going off topic for a sec...

i'm looking to make a "bioshock mix" playlist on my ipod of music that would fit the idea of Rapture (mid to late 50's, slow and jazzy music).

so far i got:

Beyond The Sea by Bobby Darrin
Papa Loves Mambo by Perry Como
Sea of Love by Phil Phillips
Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny

any other suggestions? message me here or send me a message on XBL, my tag is in my sig, Shepherd Grey.

quote

just remembered something regarding meltzers letter to Celeste at the end he quotes Friedrich Nietzsche with the quote "when you stare into the face of the abyss the abyss stares back at you" it probably means nothing but it might be slightly useful..

Don't forget that the third fake name company is called Scarlet Sovereign.

Scarlet is obviously a shade of red, and Sovereign has the following dictionary entery:

sov⋅er⋅eign
/ˈsɒvrɪn, ˈsɒvərɪn, ˈsʌv-/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [sov-rin, sov-er-in, suhv-] Show IPA
–noun
1. a monarch; a king, queen, or other supreme ruler.

Also, Brand New's "Play Crack The Sky" always reminds me of BS. Not sure why.

A couple quick responses to earlier mentions. Carroll Gardens has nothing to do with Lewis Carroll, at least not historically. It's named after a soldier from the Revolutionary War who signed the Declaration of Independence. Of course, that doesn't rule out a play on names for the sheer fun of it.

Also, the modifications done to the torch included turning the thing into a lighthouse. It was used as such from 1886 to 1905 or thereabouts. There was an electrical plant on the island to support this, and the light could be seen up to 24 miles away. While the light was decomissioned to prevent further damage to the structure, it should have remained possible to bring an independent light source and "relight" the torch right up until 1986.

So here's a perhaps far fetched theory. Perhaps if somebody relit the statue's torch within view of the submarine, it would surface to check things out. Could red light on the female thing's head produce enough light?

new message from Inman, suggesting that Celeste may not be telling everything, or even the truth.

There's been some notes (See the Monthly Undergrounder) to the effect that Ludwidge has been something of an enabler to other people's theories -- he'll feed the Oakes Society paranoia, he's provided information to bolster Celeste's theories, but, other than saying that he was off to find the road to "real rapture," he's not put forth any theories of his own regarding the Vanishing.

Not *that* far-fetched. Sea-going vessels of the era used specially designed spot-lights for night-time communication, using Morse code. There were even battery-powered hand-held models (Aldis lamps) communication. The idea of someone with a powerful flashlight or an Aldis lamp is a lot less intrusive and requires far less suspension of disbelief than a bathysphere built into Liberty Isle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_lamp

http://www.morsemad.com/lamps.htm

Edit: Red lamps have the least "carry" -- when map-reading at night under tactical situations, a red lamp is used to preserve night-vision and not give away one's position.

Edit 2: Using a portable spotlight from the Crown or from the Torch directionally would make a lot more sense than simply lighting the whole Torch and announcing yourself to the whole of the NYC metropolitan area.

That said, an infra-red light source (in its infancy in 1945 and just starting to some into its own in the sixties with the military) would be perfect -- invisible to all save those equipped to spot it.

NEW BOOK

there is a new book on the endtable to the right, a cryptology book from O.O.L., that has the same symbols from the lunchbox.

i don't really have the time to translate, anyone care to take the task?

EDIT: about the Statue of Liberty idea...

what if Mark finds one of Fontaine's old surface contacts for the smuggling ring? and they just so happened to be operating using the SoL as a marker?

Could be... Liberty Island is a former fort in the northern part of Upper New York Bay, below Jersey City and above Bayonne, guarding the approaches to New York harbor, meaning its well away from open water. It could be a decent night navigational point for a small boat running without lights, although, looking at the limited time-lines I can find, it is in a place I'd not want to be running without lights, esp. in a small boat -- a couple major shipping accidents.

A bit of a view of the Statue of Liberty. The Torch has potential... having been closed, the access ladder to the arm is used only for maintenance, meaning, if you could past whatever security is on the island and get into the fort and up the statue, you'd have free run of the place...likewise, with a little luck, you could commit trespass there without too much risk during the day, theoretically.

Well, the anagram of the recurring letters is "Andrew Ryan"

Looking at the bits he's translated (lunchbox? the book trim?), it would *seem* that there is multiple layers -- the cypher needs to be anagrammed after its initially translated, mayhap?

Edit: I really need some other hobby... I think I have some mistakes, but using Aluminus' excellent visual reference and some paper...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"yawnnotdarerandwandernary" is across the top...

yawn not darer and wander nary

"bewarnedandreadydawns" down the right side

be warned and ready dawns

"raynearswillmywanderrnay"

ray nears will my wander rnay

"readnowandbewary" down the left hand side

read now and be wary.

Too tired try and eliminate all the "andrew ryan"s from the message.

On the surface, the border of the book contains a warning to pay attention "yawn not, darer, and be wary"

The middle two sentences (right side and bottom) would suggest something happening at dawn "be warned and ready dawns ray nears will my wander rnay?"

the last is another warning: "read now and be wary"

Begining at the top and moving clockwise
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Yawn not darer and wander nary
be warned and ready. dawns
ray nears. will my wanderr nay
read now and be wary?

It doesn't make sense at face value. I don't think I made a mistake, but it doesn't fit.
edit: oh, wait, I did make some mistakes. Fixed now.
also, Andrew Ryan appears in anagram form in all lines
