Time to pull the plug on this one.

It was "CAR TAG".
Possible interpretations for that could be "license", "plate" or "VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)".

It was the latter. Making the "before and after" from the middle of the puzzle "VIN [DIESEL] ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE".

"DIESEL" doesn't follow the format asked for in the requirements, so another look at the title hints at the need to complete the other "before and after", where running the bases occurred on the front-side.

Converting "DIESEL" from Base36 to Base10 (No other conversions give a 9-digit number as a result) gives "816983373" which would be my team's scores for all the innings. The final score would then be, 48.

Sorry for letting this one take up the thread for so long. I just didn't think it'd be that hard.

Too many steps?
Poor hinting?
Bad design?
Too tedious?
Lemme have it.

So, Pancito... Ya got another one ready to go, yet?

Just some thoughts:
- The base conversion was a bit tedious, but really didn't bother me.
- Using local times is okay, except in the case of the apollo landing, where it was a bit ambiguous: should we use UT because it is off-earth? or EST because it launched from FL? or CST because control was in TX?
- CAR TAG didn't work for me for two reasons. First, I would not have been led to VIN from car tag; second, the before and after parts were not symmetric in their method, adding to the confusion. The before part has an extra step before the connection is made. With all of the other steps involved in this puzzle, I think it would have worked better just using VIN from the get-go. To keep all the bases, you could use something like CONNECTION VIN WITH ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE.

Anyway, I enjoyed it nonetheless. Thanks for the puzzle.

I tried to keep it, symmetric. There were two before and after parts:
Convert Bases >> Vin >> Diesel << electric locomotive << Convert Base

Let me clarify. After you find letters from the rounded hours, you must replace CAR TAG with VIN before progressing further. No similar thing needs to be done with ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE. That's what I was talking about by not symmetric. Thus, you might be inclined to either do nothing with CAR TAG, or try to replace ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE with another word before trying to find the connection.

car tag = VIN

Vin Diesel

Diesel Electric Locomotive

Just like the "Before and After" category on Wheel of Fortune

I see, now. Thanks for the feedback. Very Happy

Nope. I have one in the works but it would take a while. Someone else go, please.

I just couldn't make the leap from Car Tag to VIN. I COULD have gotten to Diesel, I suppose, since I even mentioned Diesel Electrics at least once. Getting from there to a base 36 to ten conversion... idk. I was constantly trying to figure out how to get to a score, and that never occurred to me.

I actually had a good time with this one. I like that kind of research/digging puzzle. Doesn't bother me a bit when I can't figure out what to do with the info. Sometimes I get a good idea, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I do after someone else has already figured out what to do next. It's all good.

Like I said, Someone else go, please.

More feedback from me...

Firstly, I loved the puzzle. Loads of fun. Now, hopefully constructive criticism.
Maybe because I'm non-US, I would have never have got cartag -> VIN, and I agree that extra step of cartag -> VIN doesn't really fit in.
Similarly, I didn't get Diesel -> electric locomotive. I have heard of Vin Diesel Wink
I think DIESEL should have been the final answer. The steps leading up to that point were well clued, and obviously the right answer once you got there. The final step isn't, at least to me.

But other than that, excellent. I was particularly impressed with the creativity in choosing the hours of events to be letters. I've never seen that before.

Feedback

Rogi,
The first part of the puzzle with the different bases was not too hard. The base clue and the progression was fairly easy to spot.

Looking up the dates and times for the multiple entries really helped me with my history. There were some events that I had forgotten about (I was only 3 when Apollo landed on the moon). I liked the idea of researching those to provide the next step in the puzzle.

Trying to find the correct numbers to progress was rather difficult. cjr22 really got the 'ah-ha' moment and helped move us forward. I think the difficulty in rounding the times certainly came from the designation of which time zone to use.

That part of the puzzle gave us 'CONNECTCARTAGTOELECTRICLOCOMOTIVE'. Trying to connect the two, even with the before-and-after clue, was rather challenging. I still don't understand the relationship to DIESEL base 36 and a baseball game.

I think a better end to your puzzle might have used the clue 'CARNUMBERRUDOLFENGINE' and connect that to baseball. Then we may have been able to arrive at Vin Diesel and use that to get to the 7/21/07 celebration of Sammy Sosa's 600th homerun (more history) and give you the results of the game that day for the Rangers -vs- Indians.

Oh BTW,
freakin' hard puzzle and you must've spent some time developing those dates/times to match your goal. You are certainly über historian!!

My heroes have always been...

Since no one else has put one up I'll give this another shot. Almost all of the people are in the Hall of Fame. If they aren't, they have stuff there, except for maybe one exception. I didn't use any negative stats, like hits allowed, for pitchers... Since this is a math problem you will be expected to show your work. Very Happy Sorry for the huge attachment, but I don't want you squinting to figure stuff out. That's not the point.

Not sure what part of a person's stats we're supposed to use.

Take Johnny Evers on the first one. Is it all-time Double plays? His personal best of 73 in 1914? Just those with Tinker and Chance? And if the latter, is it for one year or for the 1906-1908 seasons? I'd guess it's the last one since that's the most famous stat. But, this could take some serious time. I'm not a big baseball fan, so if I'm missing something obvious, somebody let me know.

Edit: Had to reboot and fix my laptop keyboard to correct the spelling errors.

Career. Except where obviously otherwise, like "streak."

Well, one of the answers is indeed 42, but not the final.

I found all but one (plus one of which I'm a little uncertain), and making a guess at that one leads me to a final answer of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Ricky Henderson

But I wouldn't be surprised if that's wrong. Smile
