Frustrated in DC (Part 2)
Or "Have ideas, will travel?"

Back in October, I updated my 'elevator' profile in the "PM Recruitment" thread to include the following types of opportunities I was interested in:

  • Using innovative concepts for narrative interaction OR
  • Derives narrative from infrequently used genres (ie. Horror, Romance, etc.) OR
  • Allows for leadership and initiative
While working on one ARG, I started to keep a notebook with concepts and ideas that I thought could be interesting metaverses.

Now, I'll admit the concepts or ideas may not be entirely original given how many different variants of CF/ARGs have taken place.

The catch is that I wouldn't necessarily know that and don't know where the best sounding board is to figure that out.

Suggestions?

There will always be the players that will be attracted to one particular form or theme over the other. For example, I love horror thus I will lurk horror ARG's, write about them, think of ideas to turn them into my own game, and even discuss with my friends about my thoughts to see if what I consider hair-raising is the same with them.

Because of my involvement with that genre though I do have ideas that are not completely original. If the chilling phone call was to never be used because of Scream then we would all be in trouble. Instead of hitting my head on the desk trying to come up with the next best way to skin the cat however I have found it far more productive trying to figure out how this particualr gimmick ties best into the story. So in the phone call example it needs to lend to the overall arc and not be something so individualistic that it stands alone.

So if I were in your shoes I would want to work with PM's that have a clear picture of what the story is and where it is going over a PM that is hired to come up with an original idea for just one portion.

I hope that makes sense.

Which I concur, any gimmick or Maguffin should serve a purpose in the narrative and in advancing the narrative, it does not replace the narrative though.

I believe Chekhov's quote is:
"If in the first act, you have a gun hanging on the wall. It should be fired in the following.."

Yes, that makes complete sense and agree.

To some degree, my frustration on concepts and ideas is not having a mentor (or even a writer's circle) that can look at the idea and go
"Not so sure that would work on it's own" OR
"Interesting.. What media platforms would you use and how?"

Yeah but you do. Smile

You have this place, you have twitter since many ARG PM's religiously are on there lately, and you have ARGFest to combine ideas with rum. I still fondly remember Brian and I drinking at the lobby of the hotel in SF and him telling me "I have an idea. Here, look at this coin with a cat on it."

Very Happy

Anyways, if you ever need to bounce anything of me let me know.

Yes.

While I think that it a bit unfortunate that ARGFest is the only real large-scale meetup of the ARG community all year (I mean, come on! We have all these great ideas and people; wouldn't it be nice to be able to get all of those great minds together more than once a year for a few days?) you do have the unfiction forums (the PM forums aren't QUITE as active as I'd like, but they're still great). You also have the SIG mailing list, you do have Twitter (although there isn't as much actual ARG talk on there, it's a great way to network) you have #unfiction... there are a lot of places you can get together and get ideas flowing.

Also, check your PMs soon. Wink
