Shutting down the Adventurer's Club at Disney World http://www.boingboing.net/2008/06/29/petition-to-save-dis.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventurers_Club
Quote:
On June 27th, 2008 The Orlando Sentinel announced the Adventurer's Club (along with all other clubs on Pleasure Island) would be closing forever on September 27th 2008. An online petition to save the club was created by members the DIS boards at Petition Online in hopes that Disney would consider moving the club or keeping it as part of the new Pleasure Island format.
They're shutting down a part of ARGFest history!

Oh what memories of that night.
Like Martavius solving Jamesi's golden ticket vig code just by looking at it.

I think being stuck in a gated attraction of primarily 'get drunk dance clubs' didn't do it any favors. If they took away the entry fees and just merged it with the West End the whole of Pleasure Island would be better off. I think they could dispose with most of the street entertainment they try to put on, and as I understand it the serving of drinks on the 'streets' of PI would have to stop if it was ungated - which would probably help too. The fact is that the jazz club they have there, the conversational club that the Adventurer's Club is, and the Boardwalk's Atlantic Dance Hall all would do better in a setting alongside the West End. One of the things I liked was that despite the fact that alcohol was served, the Adventurer's Club was never really a 'get drunk' place, and I saw more conversation amongst strangers there than anywhere. If you never did the 'sing along' in the Library, you missed out.
Kungaloosh!

Somewhere I read a rumor that Disney is going to build a new, grownup theme park and that the Adventurer's Club will be built into it. Certainly sounds intriguing.
And, hi Churchy!

Another highlight of the Orlando ARGFest. Sigh.

Yeah, I read the same thing, it's going to become the entrance to this 'secret plan' that hasn't been announced yet, but is basically a "do a ton of kick-ass things" theme-park. Things like ziplining over alligators and feeding hippopotamuses and stuff. So maybe, they'll remake the whole club there, so it wouldn't just be the gateway, but an attraction in its own right.
Also - I went to Disney three years ago, and had no idea this was here. I am so disappointed.

I was going to go see the Adventurer's Club early in 2009 during my reward travels after graduation.
Now I will never get to go!

For your curiosity and amusement, Peter David writes about how he proposed at Disney's Adventurer's Club:

For the record, the club was indeed shut down at the end of September. I was just pointed to this performance from the final night. I'm sure there are vids of other performers from that night as well, if you want to have a look.
(on another note, has the youtube tag stopped working with the recent forum update?)

Gah! This was the best thing on Pleasure Island! How can they do that? Where will our intrepid adventurers go to get drunk and embarass park visitors?

Why is it always necessary to redo or rebuild the classics. We always had a great time at the Adventurers Club on our Disney Vacation...so I guess it will be different and almost certainly more expensive--that's what happened with Hotels Disney World.
