...and here I meant to go back and look at some of the missing letters and such from that program (like "Whops" missing an o and such) then I forgot about it entirely. I think that's a really good idea...

Helpful (hopefully) transcript:
Hollywood Glitz
A concert Under the "Stars"
1. HELLO HOLLYWOOD The music of Gene Kelley
2. NOW, DANCE A LITTLE CLOSER _____________ Julia Roberts
3. PROUD TO BE A AMERICAN AEROSMITH SONG FROM ARMAGEDON
4. WHOPS THERE GOES ANOTHER ONE! Silly songs from "Shrek II and III"
5. HOOP IT UP remember the titans & 9/11 tribue medley
6. star w ars
7. MANS BEST FRIEND_songs about dogs and sports
"ENCORE"
"FEEL IT IN THE AIR TONIGHT" - AIR BUD THROUGH THE YEARS

Edited for bad typing.
Edited again for MORE bad typing, and now with an analysis:

What's wrong?

Why is "Stars" in quotes?
1. extra "e" in Kelly, and also doesn't make sense.
2. I'm thinking of the m-rotor text at the bar scene here. Note "Now, dance a little closer" + Julia Roberts does not pull up anything in google. Also there are several extra underscores here.
3. missing "n" from "an", and "d" from Armageddon. Also, the song was "I don't want to miss a thing"...
4. missing "o" from whoops, and who uses Roman Numerals for a kids movie?
5. Just odd... "remember the titans" is a football movie
6. No caps, and an extra space. No underline either
7. The underscore extends past the title. Also... just odd.
As to "feel it in the air tonight", is this referring to the Phil Collins song (just called "In the Air Tonight") or Naturally 7 - Feel It (in The Air Tonight)? Here's some sport related junk about the song from Wikipedia:

"Since the song's release, "In The Air Tonight" has been the most played song on PA systems of NFL stadiums, and has become almost a tradition to some players. Some players, most notably all-pro linebackers Derrick Brooks and Ray Lewis, even sing the song while in a play. The song's popularity among NFL players was the subject of an NFL Films piece on ESPN.

The song has been used as entrance music for a number of players and teams of various sports, including the University of Miami football team, NBA team the Miami Heat, and boxers Shane Mosley, Riddick Bowe, and Jermain Taylor. Pro basketball player Kevin Garnett is often seen mimicking the drum solo in timeouts and refers to it as "one of his favorite songs", and it is also used during pre-game introductions at Boston Celtics games. The song has also been used during the 2008 Montreal Canadiens playoff games, before the players come out on the ice."

I think you guys are onto something here because all the extra underscores and the forte's leading to music. I'll try and take a look at everything in a bit

On a totally unrelated note, ARG's are awesome. I just found a money drop from www.stoptheinternational.com and it was about $200! Check it out, there might be one in your city!

EDIT - Some STI-related posts that previously followed are now merged with the STI topic -xnb

Gratz. I was going to nab that one, but saw you were already out to get it & I don't get out of work until 6:00 Sad

sorry about that. I bailed on work early to head over to McKee. I think someone was there before I was because the code was already entered on the lock and I had a hell of a time getting the lock opened so someone may have tried and then gave up.

Maybe move the www.stoptheinternational.com discussion to an appropriate board guys? This has very little to do with diary code-breaking . . .

Air Bud and Pianos

Thought I'd type in my stupid handle this time.
Air Bud. What is this basketball thing? Was that just to help work out the map? Why do they get so into basketball? This is partly just the PMs being bastards. Confused

Under the "Stars", well Blackstar for a start.

e n d o
w is wrong in star w ars

well that's 'endow'. woo!

' missing in MANS
and that underscore. Somebody loves underscores.
(If there's a connection with the diary so far I'm feeling stupid.)

In the air tonight ... if it links with Basketball they're right into it.

Sigh. That music at the end of the video. What is it again? Anyone know the melody?

I'm fairly certain the G.o.D.S.E.E.D. fragments in the video are intended to look like Magatamas, not the letter "p". That specific design is what had me thinking about RPGs the first time I saw the video as the magatama is something from Japanese history/mythology that gets used in video games and anime frequently.

I always assumed the godseed fragment icons were supposed to look like the head/mask of Sachiel, one of the "angels" of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

After staring at page 8 all week this week, I just noticed that the last two characters of the cipher are "sB". If you reverse them, it's "Bs" or Blackstar.

I have to cut out for the weekend, so I'm kind of posting this in case someone else wants to take a stab at it.

Here's the code in reverse order. I have a slightly different interpretation of how to read the letters (ie. G vs. 6 and Z vs. 2) compared to what others have posted in the thread.

Bs
6_2p25
B2BGƒ1
2F2Sfb
HppFF
5BF_BFF
'pFF'
_sFFFp
_'ƒ2pzzB
GBsFTFB
TƒGF1p
FHƒzp2z
ƒ5BGHBF
BpFƒFT
HF5BF_
p'FBzz
MGTG5
_ƒƒ2B
.HB1FFT

Hmm, if the Bs should be reversed, it might mean the whole thing is backwards too. ....which might help once we eventually figure out this code *laugh*.

I really wanna put a fire under the PM's asses. We're obviously at a stand still and they usually feed us a clue by this point...or at least something to give us a glimmer of hope. 2 weeks since Central Park and as far as this puzzle we've got nothing

i agree, Boston. this is quickly becoming a ton of time spent for nothing. what once was the coolest experience in the World has deteriorated into nothingness without question.

Bonus?

a diary that says nothing?

months invested for this?

there is no forward movement (or any hope thereof at least at this point) and the experience has stalled. wish it was different, but whatever.

peace...

That's all you get for today...
all guesses

"That's all you get for today..." is what the ladies said.
Which could mean in that drop. But obviously, given the tweet about 'the curfew', they are declaring a pause.

There's a couple of possibilities, which are all OOG so you may wish to stop reading here.

Having worked for a small media company there's likely been a number of stages worked out, and funding is contingent on completing each. So they have fulfilled "BONUS?" the first phase of this thing and have to now see if it was worth the outlay. The client (unless it's in house) will want a report about the ARG's profile. It would need the team to put together a document and get approval for the next batch of dark dollars to get moving. Even when it's approved, they'll have to go out and generate more media... and it's snowing.

At a guess there's about three people working on this and that means they're pedalling furiously to keep it in motion while also reporting.

Either they are approved for the next stage, which means a relaunch, or their client (who we may as well call Blackstar) will say no it's not worth the outlay and the ARG gets stopped. Either way, the payload I think is set to deliver later in 2009.

I agree that we could use a clue.

We discussed this two months ago.

independent args have a tenancy to die out. to the pm, i say: bloody well time to get us a puzzle/drop/COMMERCIAL TIE IN or u risk losing the group.

Does a successful indie arg exist? Must there be a commercial product for the thing to work?

fwiw, I ain't going anywhere, and I don't think a subforum is the kiss of death for *any* ARG, but that is, of course, coming from my own unique perspective which is shiny and snowflake-like like all other perspectives. Smile

There's been a bunch of indie ARGs that have done well over time. It's such an open question, though. Are you asking if they've been successfully concluded? That they were fun? That they had 'enough' puzzles?

Jetpack

CONCLUDED! Fiction needs a beginning, middle, and end, right? How does that fit with the curve (whatever it might be) of audience for chaotic fiction?

U, us, yeah we're in it...but compared to the beast's millions? TDK's readership? We're alpha users, tip of the iceberg, and we're just waiting to get this viral thing going. We need meat, and I speculate that getting users beyond 10k or so requires a commercial product.

It's been interesting to me to find that people are actually DISAPPOINTED to find out this isn't a commercial. Both TIMM and 13lights were fun, but I've concluded that the medium is good for commercials and less so for actual fiction. I'm sorry to say that, based on these two ARGs, the biggest potential for the medium is as a marketing gimmick.

I remember when lessonstolearn.net went live with a puzzle trail for the PMs of Project Mu, we were all sort of stupid and stuck until I showed the first bit to my friend/boss Andy, who is a theatre person and not at all a puzzler, nor did he really understand any of my babbling about ARGs.

He pointed at the screen and said, "Shouldn't you be doing this?" -- I can't even remember what the puzzle was (Maybe if Giskard sees this post he can point and laugh and tell me), but it was something so simple a newcomer saw the flow and direction of it, and after I blushed a million shades of red for not solving it myself, I whooped and hollered and was so glad I had shown the puzzle to someone else that it didn't matter that I was too focused and into the context to see it.

Maybe we just need to start showing it to others. Do a little networking.

Make that hive mind work, yo.

You know?
