After reading through everything I would just like to throw out a shout-out to Spacebass, who handled the situation in the chat (at least from reading it) very professionally. Good on ya!

Someone put a lot of work and time into creating this. Granted, he said that he was always one step ahead (which would give me the impression that this was a day-by-day thing), it still seems like a lot to do for revenge. Why not just sue the guy... seems much easier.

Then again, I've always thought about creating a small game just to ask a girl out before, so I guess nothing is out of the question. But still... something is rubbing me weird about how this all went down.

Even though there are answers, the pieces just don't seem to fit. But I guess when it comes to motive, it doesn't need to. Ah, well.

That pretty much sums up the entire game in a single sentence.

I always like to say that there's no 'rules' in ARGs, but then in situations like these, it's easy to come up with a guideline or two, anyway.

In this case, I sort of want to say, 'what, you wanted the players to be complicit in committing several crimes with you, Ron? You wanted them to be villains, instead of heroes?'

Like, I get the potential twistiness of such a plot-line, but ultimately, you're asking the players to be dicks. It just isn't a strong story choice, is what I am saying.

This.

I have to admit, the general idea really intrigues me. Telling a metafictional story about a story which has some grounding in the real world strikes me as innovative (dare I say?) genius, but the way this "PM" went about doing it was disappointing and wrong. There are some limits and unwritten rules, and this "game" seems to have shattered them in some very uncool ways.

Still, I have to say, if someone can somehow pull of something similar to this someday (wow, unintentional alliteration), and do so in a legal and non-malicious manner, I will be impressed. For now though, I'm simultaneously impressed and troubled.

I never meant to imply that posting here was the main issue, or even a huge issue with this specifically. it was more a blanket statement response to a couple posts in this thread - Such as Kosmopol saying he'd thought about how to break the rule himself.
Sorry if that wasn't conveyed properly, I just had no thoughts on the other issues at that moment.

Apologies, I misinterpreted.

You know, I followed along for a while, but then I got turned off because people were reluctant to post important information on UF because they thought it would be used against them by game characters. That right there seemed totally counterproductive for a game like this, to wit: only a few people were in IM or email contact with the game characters, and the rest of the players were following along vicariously. To make the atmosphere so hostile to sharing information that the majority who were not spokespeople or had no desire to be interactors were left in the cold causes a self-limiting game.

And to repeatedly cry "Wolf!" - "My name is Eric and I'm a rogue PM," "We're a group of students making a collaborative game with our audience," "My name is Ron and I stole the idea of this game from someone who owed me money," etc. is just going to end up frustrating and turning even the most devoted players off, not only from this game, but from other ARGs in general. Which is a shame. There are games out there that do not trample roughshod over their audiences but take them along for an enjoyable journey.

I so agree. I tried unsuccessfully a few times to get "ingame". The whole atmosphere wasnt helpful to that. I had just came back from a 4 year absence of ARG's, and it kind of put me off, as i remembered unfiction as a warm fuzzy, albeit crazy place.I am glad I stuck through it thought.

In response to some items not posted, that was me - and I'll take responsibility. There was only one email I received that I debated on posting. The reasoning behind it, was because it directly referenced the gamejacking and a few other problems. There didn't seem (at the time) to be anything directly relevant to the game. I did consult with one of the other players and after talking it over with him, I decided to post it. However, by that time - someone else had already received an email stating that I had information to share. The reason I was reluctant at first was frankly - I didn't want to encourage any of the gamejackers. Right/wrong/or indifferent - that was the reason. This particular ARG screwed with all of us - we had no idea who to trust, what to believe, or anything - but I think everyone has seen that by now, lol.

So there was no malicious intent on my part, nor was I trying to hoard information - I was simply trying to help. If it put anyone, off, I'm terribly sorry - as that certainly wasn't the intent. Please don't let it leave a bad taste in your mouth - know that I was trying to avoid including more problems.

On another subject, I attempted to email one of the IG email address's to see if "Ron D" would be willing to answer some of our questions, and bring something of a closure to this. I asked him to reply in email to me, rather than post on the forums. I'll post it here if I get any sort of a response.

Sorry for the double-post, but I wanted to be sure this would be seen. Classical just received a coded message from BrianBricker - we haven't gotten all the way through it yet, but it would appear "Ron" forced Bricker to have the conversation with us the other night in the forums, asking it to be shutdown...

Yes it is - Classical received a "coded" message from Bricker. Basically saying that he was under duress from this Ron character - and that not to contact him at home/work -and he'd be in touch with us.

No thanks. I'm really not keen on being tricked into playing a game.

That's a reasonable response.

I think you will all have to find someplace else to play the game. This thread, not the place{imnsho}...
