In case anyone was still on the fence about whether deathscent is trolling or not, there you go. Not like it's even subtle or anything.

i haven't had as good a laugh at your comment from sheer picturing what you were picturing; if you don't believe me or think i'm trolling, go ahead and think so. i've not much else to say on this topic.
i'm also saying 'you retards' because you're not understand what i'm saying; you were blowing my words way too far out of context.

You could've found a better term, though, no?

I play Pokemon Diamond sometimes. I'm pretty old, too.

given that i'm more of an impulse type person, i tend to speak/write without much thought, and to me, it's usually the most accurate depiction of what i wanted to get across at the time... unless, of course, i actually reread it in a completely different perspective, and then i'm left with trying to understand what i really was trying to get across, so i then end up spending an unfathomable amount of time trying to rewrite it until i get down what i truly wanted to have gotten down in a different set of words that mean, most usually, the exact same thing.
to replace retards, i will instead use the words: "...ignoramuses, most obviously without the attachment of lawyer to the definition,..."

also, i'm spam leveling my ponyta; only fire pokemon i've ever found, about to get badge #7 D:

edit: the word attachment doesn't feel write... whatever.

You equivocate retardation with being ignorant? I have a friend who has a learning impairment. I'll have to tell this to her, she will get a laugh!

You equivocate retardation with impairment? I have MANY friends who have disabilities of all sorts; I'll rather not tell them your amazing because some of them suffer sever depression.
And, if you would be so kind as to stop trying to troll me, I would ask that you please understand that I used 'retards' in a more... modern, thrown about manner, to which the connotation of 'ignoramus' would apply easily. I was not seeking the most derogatory application of the series of phonemes which form the definition of the most negative applied towards the unfortunate, but, again, instead the definition seen as to apply to... people that are, I suppose, ignorant of the matter at hand, and the exact application of the words presented.
I will also choose to not repeat myself.
Also, I ask that you actually tell this to your 'friend;' I'm sure they'll see you a new light if it finally clicks in the simplicity of your own error.

OK, guys, we're descending into pedantry well beyond what's useful at this point.

I was gonna suggest that we all consult a dictionary in order to utilize more interesting words from this point forward, but I think the first issue is that we not call each other names - it's bad form, and against the forum guidelines as well.

What you may mean by a word can be completely different for someone else. Accepting that, and working with the community to play harder and better is just one of the noble goals we can pursue here at Unfiction.

Hivemind, I ch-ch-ch-choose you!

I cannot believe you are arguing about the use of "the r-word". Responsible adults don't use that word.

From a recent campaign:

Quote:
Make no mistake about it: WORDS DO HURT! And when you pepper your speak with "retard" and "retarded," you are spreading hurt. So stop it. Stop saying "retard" and "retarded." Those words suck! You are better than that and you definitely do not need to be "that guy."

There is no longer any acceptable occasion to lace your dialogue with the words "retard" and "retarded." Without fail, those words are the stuff of hurt. They, straight up, are. So, stop it! Stop using the "R-word."

The 7 million people with intellectual disabilities (around the planet) who are on the receiving end of this hate speak are genetically designed to love unconditionally. These "retards" are NEVER going to return your vitriol. Ever! So what could possibly be the up-side of continuing to use the "R-word" in your daily discourse?

For an already off-topic thread, this has really veered off the rails. Talk about TIMM and its PMs or go home.

Don't know if this should be moved to a different area of the forums now or not... If so, I apologize for replying in this (now 0ff-Topic) thread.

I have to somewhat disagree here krystyn. I don't think there is any acceptable way of calling someone a retard. I would go into more detail but I don't think it would make my point clearer.

Bottom line. It's wrong.

I can't believe I agree with a Texan. That's a first! Very Happy

I think it was an exceptionally poor choice in words myself, but I am asking that we either take this into individual conversations in other venues (IM, e-mail, private messages), or we steer the conversation back to actual game topics.

BONUB!

I don't think I like your quote, but although this is off-topic I do think there's no wrong time to combat privilege-based oppression and address oppressive/derogatory rhetoric.

"Genetically designed to love unconditionally" is a gross oversimplification. There are many forms of intellectual disabilities, and they are not all the same. However, in at least many of these, those who are disabled are still human beings with complex emotions. To imply otherwise is a gross oversimplification and an Othering one -- it casts the intellectually disabled as something less than human, some curio object, and that level of simplification does our fellow human beings a significant disservice. Because they are not intellectually abled in the same way as other people does not make them one-track creatures programmed with a single imperative: LOVE. Intellectually disabled individuals are human beings just as much as those of us who are (for the time being) abled, and to suggest otherwise, to paint them in a single broad-brushstroke of one emotion robs them of the dignity and equality to which all people are owed, and furthers a dangerous and patently inaccurate stereotype which reinforces privilege and oppression.

I know the quote wasn't your personal writing, but I thought I'd address it. I know you meant only to reinforce the gross inappropriateness of the word "retard" as a pejorative in any setting, but well-meaning furtherances of institutional and unconscious privilege/oppression mechanisms are the most insidious, and thus can be the most important to call attention to. <3

Also, deathscent, you may or may not be telling the truth, but there are less douchey ways of going about it than "I received a message, can't tell you what's in it, won't tell you WHY I won't tell you, don't have to, why are you uptight lozers getting so defensive, FINE IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME WHO NEEDS YOU ANYWAY, YOU'RE ALL LOZERS IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME." This was the subtext of your messages. As it happens, there are ways to communicate what you're trying to say without sounding like you're a species Bag of the genus Douche. And generally if you want people to give a shit about what you're saying, you should try and communicate in a more constructive manner. (To be fair, this paragraph is not really an example of that; if I held out any hope you'd give a shit about what I'm saying, I'd have opted not to keep making douchebag references. Alas, I lack that faith in you.)

I think the chances deathscent is telling the truth are small to nonexistant. The ol' "I have secret information that I can't/won't share" is a bit of trolling so old it predates the internet, and is thus so easily recognised that it rarely gets any traction at all except on forums catering to the very young, such as video game forums ("Yeah, my dad works for Nintendo so I get to playtest the Wii2, but I cant say anything about it or else my dad will have to commit hari-kari, it's some kind of law in Japan or something.")

The only way to put an even remotely positive spin on any of this is the very thin chance that deathscent thought that by trolling the forums he could somehow get people talking again and keep TIMM alive, but I think the "retards" comment erased even the slightest possibility that he was acting in anything resembling good faith. When someone resorts to grade-school insults, they lose any presumption of good faith.

Is this still going on?

Let it go... everyone. who cares if he's telling the truth or not? so the accounts are 'still active'. great. Let them be. If the game starts up sometime, it'll start up sometime. Arguing over whether this guy's a troll or not is just a waste of time.

Have a Brownie
