PL, PauL is an impressive example that all followers of Pastor Ludd should aim to emulate; the mask and poses set a high standard. I was so taken by the photos of him that when I started reading thought it said Hombre de Cuervo. Laughing

Lysithea, you might want to send that to Pastor Ludd to show him how the robots are taking over. I'm planning to post something similar in the youtube comments.

For anyone who's only following the game via this thread- Carol Coldoil held his press conference Tuesday evening. In addition to repealing his nasty new TOS, he announced that RFF would be hosting a robot speed dating session in Portland, OR next month. It'll be July 17th, if for some reason any of you happen to be 'round there 'round then. Wink

Coldoil also took questions from the audience. Viewers pressed him on a number of topics, from the details of the 36 charcteristics to the 'deactivation' of lugnut (his former administrator). The latter topic really pushed his buttons, and eventually led him to cut the Q&A short. Though the video feed was cut, the audio remained just long enough for us to hear an obviously upset Coldoil answer his phone and have a cryptic discussion with some unknown collaborator.

I was reading Rowan's wonderful guide and I realised that the voltmeter puzzle needed some attention.

Voltmeter puzzle solve (the non-brute force method):

I'm not sure what level to try and explain this at. I apologise if it is either too technical or too simplistic (or both!)

The starting point:
Looking at the picture it can be seen that there is a sinusoidal magnetic field which is generating an induced voltage in a pair of voltmeters.

Putting these terms into google yields a number of useful sites about Faraday's Law, including this gem:

Antenna theory

The question:
What is the combined reading of the Voltmeters?

The relevant formula:
V(rms) = 2*Pi*N*A*f*B(rms)*cos(theta)

Where:
V(rms) = the Root Mean Square value of the voltage (Voltmeters display an RMS value)
Pi = 3.14159.....
N = number of loops
A = area
f = frequency
B(rms) = the Root Mean Square value of the magnetic field
cos(theta) = the angle to the magnetic field

In this example:
The semi-circle on the left hand side is half of a loop.
N = 0.5

The radius of the circle is 0.1m
A = Pi * radius^2
A = Pi * 0.1 * 0.1 m^2

The frequency is given (There is a slight problem with the units. Either the given frequency is in Hertz or the answer is in kiloVolts)
f = 1000 Hz

To obtain an RMS value of a sine wave, divide the given magnitude by the square root of 2.
B(rms) = 100 / (2^0.5)

Assuming right angles,
cos(theta) = 1

Both voltmeters are connected to the same points, so they will display the same voltage.

Answer = Voltmeter1 + Voltmeter2
= 2*V(rms)
= 2*2*Pi*N*A*f*B(rms)*cos(theta)
= 2*2*Pi*0.5*0.1*0.1*Pi*1000*100/(2^0.5)*1
=13957.728...
=13958 Volts (as a whole number)
