What type of encryption is this?

Hey guys, need some help with an encrypted e-mail address. So more or less it is (cypher)@websitedomain.com

this is what we are given:

4.7.4 1.8.7 3.3.3 6.1.2 5.3.4 4.11.5 6.1.4 3.3.2 1.3.5 6.2.1 5.1.8

Not quite sure what kind of encryption this is, and we are stumped! Thanks Very Happy

EDIT: Figured it out! Thanks everyone!

Bad part is there is no other reference, just this string of encoded numbers.

EDIT: here is a Screen shot of the BBS Screen: [content omitted]

Geeze, I dunno about all this secrecy on the forum (and in IRC). I mean, the rest of the world (i.e. Mapmaker) is good enough to help you solve the cipher, but cannot know where it came from (and thus won't have an opportunity to get interested in the game and involved)?

This query was related to the Jejune Institute topic, specifically about a cipher ( 4.7.4 1.8.7 3.3.3 6.1.2 5.3.4 4.11.5 6.1.4 3.3.2 1.3.5 6.2.1 5.1.8 ) that was based on the attached image from the EPWA terminal. Mapmaker solved it in about 2 minutes.

When I read through that topic, I see many potential Terms of Service violations, which is pretty sad. And stuff like people having edited their posts (rather than just having spoilered them) to remove posted information that might be useful to other players (and form a useful part of the enduring record of the experience, which is one of the things that is good about these forums).

I would think this particular cipher would be a glaring example of why these forums work best when you share information, so you can get other players' help when you need it. You would not have the solve for this cipher now without having asked for help, and the least you can do is respect everyone else out there by sharing what Mapmaker so generously shared with you:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Mapmaker's solve, using the text above the coded triplets as the basis for a Beale code, was sleepwalker.

Now, I do understand based on a discussion we had in IRC that the people running this thing don't apparently get the collaboration model that tends to operate here. But, whether they do or don't, unfiction has both a Terms of Service and a certain set of ethics, and just because they seem to want you to violate those because it suits their model of game play doesn't mean you should or have to do so. And you really can't have it both ways: Deleting information you post on these forums (by editing it out later) because you then decide you want to keep it secret from other players is not good.

I wholeheartedly agree with everything xnbomb said. I'm sure that he and the other site admins will stay on top of any TOS violations.

I wanted to add that I personally find taking credit for solving something someone else solved...or not crediting the solve to the person who made it...as disrespectful and just plain rude.

If plain manners aren't good enough to convince you to credit the people who helped you, and leave the data for other people to share in, you might consider your own self-interest. I can't speak for anyone else here, but I would think twice about assisting someone who has asked for help and then deleted all the information about the puzzle and the solve.

Well said rose.

I would not have tried to help if I had known that the puzzle solve was not going to be shared.

Wow... well first off I apologize and I meant no offense to anyone.

Second, I do appreciate the help, I truly do.

Finally, I wasn't sure how to handle the situation. I understand what the PM is saying because he does not want the "experience" to be ruined due to the fact that this "experience" relies on visiting the city itself, and more than half of the fun is not know what is going to happen. But I do understand where you are all coming from as well.

I now know I cannot come to UF for help in this issue, so trust me it wont happen again. So, please understand where I am coming from and please do not be insulted, that was never my plan.

Thank you.

Jejunism and Shared experience.

I have to say that, being an avid player on JeJune, I have found the goings on in the forum to be both confusing and disheartening at times. The in-game/out-of-game shenanigans alone are frustrating enough.

What confuses me the the most is the lack of respect for the idea of a SHARED experience, which can only happen by sharing the data you collect along the way. It also confuses me that we are not considered smart enough to both share the data and also go out and take on the experiences offered in the real world.

That said, I know this belongs in a different forum, so I'll stop here. Thanks for listening.

On Topic, Now
How to decipher

More on topic, I am finding the description of the deciphering to be leaving something out. It appears that, since the above was posted, he cipher has been changed significantly, and I don't quite understand the mechanism involved in deciphering based on what was written above. Can someone explain the steps involved?

JTony: Here's an explanation of how the Beale cipher worked in the previous puzzle (based on mapmaker's solve).

The message is hidden within the text above the number strings: the numbers tell you where to look under the format X.Y.Z where X = line number, Y = word number, and Z = letter number. Each number string gives you one letter.

There are six lines in the message, with no text on the second line (notice none of the strings start with 2). Now, here's how that would work for the first two letters in the solve.

For example: the first string 4.7.4 tells you to look at the fourth line (the one starting with "intelligence"), then go to the seventh word on that line ("this") and then choose the fourth letter in that word ("S"). That's your first letter.

The second string 1.8.7 tells you to look at the first line (starting with "Hm"), go to the eighth word ("yourself"), and choose the seventh letter ("L"). Continue that for the rest of the strings and you have the answer.

Oh, I get it. I wasn't counting the empty 2nd line as a line, and no matter how I tried it I couldn't get anywhere! Thanks!
