Well, I didn't make it to the viewing. Sad Having two kids (one an infant) required a little more planning than I thought it would. By the time we left, our GPS told us we would arrive 15 minutes after 8. Bummer.

EDIT: Not going to the funeral after all. Daughter is really sick, night tremors and all that. Sad Please pass along my condolences. I wish I could be there.

Touched

I was so touched to see so many of you there tonight at Dave's viewing. It meant alot to us to hear how he has touched your lives and how much you cared for him. Tonight was hard and sad but beautiful in a way, too. The love that Dave inspired was all around us. I didn't think I'd be OK there tonight, but I was because I felt that love. So, again, thank you. I will see some of you tomorrow.

tHE BOOK FOR DAVES SON

I'd almost suggest if we go with a public version of the public, it should be different. I honestly believe the book that goes to Tyler should be unique and special for their family, not the same thing that everyone else gets.

Indeed, that was basically what I was thinking. The content - images, anecdotes - could be the basis for two similar works. I think Tyler's copy should be addressed specifically to him, and I think the contributors can easily put in that special part for his own particular volume.

It may sound goofy, but in the book Dune the Fremen had a tradition of testimony at the funeral of the members of their tribes. They would begin by declaring that they were a friend of the deceased. Even small contributions to the lives of the other tribe members were testified as important, because every member understood that all others played a part in making up the community.

I was a friend of Dave. I never met him, never got to play any of his games, but when I hear the players' stories and see the legacy of those works it excites me and provides me hope that some day I will be able to participate in something so compelling. The bond he created with this community is so strong that it has shown me just how good this community can be.

I was talking to Sin..Vrall and Spaceboy earlier and I said "too bad we cant do puzzles to honor his dad for the book, Sin said why cant we. Spaceboy concurred reminind me that there was a book being made. so while you relate stories that you want in the book perhaps we can all contribute puzzles in Daves honor

The First Chasing the Wish Mask
my inspiration

I had started playing PUSH Nevada and was magically transported to another plane of thought and existance. Thru the boards I found Unfiction and Chasing the Wish.
David had just been putting out trailers and in the early days of the pregame he put out and invitation for people to work on the game.
I am an artist, writer and now puzzler....
So I emailed and said I wanted to participate not knowing what a life changing experience it was going to be.
I had a dream during this period that I had diamonds all over my face and i was planning on making a mask because I had a plaster cast of my face.
I had a conversation where I told David about it and it inspired him for me to make a fairly mask. He sent me a pic of the Queen of Fairies.
He made me overcome an artist block. He was the King of Games and of Change Agents.
Here is a pic of the Mask I made for David
I would love to see the ones made for Catching the Wish

The Six Aspects

Sunny: (m)ask and ye shall receive.

Closer pictures here.

I can't be in PA today, so maybe I should say a few words... Dave contacted me to do the masks for CTW2, not knowing anything about me as an artist beyond the little things I had done for the Alias ARG. I had heard of Dave Szulborski. He was the mind behind Urban Hunt, my first real introduction to the world of ARGs. I was getting email from a superstar.

And yet, for a founding father of the genre, Dave was always so laid back, so confident and easygoing. I was a completely unknown artistic value, but Dave had faith that I could do this phenomenal, huge, pivotal project, even though this would be the first thing I'd sculpted that was bigger than a quarter.

I could have never gotten as far as I have as an sculptor if it weren't for Dave. He was a joy to work with, and a true artist.

More here.

I also cannot be today there, since I'm in Germany. But I will be there. I will be mentally there and I will pray for Dave, for his family and for the dreams he made true for us all.

So if there is a list of visitors or something, please write "kosmopol" down there. Because my thoughts are with Dave.

Well these are FANTASTIC!!! You really took them to the next level. They are so earthy and elemental (like earth wind rain) I loved the way you mixed media and would like to talk with you sometime on your process.
Definetly works of art!!!! If you decide to continue along this vien I am sure you will continue to achieve even more!!!

I had a lovely little dream last night about Dave and PashaP. (PashaP was a player of ringorang that many of us knew. He passed away last night due to lung cancer). Well, Dave and Pasha were dancing and smiling and very happy. After a bit, they turned and waved to me. They had huge, happy smiles on their faces. And I woke up.

Part of me thinks this was just my brain trying to cheer me up, but the other part hopes that Dave and Pasha were trying to send me a lovely little goodbye message. Smile

Thank you for sharing that dream Varin. That is a lovely dream and I'm jealous you had it. I would like to see those wonderful men in my dreams.

I am also unable to be there, as much as my heart wishes I could. But I can share some words with the rest who are unable as well.

Dave has been a big part of my life since he first tapped me to be a writer for CTW2. Like Toe, I was a total unknown. I didn't have a ton of confidence in my writing ability, but he gave me that. I made a puzzle! (My sad little WoW puzzle :p ) Heck, I even voice acted for him, something shy little me would never have considered before. I to this day consider the Douglas' journals to be my best work. He was my inspiration. I will never forget the impact he's had on my life. Even though I was constantly telling him I'd work for him for free, he gave me my first paid writing gig with Unnatural Selection. I loved working for him and I loved working with the rest of the team. I got to learn about the genre I love from the man who literally wrote the book on it, and for that I am forever grateful. Everything I do from this point forward in ARGs or writing I will owe to his influence.

Love ya Dave. Thanks for everything.

I thought you would like to know a little about the visitation and funeral for Dave.

Last night at the visitation, the room was filled with artifacts from Dave's life, including pictures of him, newspaper articles about Chasing the Wish, a copy of his book, the masks of Knowledge and of Man, baskets of cranes, and Dave's music playing. One particularly poignant lyric sung by Dave said, "I know I can't be there with you, but you are here with me."

There was also a string of cranes laid to rest with him, and we wrote messages on a few more for ourselves and for those who asked us to and placed them with him. There were even cranes worked into the casket flower spray!

Today at the funeral during the remembrances, Dave's brother in law stood up and read different parts of this thread to the people in church, and some of the names of the people who had posted, so that Dave's local friends and family would know about his "cyber-family." Varin also stood and explained about the significance of the cranes and how they came from around the world.

Marianne is keeping many of the cranes for Tyler, but she asked those attending the visitation and funeral to take one home with them.

It was a lovely sendoff for an amazing man. God speed, Dave.

The funeral today and the viewing last night were absolutely beautiful. Dave was surrounded by all of his creative works, from music to games. I thought you all should know that the picture from ARG Fest NYC was up next to all of his news write-ups, so the grand picture of the greater ARG community together with Dave was really touching.

The church was very full today for the proceedings, and the speeches given by Dave's family and Varin were very touching. It truly was a fine send off to a man who impacted countless lives. I miss him, but he'll never leave us as long as we have his work and the memories of him.

I just came upon this thread. I am saddened to hear of his loss. I never had the opportunity to interact with him but I know he was and is well-loved for his personality and his contributions to ARGs.

Sleep Well, Dave.

Oh man, I just heard Sad

My sincerest condolences to the family and to everyone the man has touched. The world just grew a little colder from this loss.

Dave's games were always my favorite, I'd always jump at the chance to join if I found out he was behind one. I know I haven't been around the forums lately, but whenever I came back on I always looked to see what news I could find of him. And now this. Sad

I still have the Mask of Technology and the other various swag I recieved from his games, but now, they'll take a new place in my heart.

I am truely sorry for this loss. If there's anything I can do to help his memory to live on, one just has to ask.

Rest well Dave. Rest well.
