BioShock 2 (SPOILER THREAD)
Splitting off into a separate thread for spoilers...

All right, several people in the main SitS thread have requested that we stop posting spoilers about the game in the main thread, so I'm taking the liberty of making a new thread where we can talk about plot elements in the actual game.

So, what did you think, everyone who's played BioShock 2?

Okay, well, let's get the big spoiler out of the way, what happens to Mark and Cindy...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
As revealed in the audio diaries, Mark made it to Rapture, but got captured by Sofia Lamb, the new dictator who filled Andrew Ryan's shoes. She offered him a choice: Either get executed, or join the "Protector Program" and become a Big Daddy. Mark became a Big Daddy, giving up everything to protect Cindy. And we don't learn this until after we've killed what looks like just another Big Daddy protecting just another Little Sister... and find Mark's last audio diary on the Big Daddy's corpse.

it was a pretty good game. however i feel the game lacked a lot of the elements that the first game had. like they didnt use ghosts in this one and they also didnt really go into detail about the big sister which kinda dissappointed me.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
but i like the fact that mark becomes a big daddy. i keep reading how everyone was sad that he became one but i think that too many games always go for the happy endings now and its good to change things up and snap us out of our happy trance.

also i dont think the audio logs were such a key factor in the game as it was in the first. you dont really learn anything about raptures history in the logs but more about the characters your fighting

idk it was an amazing game, but i think they couldve done a little better.

and wtf happened to tenenbaum? she just kinda dissapeared. and they didnt really explain what she was doing back in rapture

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think the reason they leave so much unanswered (Tenenbaum's fate, for instance) is because this time, the writers KNOW there will be another sequel. When the first BioShock came out, they wanted to tie up all their loose ends because they didn't know if the game was going to make enough money for a sequel, but now that they know the sequels will keep raking in the cash, they're leaving more plot threads open to continue in the next game.

Also, I think the reason the Audio logs and ghosts didn't play as big a part was twofold:

1. This time, we already know quite a bit about Rapture's history, so they don't need to fill us in on quite as much.

2. Filling in the gaps in Rapture's history is the multiplayer narrative.

(also, this time there's multiplayer, so they had to save some disc space for that)

I really enjoyed the game,
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
but killing mark not so much. I like how they put us in charge of his fate, but I mean, we spend close to a year following the man and 2K make us the ones to do him in after helping him along and putting our faith in him. I wish there was a way to have him survive in the next Bioshock, that'd be sick.

Did anyone else feel that they wanted to see how mark fared more then Delta?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Tenenbaum went up in the emergency vessle at the end of the game. She was the one inside with Eleanor and based on what you did in the game let her live or die.

Actually, it wasn't Tenenbaum in Sinclair's vessel, it was Lamb.

I am with you though - I was almost more interested in finding the next audio diary from Mark as moving the game forward. Talk about bummed - I still can't believe after building this "attachment" to Mark that we are the ones (through Delta) that would whack him. I speculated at worst that we'd find out that Lamb or a Big Sister had done him in, maybe find his corpse, etc. That would have been enough of a knife in the gullet, but 2K had to throw some salt on the wound as well and let us be the 'bad' guy.

A little more "Cindy-Specific" info would have been nice as well.

I think it would have been nice if the little sister that Mark had would have at least been named Cindy and had blond hair...Of course, None of the little sisters have blond hair so I guess that sorta would have been a big homing beacon.

The things I noticed with the game. It almost wasn't scary enough. In the first game you are completely vulnerable, each splicer you encounter is truly a fight for your life, with delta the splicers become far less a threat therefore I don't think they could do as affective fear sequences. And as far as the mini bosses none was nearly as good as Sander Cohen or the first doctor at giving me the chills.

Oh wow, I knew that, but I guess I got confused. I wonder what happened to Tenenbaum. I'm hoping that in Bs3, if there is one, that Mark is somehow related to Ryan and came back in a vitachamber lol

Well, that's 2K for you. However...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's made pretty clear that Cindy was the Little Sister attached to Mark, so in a way, you can make a happy ending for SitS by fulfilling Mark's quest and rescuing Cindy.

A few months ago, I was speculating that even if Mark did make it to Rapture, he would have a devil of a time actually rescuing Cindy, since he wasn't a fighter and had no idea how to change a Little Sister back into a human anyway. We speculated that the final phase of the ARG would be helping with that final mission.

Well, in a way, we were right. We take up Mark's burden and rescue his daughter.

I think it wasn't really supposed to be as scary as the first game. The first game was a horror game, with our emotional stake in the storyline only becoming clear later on, but I think this game was much more drama than horror. Our personal stake in the storyline is made clear from the start this time, so the horror elements are really more fitting... it was always more psychological horror than blood-and-guts horror, but now it's emotional horror as well. The scary elements are less straightforward because everything about this game is less straightforward.
