The main thing that's bothering me right now is that there is no evidence at all that Metacortex is working on AI....we all just kind of assumed that, but none of Metacortex's projects seem to have anything to do with it. There'd be no reason to keep that a secret, especially if they had made enough progress to patent anything.....and I really like the theory that the 'Minotaur' is a prototype AI and the 'Labyrinth' is its electronic holding pen.

Thoughts, anyone?

See metacortechs news from 9/29/03. They use a Security AI, and we sorta extrapolated from there.

*cough*

MetaVRX Press Release

Here...

Quote:
The MetaVRX system uses new proprietary MetaCortex software to actually anticipate the players' moves, buffering what it thinks will happen in order to avoid any kind of perceptual lag on the player's behalf. ?This lag has been the primary limitation on the gaming community's willingness to wholly embrace true virtual reality systems in the past, since it has a tendency to make players nauseous, which clearly is not in our best interest as a developer,? stated Walsh. ?However, all indications are that these anomalies have been completely eliminated from the core MetaVRX operating system.?

I'm a developer by trade, and software described in this manner could qualify as A.I.

Bingo I'm in...

What's all this I've been hearing about Labyrinths and Minotaurs?
I can't be bothered to go look for myself.
I'm too tired.

I posted this somewhere else before, but then I just wrote it off as a mistake, but now it's starting to bug me again:

We know that the meet-and-greet was on Oct. 10 @ 8pm. Marcus is going there @ 6:30pm (understandably). Then WHY does the "NEWS" page on metacortex read

Many MetaCortex employees got a chance to meet their new Chief Executive Officer, Steven Walsh, at a gala event at the Intercontinental Hotel last night.

If something on the 10th is referred to as "last night", that makes it having happened on the night of the 9th, yeah?

China is a day ahead of the west coast... so if it happened the evening of the 10th in China (or Australia, you get the idea) then you can talk about it on the morning of the 10th on the west coast of the US.

But - I thought we were all pretty sure that it was taking place in the fictional Redland... so that leaves us in a quandary.

To my eyes, that's either another glitch, or just a typo on the press release... or (becuase we can't ignore the possibility) a pointer to something far more significant. Smile

I can't see how important it really is though... I can't for the life of me make it relate to anything else we've come accross thus far.

The alternative is it's a pre-prepared press statement, which just got uploaded too early... who's fault is that I wonder..?

Hey - I like that line of thinking... who is responsible for uploading the press releases, and who screwed this up... and was there another motive for releasing it early? A way to get a message to someone?

Hmmm....

Fair enough, I guess we should write it off...

Now, what about Avery?

Giskard wrote:

What about the reference to his neighbours? It would be most likely they would be his Swiss neighbours, because if he woudl have disappeared in the USA, people would probably know that he never arrived in Zurich...

This is the way I look at it:
If MLO is now trying to figure out what happened to Avery, then the first logical step for him to take would be to find the last place Avery was seen at. Come on, guys, you know how they do it in mystery novels - the question is "who saw him last?"... He knows that Avery was supposed to go to the airport. He found that at least his luggage made it there (at this point, I'm leaning towards "Avery never made to Zurich; but it doesn't even matter - he could just be trying to find out who had contact with him last in the US).

The next step is to find all the people that interacted with him before (and they always ask "did he seem nervous? did you notice anything unusual?") the "last contact". So he probably at least attempted to ask Metacortex employees etc. (bearing in mind that he should not sound suspiciously interested). What is the next logical place to look for witnesses? I think the answer is "where he lives". So he went around asking Avery's neighbors, and they told him "yeah, you know, it was really loud at his place that night." But why "2nd event"?

Instead of doing a late edit, I'll just reply to myself. Maybe the neighbors told Marucs that they didn't hear anything special the night before Avery was leaving, but they remembered that there was "excessive noise" on some other night. Marcus then estimates the date to be "the night before the 2nd event".

I looked up the second plague in Beth's archive (frogs) and it happened on Sept. 19, 2003. So that pretty much trashes my theory, unless the 2nd event was not from Beth's archive, or Avery came back to the US without anybody knowing about it, or he wasn't there making the "noise".

If I'm not mistaken, the update was actually made sometime in the early hours of 10-11... like around 2 or 3am.. (i was in IRC when it happened)

So, someone just screwed up and put the retro date...

At least, thats what i THINK happened.
