I'm gonna say good effort, even though I didn't see the steps. But no. Who are you missing?

ETA: I can also say that based on your answer you probably aren't very close...

I'm missing D2, and I may have the first of the final equation wrong. All the rest I'm pretty sure about.

Here's my work:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A1 = Johnny Evers
A2 = Jackie Robinson
A3 = Joe Dimaggio
A4 = Hank Aaron
A5 = Reggie Jackson
B1 = Ted Williams
B2 = Charles Bender
B3 = Eddie Gaedel
C1 = Kirby Puckett
C2 = Lou Gehrig
C3 = Don Drysdale
C4 = Larry Doby
C5 = Willie Mays
D1 = Cy Young
D2 = ?
D3 = Mickey Mantle
D4 = Barry Bonds
D5 = Juan Marichal
E1 = Phil Niekro? Hoyt Wilhelm
E2 = Archibald Graham

A = 692 + 42 + 56 + 2297 - 2597 = 490
B = (521 + 255) * 1/8 = 97
C = 2304 - 2130 + 29 + 253 + 660 = 1143 1116
D = 749 + ? - 3 + 514 + 52 = 1312 + ? = ?

7 1 + 490 + 97 + 1143 1116 - ? + 1 = 1738 1732 1705 - ? = ?

ETA: Fixed E1

I did this very late last night, so I could have messed it up.

Talkin' Baseball

Nice work. I figured Chief Bender , Cy Young and Hoyt might take a while, but evidently not. Your math is wrong on one of the completed sets, and you are telling me that the only one you didn't figure out actually has his name showing??? How soon we forget.

There are a few interesting stories embedded in this, but Hoyt Wilhelm's homer has to be one of the weirdest...

The number on the uniform threw me, but it was who I thought it was

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
D2 = Bobby Bonds

A = 692 + 42 + 56 + 2297 - 2597 = 490
B = (521 + 255) * 1/8 = 97
C = 2304 - 2130 + 29 + 253 + 660 = 1116
D = 749 + 332 - 3 + 514 + 52 = 1312 + 332 = 1644

1 + 490 + 97 + 1116 - 1644 + 1 = 61* Roger Maris HR

Well, I don't have the time right now to come up with a new puzzle. I do have two that I made for another function a few months ago. Here's the easier of the two:

Play It Again, Sam

I'd assume it's an assumptive reference to this:

EDIT: Note: Full solution doesn't display in IE.

Do we need an original / unpublished puzzles only rule? Anyway...

One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas I'll never know.

The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears it is true.

It's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards.

You've got to find some way of saying it without saying it.

When I tell people I'm a comedian they say, 'Oh, are you funny?' I say, 'No, it's not that kind of comedy.'

The evolution of sense is, in a sense, the evolution of nonsense.

Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something.

I love mankind; it's people I can't stand.

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.

Why do they cover Paul's songs but never mine?
