I was wondering how we were supposed to get 9 out of 35. Now it's divisible by 4, at least.

ETA: Rogi, just an FYI, it's Bangkok. You're using the pr0n version. Wink

1996NY

I'd guess one has to look at the following event:
Quote:
On July 17, 1996, at about 20:31 EDT (00:31 on July 18 UTC), the Boeing 747-131 flying the route (tail number N93119) exploded in mid-air and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York. All 230 people on board (two pilots, two flight engineers, 14 flight attendants, 212 passengers) were killed and the aircraft was destroyed.

(Quoted from: Wikipedia - TWA Flight 800)

So it's July 17, 1996 20:31 EDT, I think...

The only thing I can come up with for 1883CANAM is that that is the year US and Canadian railroads adopted timezones. November 18, 1883, noon. I'm still at a loss on 1988NAPLES. Heck, I can't even figure out if that's Florida or Italy. I think it's time to press the kl00 button.

Good job on the 1883 timezones event.
As you may have noticed, not all the items are disasters of some form. It's just that when you're looking for events that can be retrospectively distilled to a specific time/hour, those compose the bulk. Some of the items kinda bomb when classifying them as disasters as loss of life wasn't high.

I was hoping that at this point you all would be able to connect the dots enough to extrapolate the more elusive ones and go on to the first part of the "before and after" bit.

Thanks Rogi. That makes 1988NAPLES April 14 'at about 8 p.m' And I think that's all of them. I'll update the post above and try to figure out what the heck this all means...

How about I give you an action word for those that might cause you problems or need a little better definition?
Didn't want to let this go too long as there are only so many hours in a day and I'm sure somebody else would like a go.

2003NY - Crash
1969SEAOFTRANQUILITY - Landed
1992HOMESTEAD - Landfall
2003TEXAS - The site I found gave the EST time as CST
1944PORTLANDWEYMOUTH - Departure
1963FITCHVILLE - Smoke
1942OFFCAPEMAY - Torpedoed

Going through Pancito's list I found that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
if you use the hour of the event (on the 24 hr clock) to represent a letter so that 1am is A, 2am is B etc you get (with a bit of twiddling)
CONNECTCARLAGWITHELECTRICLOCOMOTING
but I'm stuck there for now. Whether that's meant to be Carla G, Carl A.G. or Car Lag, I dunno....

Tremendous work, although I think you transcribed the last couple of letters incorrectly – seems to be

locomotive
to me.

Google hasn't immediately thrown the answer to me and I'm short of time currently – I'm sure someone will mop up the solve pretty quickly now…

Would you believe that when I woke up this morning I had figured out that it might be a numbers=letters? Anyway, good work cjr22. I wasn't looking forward to going through all that. I'm thinking this might be one of those word in the middle things. Something like 'Carl A.G. X, X electric loco.' My first thought was Westinghouse since they make diesel electrics, but no. I still don't find anything, and don't see how that gives a score, but maybe it'll pop into clear when it happens...

Hmmmm... Agee maybe?

I was thinking along the same lines last night, just didn't get a chance to get back to it. Nice work!

There is an AG class of locomotive, but Carl AG doesn't sound familiar

I wonder if Storz [sexless] type connectors are used on air brakes. Kinda makes sense if you want to be able to hook up a car in either direction. I think I'm fixated on Westinghouse...

@Toasty>> I like the Carl AG Storz, but who knows?

My "connect" clue wasn't meant to point to Storz connectors. It was just to give you the first word for the next part.
You've got it all but for one that's late by almost 4 days. All of us huddled around the TV that night. I'll never forget the date.

I seriously don't know how I got that wrong. One of those events that if you lived through it you remember where you were and what you were doing. I even used to celebrate it. *sigh*

CONNECT CARTAG WITH ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE????

That doesn't seem right.... Anyone?

ETA: NASA site has both the UTC and '04:17:40 p.m. EDT' which would make that CARPAG.

How about this? Very Happy
