 ARGs outside of the city...

Hey

Noob here, I've been "in on" (lurked) MANY args in the past and I'm soon going to be having a lot of time on my hands (hopefully), and I've a very good motive/reason to plan a small scenic-environment based ARG - however my main issue is that I live in a rural village in the UK.

That's not such a problem when it comes to sending out letters, e-mails and doing web stuff, but if I was to do deaddrops or something then it might be the case that there's nobody who would be around to pick up messages/letters etc. Is there any point me planning an ARG - would there actually be anybody around to pick up those deaddrops/letters? Or possibly a way around this?

Cheers

D

Simple answer: "Geocaching"

A good number of Geocaches are in non-urban areas. The only contingency you will want to plan on is that it may take some time for someone to access the dead-drop / letter.

You don't need to have deaddrops or live events in order to have an ARG. But if you want them or the story needs them, there are ways around it.

For deaddrops, contact someone in the city (or cities) where you want the deaddrop and have them place it for you. If you don't know anyone, you might be able to find a local geocaching group who could help you out - not only are they familiar with the idea of deaddrops, but some of them are quite good at documenting and, even, creating puzzles to get to the cache.

Live events could be designed in a way that they're built by the players - it's a bit difficult to balance the "reward" in this sort of situation, but it is doable.

The important thing is that you should design to your strengths and not to your weaknesses. You'll hit fewer obstacles that way. But, when you do hit one, don't think about what you can't do. Think about what you want to do and then figure out a couple possible ways to do it - you'll be surprised at some of the ideas you come up with.

If you plan the drop to be picked up on the weekend, there's a fair chance that someone might be able to come pick it up from your rural village. If not someone playing, then sometimes players will contact the community at large to see if anyone can pick it up.

(I only say this because the UK is a much smaller place than the US Razz)
