GUYS! It just hit me, this whole thing has a huge resemblance to another thread on the trailhead "PHHInterception."

It began when someone posted a youtube link they'd found.

The video is an interview with a "test subject" who seems to be taking some sort of experimental drug.

Yeah its an RP forum, but then the videos of that PHH guy are also tagged as "ARG", so maybe the RP community of whatever site that was decided to make it into an ARG? Or maybe just a few of them are, but either way it certainly has ARG elements - afterall, ARG are effectively roleplaying, just with an end in sight.

I messaged PHH on youtube with a few questions, got a response today:

Actually, sec-reg was the site of a previous ARG called Bookerville, but since then they've revamped it to something else. Heh. Also, I believe the PM of that ARG said he'd be making a new ARG later, since Bookerville pretty much dissolved at one point. But Bookerville had a small following, and I don't think either redct or coffeegirl, the main receivers of the trailhead, played it (I did, and I did not recieve a trailhead, so I assume that at most, sec-reg's author is simply helping, or has no stake at all in the game).
