spot letters made out by the gaps between the lines/made up by the lines, I've also taken the quickest path from A-Z noting the letters on the way and also the letters not crossed, I've tried to spot another way of travelling since "...please don't go from A to Z" without any inspiration, checked which letters the choice of direction (forks) appear on. Nothing gives!!!

Can't work out what the "Between those two, another three," is getting at either.

There's clearly something staring me in the face but the more I look the less I see at the minute!

I might just take to guessing what breakfast treat would make me fat - Full English?!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My understanding was that the letters and lines formed a kind of "rat maze". The clue that said not to go from A-Z led me to believe that we're supposed to go from Z-A. Doing this, I came up with ZXSDERTYHNMJKIU7654321QA. Don't know if I'm headed in the right direction at all, but even so, can't figure out what to do with what I have.

Both of you are in the right direction. Make sure you do exactly as he says:

Check the very first post on this thread. The way to apply it here was inspired by another fortunate confusion in this thread, featuring ABBA and AC/DC. However, this "confirmation path" concept may be a bit flawed as it's actually a little harder (for most people) than figuring it out through the map.

Back to staring at the damn map for inspiration then!

I'm pretty sure you guys have the layout for the map correct.
Outlining the letters individually, you get nice, clean borders for a map.
If you shift any of the rows, at all, the borders no longer align so correctly.

Could "note" refer to musical notes? They don't seem to be in any common locations on the map.
A is at an end.
B and C are dead ends.
D and E are in a "good" path.
F and G are in a "dead" path.

ETA: "Bacon" as a breakfast treat hadn't crossed my mind. I was thinking along the "doughnut" line, for some reason. I feel like we're looking for a tinypic URL, but have no idea how to form one from this.

Damn, and I thought that was too direct. Hmm... maybe it is and you're all trying to see more than it's there?

Give me the right choices, and nothing but the choices. Smile
