I'd almost suggest if we go with a public version of the public, it should be different. I honestly believe the book that goes to Tyler should be unique and special for their family, not the same thing that everyone else gets.

In design, i 100% agree! Unique, special, Tyler's. but the selfish side of me hopes i can also get copies of pictures & memories - even if not in the book form.

You both are really right... The book for Tyler has to be unique, his book. But perhaps we could use the materials and resources we'll collect for the book somewhere online?
What about online Daves memorial - open 24/7, where visitors can read tributs and memories about him. Perhaps can somebody reconstruct the ingame pages he made. Like a museum. Everlasting.

I'd be glad to help here - in any way, perhaps with multilingual support or just where I'm needed.

I'm very thankful to Dave for his great books, that opened my mind. And I want to do something for him.

My dear brother

I wanted to take a moment and tell you all how incredibly touched I am to read all of the wonderful and amazing things you've said about my dear brother, Dave. It is overwhelming to know that he touched so many people through his work. He was a great man to have as a brother. But he was very private and actually did not readily share details of his work with us. Try as we might to find out what he was doing, it was a bit like pulling teeth. He seemed to want to keep his work his own private alternate reality. So I'm actually a bit jealous of you all because you knew a side of Dave I never got to know. Thank you for sharing a bit of that with me through your posts.

His smile and laughter lives on through Tyler...and I am so thankful to him for leaving behind that gift. Marianne is an angel and I'm also thankful to have her in my life now, too. My own son, Cole, who turns 11 tomorrow, battled leukemia when he was 3. Thankfully, he beat the disease and is thriving. Dave loved Cole and I know his battle was partly in honor of Cole and his triumph. So while he couldn't beat the disease, I still think of him as triumphant and brave...just like my little guy.

I look forward to meeting some of you in the next few days. And thank you again for caring so much about Dave.

Michelle

Dave
in memory

I was very shocked and saddend to hear of Daves death.
He was a great man and very talented.
He inspired me to become a Change Agent
He made me smarter because of what he brought to the table
I loved working with him and creating art for CTW.
I was glad to have met him.
We will never see another like him.
He has passed to a new and better reality that we can ever imagine and we will see him again one day and play even better ARGs.
God bless David and God bless Marianne and Tyler.
WE WILL MISS YOU DAVID!!!!!! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

I'm still in shock about this, I can't believe that Dave won't be around anymore. He will be missed.

Like I said, I'm going down to the viewing on Sunday, I'll print out this thread and the thread about the cranes so that Dave's family will have a hard copy of it. If anyone else wants to post, I'll print this off around 11:00 Sunday morning EST.

I had a lovely little dream last night about Dave and PashaP. (PashaP was a player of ringorang that many of us knew. He passed away last night due to lung cancer). Well, Dave and Pasha were dancing and smiling and very happy. After a bit, they turned and waved to me. They had huge, happy smiles on their faces. And I woke up.

Part of me thinks this was just my brain trying to cheer me up, but the other part hopes that Dave and Pasha were trying to send me a lovely little goodbye message. Smile

It is a pleasure for all of us to be able to remember Dave and his commitment to fostering a thriving community of ARGers through his vision and creativity.

I think each of us will remember Dave for something different. Some, like me, will remember him as a founding father of a fiction genre that, when at it's best, truly fosters community spirit.

Some will remember him for his games, those lucky souls who have had an opportunity to see inside a part of Dave's mind that few have been able to touch.

Others will remember him as a friend; someone to share a kind handshake with, someone who could make them laugh, and someone who could be there whenever they needed his presence.

And you, his family, will remember him as a man who cared for his family more than anything else in the world.

I'd like to think that he is in heaven, right now, with God, crafting the perfect ARG, and will be ready to show it to us when we get there, too. Smile

May you find solace in these thoughts, and may the peace of God be with you as you work through this time of trial and difficulty.

Indeed, that was basically what I was thinking. The content - images, anecdotes - could be the basis for two similar works. I think Tyler's copy should be addressed specifically to him, and I think the contributors can easily put in that special part for his own particular volume.

It may sound goofy, but in the book Dune the Fremen had a tradition of testimony at the funeral of the members of their tribes. They would begin by declaring that they were a friend of the deceased. Even small contributions to the lives of the other tribe members were testified as important, because every member understood that all others played a part in making up the community.

I was a friend of Dave. I never met him, never got to play any of his games, but when I hear the players' stories and see the legacy of those works it excites me and provides me hope that some day I will be able to participate in something so compelling. The bond he created with this community is so strong that it has shown me just how good this community can be.

rose gave me the sad news today. man, this sucks.

Dave helped us organize/design the Fest Quest in NYC in '05. He had just lost a very close family member and was obviously hurting, but he came through and kept his commitment, because the community meant that much to him. That was when I became a lifelong Dave Szulborski fan.

His contributions to and influence on the ARG genre are vast and cannot be overstated. Not to mention, he was a really, really nice guy.

Godspeed, Dave.

That family member was our oldest brother, Rick, who also passed away at the age of 51. That was a hard time for all of us, followed by our mother's passing last year. I know that Dave is with them now and was so happy to see them waiting. He really missed them both.

Thanks again for being a lifelong Dave Szulborski fan!

It is very hard to see someone who was regarded as a pioneer in this business pass away.

I never knew him personally...but when a man who was as brilliant as he was becomes a legend in this new form of media just by his brains...you got to give him props.

My condolences to his family and to all of you who knew him better and who made a crane...bless you all.

eta: After watching the ARG Speech of Dave's and looking at his credits...he worked on my favorite ARG that I ever played...the Art of The Heist. I was the reporter in the NYC Audi Party event.

Great game.

konashark also sends his condolences.
While he never actively played any of Dave's ARGs with me, he lived in Aglaura & watched me in Urban Hunt; then happily presented me with the box from Monster Hunter Club when it showed up on our doorstep (well trained to identify anything addressed to 'konamouse' as being ARG).
Shark also traveled with me to ARGFest Orlando where we met Dave in person for the first time, and he took us all to dinner when Dave visited Las Vegas.

Shark suggests that the Dave story I will put together for the memory book should be my multiple personality 'disorder' during CTW when I was playing 'myself' (konamouse aka Heather), a character ('Angie") and then Dave had to communicate with my real self about the character. And that both my game playing persona "Heather" and my ingame character "Angie" were both flirting with the character Bruce Abbott. But poor Dave started getting confused in his emails (but never revealed anything about the story/game to the wrong person).

We had originally planned to release the videos from last year's ARGFest over the course of the next couple of months, but upon request and because we think it's a beautiful way to honor his memory, we put up the video of Dave's keynote speech on argfestocon.com

You can view it here, where it's also available to download in .avi form.
