I had an engineering major friend of mine take a look at the equations. He says the top one, with the dx.dy.dz such was just random crap. Nothing real.

Please tell him to go back and take calculus again before he starts building bridges. I don't know why the dots are there between the differentials but that equation is just the volume of a cube of side length 2n.

Youtube vid clearly references HL2, it says blackmesa in the video, and the world looks ALOT like HL2. the comment section on youtube goes to whatsinthebox.nl

as for the oceanic airlines bit, Idk. Sounds strange, but could be a lost reference. Which would be very odd, if it really is a lost reference, then the odds of this being a viral is next to 0 unless Valve is working with lost which seems impossible. HL2 is heavily referenced and so it couldn't be a Lost viral, if Lost if heavily referenced then it couldn't be a HL2 viral.

But I doubt it's just a couple of guys, unless they are just putting on an ARG/viral look alike for the fun of it, because that is what this is it also would have cost a fair amount of money.

The mags appear to be fake, probably posted by whoever is instigating this deal. the barcode is probably a hint, as I said before they apparently weren't TAKEN until after they were posted, so someone was messing with the exif data. I'm sure its a bigger clue then what it seems.

A fairly professional video, with a fairly professional site, with a very puzzling equation-picture, along with a strange riddle, and now some interesting mag covers. There is something going on here.

I have to say that NONE of the equations there are bogus, I know math, and unless you have taken calc 3 you wont recognize that it basically spells out a cube of volume 8n^3. middle eq is still a mystery but probably has to do with cubes.

Every medium, as its ancestors

I was wondering if by "medium" in the "Every medium, as its ancestors" line it meant perhaps the web. A possible "ancestor" to the web would be FTP.

There's definitely an FTP server running:
ftp://www.whatsinthebox.nl/

But it wants a username/password. Hopefully this isn't behind the curtain Smile

Interesting but didn't valve already say they had no part in this? I still think its those dutch guys pet project. I believe you are on right path wolverine we need focus on the riddle or math equation. Also as far anyone going to try and decipher could it be in dutch?

Someone at firstshowing.net found a magazine with an ad

definitely related to the site, not sure if it's revealing though. still very interesting....! I still don't know if that video is related to the website, it's still only a one-way connection at this point.

Hi All!

I live in Nijmegen (where this was shot apparantly) and noticed something you should see. There is a physics magazine called leonardo bode, and on the back of some issue's there appear to be a hint to what's in the box!!1!!

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4773/dsc00783f.jpg

What does this mean!!!!

Looking at this more closely (especially since "leonardo bode" doesn't seem to be a real magazine as near as I can tell) I started thinking that one way to cheaply advertise an ARG without actually advertising it would be to print up some fake back covers for a fake magazine, take a picture, and post that picture somewhere Smile

Still, definitely interesting so far.

just wanted to let you know that i noticed this:
at some point in the phone book myth video a familiar symbol shows up.

here's a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sIB2kL-BWc&feature=channel

and the screenshot i took: http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/a6al-2-jpg.html

nothing special, but i don't think it has been posted before...

The symbol showing up in the Mythbuster's video has been found. If you look at my post a few pages back, there's also the same symbol in Timacious' two other youtube videos (Terminator: Sweded, and the Storm Chaser's video). This is kind of important, since it ties all the videos and website together, and shows that Tim Smit and Steven Roeters were planning What's in the Box for a while.

Valve has already said they have nothing to do with it. And there are too many copyright infringements for it to be any sort of official viral. It's not a Lost viral, it's not a Half Life viral, it just references them and borrows a lot of material from them (and from Jurassic Park and Tenacious D as well).

I think at this point we have an idea of what 3 of the 4 equations on the anti.jpg are, and it's mostly like not "random crap".

Although the video may seem too high budget for a few Dutch guys to make on their own, their Storm Chaser's video seems pretty high budget too with the use of equipment and CG. I'd say these guys have a decent amount of resources to work with, and have been planning this thing since 2006-2007.

If we can get away from HL/Lost speculation, and maybe get more info on the magazine bar code and the 4th equation on anti.jpg, we might be on to something.

I have a strong feeling that the Dutch "Kreis" gentleman who posted the images of the magazine on firstshowing.net may have been someone involved with the game. It seems like Leonardo Bode may not even be a real magazine. As far as I can tell, Kreis is a German word/name, but it may also be Dutch as well, I don't know.

Exactly.

Very interesting. This is a big one.

I thought about that quote too and all I could come up with was Gaming(HL2) -> Movie. Which appears unlikely now, which makes me sad.

But it is true that this has been around for a while, what with the site reading copyright 2007, thats almost ancient. Yet we get this magazine picture, which means the creator is keeping up with this. I have a feeling the username might be Kreis

The Kreis guy went to several forums and posted messages of varying hysteria about his find. No one else in the world has heard of this magazine and the image is designed to tantalize rather than inform.

It seems too pat that he "accidentally" cut off the words on the bottom of the top-most image, as well as obscuring the words on the middle part – if it was a legitimate real person taking those pictures, they wouldn't have arranged them so neatly – they would have made sure we could see every square inch of the magazine pages too, since there were obvious clues to be seen underneath.

My bet: "Hire us into the movie industry" meets clever guys making their own ARG.

I didn't see this here yet. From:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/03/18/whats-in-whats-in-the-box/

Quote:

Physicser says:

So, the final equation has to do with hypercubes. The Z_n equation is apparently the "Hypercube point picking to the center" (from Box integral, with Hypercube point picking. Truthfully, I'm not entirely sure what it means, but the feeling I get from the Wolfram pages is that Z_n is the average distance from a point on the hypercube to its center. Not sure how much this actually helps, but it does also link at least one of the equations to the figures at the bottom of the cube, which contains, as MaxS pointed out, a hypercube.

This site also has the EXACT same quote from Kreis:

What does this mean!

That reinforces my belief that Kreis is a plant Smile

Don't really see much else in the discussion that hasn't already been covered in this thread but someone else should probably double-check Smile

I messed with the bar code part of the magazines in MSPaint in hopes someone can try to decipher it. Is there a reader out there that can do it?

How can I attach it?

I just found the last equation, http://mathworld.wolfram.com/BoxIntegral.html

as you said its about hypercube point picking.

Kreis is an obvious plant, watch out of the name Kreis and Leonardo Bore.

Cool that someone finally figured out the 4th equation. So they are:

1. Volume of the cube
2. Magic Cube
3. Prince Rupert's Cube
4. Hypercube point picking

The Kreis dude has to be a plant, which means there's definitely something to the picture/magazines. Maybe the barcode, maybe something else, but I'm not sure what else we could really take away from the pic but the barcode and the Oceanic Airlines logo. This ftp could definitely be something as well.

Anyone know about the ftp I'm getting 404, but I don't have a client.

Also anyone have a steg detector to run on the image?

ftp site

Yes there is a ftp://www.whatsinsidethebox.nl

Tried username Kreis and all the obvious for password...Leonardo Bore..whatsinthebox...box...etc. but the password keeps getting rejected. Is there any solution to the equations from the anti.jpg, maybe that could be it.
