Man, I really do suck with coordinates don't I? I got totally different answers. Never trust my coordinates again please. Anyways, if you go by the top row in the box, and start counting you'll realize that the coordinates that pop up match the numbers on Mark's blue map.

Edit: Beat me to it Sage.

i beat a lot of things, but cats and women? NEVER!

^^

EDIT: can we get someone to identify in order the letters of the notes on the top row? there may be a message in one of the other rows, or vertically, etc...

hmmm... Andrew Ryan is 10 letters as well... but no piano keys can spell that...

lol Laughing

I already checked. If Robbs got his notes right, then it doesn't spell anything. Here are the notes if you want them anyways.

C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A

G#/Ab, D#/Eb, G, A, C, D, E, C#/Db, F#/Gb, F

D, F, C#/Db, E, G#/Ab, A D#/Eb, G, C, F#/Gb

ETA: The only letter missing from those notes is B, which was very important in the hunt for the Snark (every character's name started with a B). Just something that I noticed.

Observations

The times and suns are in ascending order, both in notes and in color (red being the "lowest" visible wavelength, violent being the "highest" -- any lower than red and you drift into the invisible infrared, any higher and you go into the ultraviolet.

The suns may indicate AM vs. PM, with the 8/8 representing a date... August 8th? A deadline?

8 is also the spot on the Bellman's map that seems to correspond to NYC.

The associated coordinates are south of Long Island, almost directly below Jones Beach State Park.

if you're going to read my mind, read all of it, please.

i thought the same thing... but the message refers to the rising of the sun. i think that it refers to the time of sunrise on that given day (aug 8th), and the dark ones only to signify a difference between the two like colors.

Being a lowly noob like i am, i have no idea where to start. I rented the first bioshock game and was hooked, finding the "something in the sea" site was immediately interested. So i will just start spilling what many may know already or something i find to be a lucky find.

About 10 minutes ago i opened the jewelry box and was too puzzled by the musical note stuff, and for whatever reason raptures power-source popped into mind (so shoot me, my mind is always on technology). Upon googleing Hydrothermal vents Atlantic ocean i found this

http://whyfiles.org/shorties/172ocean_floor/

Rapture would need ALOT of power to function and from what ive seen on this site, those vents would do the trick. Also its location seems too perfect, and the name of the location seems to scream rapture at the top of its lungs. Im trying to see if this oceanic site has anything to do with the stuff in the music box but am ending up dead in the water.

If ive done anything wrong in this post, please tell me, im no good at fitting in at new forums i join...

Here's what i think I've found...

a general consensus so far is that a note sequence corresponds to the coordinates from the jewelry box matching the numbers on the bellman's chart...so here's what i've got...

the first note's coordinates ("C") are for sydney australia and since #1 on the chart falls thereabouts the first note, incidentally, is C

the next coordinates ("C sharp") gave me a position near to amsterdam, which i believe matches up with position #2 of the map overlay provided early on in this forum...thus, the second note is C sharp

the third set of coordinates (all my research has been through Google and Google maps which can be somewhat inconclusive at times) ("D") gave three positions on the east coast of the U.S., two in massachusetts (near boston) and one in lower new york...assuming the new york position is number 8, then the eighth note of the sequence is D

so far my alleged sequence is: C, C sharp, _,_,_,_,_,D,_,_

in order to keep this brief i believe the sequence (to my current knowledge) is this: C, C sharp,_,_,_,D sharp,_,D,E,_

E is seattle (#9 on the chart), D sharp is, i think, is #6 on the chart (somwhere in the UK)

all of this need verification

The numbers on the Bellman's map... they are ordered 1-10, in the order, roughly, when the sun-rise would be seen. Australia in on the left hand side of the international date line, so it will be 08/08 there first. As you go west, the number increase, 2 and 3 being roughly on the same line of longitude, then four and five, etc.

That article was written by a David Tenenbaum. Coincidence?! Yeah, pretty much.

Ugh, I've been looking at some other forums and they don't think that the piano notes are another puzzle. They're thinking that it's just that they didn't expect people to be as smart as our brilliant Cheech, and already have the locations on the map. I'm not so sure about that, but maybe today's update will tell us more.

I can try and get to the Santa Monica one if no one else is close enough. Shouldn't be a problem since I'm only an hour or two or so away

You may want to keep your calendar open on that date, just in case. Alas, i am in Rockford, IL, about an hour and a half (traffic depending) west of Chicago.

that's what i had thought, myself. my speculation on this is varied. it could be actual red lights in the sea, a bathysphere shows up (doubtful, but possible), in IRL scavenger hunt, or just someone giving out goodies.

*sigh* I'm too far away from any of the coordinates. The nearest one to me is in New York, but I live in Florida, so no luck there. Sad

They may give you places to be but there are still no specific locations. I wouldnt want to drive all the way out somewhere and have no idea where to be. Shocked

I finally got into the jewelry box by just creating a notation system to keep track of where I'd already clicked, and here's my stream-of-consciousness speculation on what's inside...

1. Given that the second and third rows don't have the musical notes in order from left to right, I'm thinking the correct sequence to read them in (although I don't know what that sequence would indicate) might be indicated by one of THOSE two rows, not the top one.

2. Note that Lutwidge never mentions when he made the recording in the jewelry box. Was it, like everything else, made in September of 1958? Or was it made later... like, for instance, after he learned that Meltzer was on the trail?

4. On the map (if that's the Bellman's Chart he speaks of), do the ten locations on the map match up with any real-world coordinates on a world map? Does the red triangle indicate Rapture, or something else?

I got tired of playing that memorygame every time i wanted to open the box so i made this http://h1.ripway.com/limer/bioshock/jewelrybox/ it is on a free webhost so it might take some time to load, but i think it is worth it.
