XenoVaradox
Alternate Reality War Game?

A comment on a recent ARGNet article tipped me off to a recent game launch at http://www.xenovaradox.com

It appears the trailhead was posted on reddit a few days back
http://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/8bk3q/xenovaradox_wtf_anyone_know_anything_about_these/?sort=new

The website describes itself as an "Alternate Reality War Game", whatever that may be.

There also appears to be a campaign to stop XenoVaradox at http://www.stopxenovaradox.info/

This seems a bit fishy to me.

On the http://www.xenovaradox.com homepage there's a support us section which is asking for Paypal donations?

As far as I'm aware... ARG's never ask for money 0_o

They're also asking for a $50 donation to help them review your application for a 'career' with them, faster.

This definitely feels dodgy to me unless I am missing something?

ETA: The http://www.stopxenovaradox.info site is also asking for donations...

Just because ARGs haven't asked for money before doesn't mean they can't. Having said that, it is a bit odd to see it featured so prominently on both sites.

I don't know why, but I got a bit of a Steorn-ish vibe from the websites.

So what happens when you "apply" for a position?

Now here's somethin' bizzaro: Looks like Jobs for programmers has a listing for Xeno.

What the heck is "Tactical Hermeneutics"? I wonder if it tastes good on toast? Laughing

Notgordian... Dunno how sort of 'in depth' with ARGs you are but it's actually one of the (Unwritten maybe?) Cardinal sins of ARGing - You should never ask your players for cash.

I guess it's one way around your ARG amounting to an advert for something else...

Actually, the pay-to-play model has been tried VERY early on with EA's Majestic and more recently Studio Cypher's series of games. However, there's a lot of trust implicit in engaging in a transaction before the game has launched full swing, so it doesn't happen very often (and may be paired with tiered participation to allow people to try before they buy).

Oh no I do understand that concept, but... Is there anywhere [OOG] where this 'game' has been discussed and what the payment methods would/could be for?

I don't mean to be sounding disrespectful toward this ARG. It will PROBABLY turn out awesomely, but when I see an ARG which seems to only want money with no actual explaination for [what's being paid for] so to speak I get a little suspicious.

That is what concerns me as well, Leyton. The problem I see is that there is no blatant "ARG"-ness to it. It just seems like a random thing someone made that isn't connected to anything else.

Until more info can be ascertained about the purpose of these sites, I think we should treat this as literally "Not a Game." If this is a game, the creators will let us know. Wink

Looks like someone is at least claiming that it's a game--and not a new one, at that:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alternative_reality_games

As for what I personally would be willing to pay for, $20 (or more) seems like a pretty steep cost of entry with no guarantee of payoff in terms of actual play. I could see X-Men Origins: Wolverine multiple times in the theatre for that kind of cash! Or, as the Xenovaradox site points out, I could have almost a week's worth of fast food lunches... Wink

Apparently, the associated URL is http://operationaladdin.info/

Heh, that's the first time I've ever been called a douchebag. Laughing Shocked

Christy Dena posted the following tweet earlier today:

"The XenoVaradox (ARG) has visited my website and left this URL: http://lightisautomatic.info/"

Link to the comment here as the name Sarah Murphy might be significant to anyone playing.

Okay so wait... We have 2 sites pointing to NO gameplay but a lot of gamePAY.

A site which requests username/password but no gameplay prior to finding site to actually be able to enter said username/password.

And a site which is typically [down] at the moment with a "This Web site coming soon" attached to it?

I'm passing on this one, me thinks...

WTF? "This Web site coming soon"!!!

You mean there weren't any active links or other messages or anything?

Sounds like a rip-off, if you ask me...
