[TRAILHEAD?] ARPG
Anything here?

Don't know whether anyone else noticed the strange tweets tagged with #argfest and #pretendargfest this weekend, from some guy named Arkhamdoc. On Saturday:

Arkhamdoc wrote:
My distinguished colleagues at American Research Psychology, Gotham: I would like to ask you a question.
It's regardng a very important case, and I feel very strongly about it.
I know that some of you share my opinions regarding the rehubilitation of so-called "psychopaths."
Vut asyou know, the public have a powerful set of prejudices in this regarde, and the politicans arn't helping.
And our budget at the hospital is a joke.
Perhps if some of you would speak out in support of our efforts, we might turn the tidde.
Any thing you could do would be most appreciated.

On Sunday:

Arkhamdoc wrote:
Very sorry about that. Thought you were a professional organization.

Given the references to Arkham and Gotham, I'm assuming this is an attempt at a rabbit hole, using the similarity between ARG and ARPG as the excuse for the mis-tagging. (The typos -- uveead -- do not appear to spell out anything interesting.)

According to the Twitter profile, Arkhamdoc purports to be a Dr. David Miller in Gotham, New Jersey. He's got a LiveJournal, and his userinfo lists someone named gothamtimesjimd as a friend. There are a ton of obvious Batman references; beyond that, I have no clue what it is. Has anyone else noticed it, or figured out whether it's anything?

This is written underneath the "drdmiller" in the bar above the nav bar:
Code:

.:.:.:. .:: ..:. .:.. .::::.:.

If you space it in 2x2 the first part looks like three repeated symbols and then a different one, which made me think of "www." and the dot in the left middle position would be the period. Then there would be another period later on, but followed by four characters which shoots down the URL theory.

I was thinking it could be Braille with one row removed. But that doesn't work. If the bottom row is missing, there are many characters that don't have a top row and that is just interpunctuation. If the top row is missing the last two characters are "and". If the middle row is missing it start with three "with". Razz

The "www." start still bothers me, but any which way, the pattern breaks at some point. Confused

Sorry, I automatically assumed at some point that there are two dots in the missing row, but it could be any number, leading to different results. Top and middle row missing still need checking.

Oh, and I hope this is not just a LiveJournal thing that means absolutely nothing.

Interesting. Reckon this could be him? No info there, though. Might be a real person?

This could be for the upcoming game Batman: Arkham Asylum, released 08/25/09.

This is definitely a story spoiler, if it turns out to be connected:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Dr. Miller talks about his colleague HQ. Very likely this is Harley Quinn (oh, sweet sweet puns...), who is featured in the game.
her official character page
That would make the patient in question The Joker himself. Shocked
Dr. Miller apparently missed the entire Batman franchise, if he is optimistic to heal that particular patient.

I guess you should explore the blog angles first, before trying to decode the potential Braille-something cipher.

If this does turn out to be another Batman based game, I'm in. One of the panels at Comic-Con that I'm determined to attend is, interestingly enough, a panel focusing on the forensic psychiatry of the criminals of Arkham Asylum.

I'm thinking that with Harley, her voice is a bit shrill. So, it can be annoying after a while. Might be a hint.

This makes me think they have been sitting in wait for a while. Maybe during the setup phase.

very, very interesting. the loads of references are just too much to ignore. i'm almost sure this has to do with the batman video game coming out a month from now.

http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Gotham_City - the gotham city of the batman franchise is indeed set in new jersey, according to this. so positive this is some type of ARG or viral.

keeping an eye on this one.

http://drdrmiller.livejournal.com/

looking at the livejournal, i noticed a few things:

- more typos
- a few mentions of someone named "Crane". pretty sure this is a reference to jonathan crane, a psychologist at arkham and more popularly known as the batman villain scarecrow.
- a mention of someone named "jim". commissioner jim gordon?

Well, I guess every fan knows that, though.
Harleen Quinzel is part of the mythology, too. While she is part of the game and the plot revolves around Arkham Asylum, not sure this is enough to connect it to the game, yet. I found a couple Twitter accounts (HQ, Joker and Rachel Dawes), but was told they are not connected to previous games and the latter two have far too many updates to be recent.
I am not well-versed in the Batman - or any comic, for that matter - universe. I like almost all movies, that's about it.

Regarding your latest questions:

- yeah, he is on a drunken spree since the Joker escaped
- yes, it's that Crane, see the journal down here
- no, it's James M. Davis, writer for the Gotham Times who is keeping this LJ, Miller has friended him although not to be friendly, I suppose...

Could be. If Gordan was interested to try to figure out the psychos in gotham, he might ask for a full readout.

Actually, Dr. Miller hasn't friended Mr. Davis. Mr. Davis has friended Dr. Miller, whether to be friendly or simply to gain insider info for the paper.

The plotline of Jim's journal appears to follow the game in that:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Joker escaped from Arkham and has Harley. Jim and Dr. Miller claim she was kidnapped by the big guy. But according to her info, she's been in love with the guy since she was an intern. The game plot says she helped him escape. The only thing that I can't find evidence of in Batman: Arkham Asylum is that four others escaped with him, as Jim has written.

However, the reason nothing is being done may very well be that both the big bad Bat and Jim Gordon are in Arkham.

Per the Batman wikia regarding the game:
However, the Joker, with the help of Harley Quinn, frees all the inmates and closes the asylum with Batman and Commissioner Gordon inside, threatening to detonate bombs all around Gotham if someone tries to enter the building. Batman must uncover the full extent of the Joker's plan while contending with the horrors of Arkham.

ETA: Another connection is http://lindaforgcpd.livejournal.com/, apparently part of the PR department of the Gotham City PD.

The only thing that confuses me are the people that each of these three have friended. Some of them appear to be well...journals of real people. Others are roleplaying journals. For example, Jim has added as a friend the user "snarkyboywonder", which is someone's roleplay version of Tim Drake (for those who aren't familiar with Batman, Tim is one of the small handful of faces that has worn the Robin costume). Linda has "_darkknight_" and "_thebatman_" - again, both roleplay journals.

I'm going to hold out hope, but part of me has some major doubts now. But if it is, they've picked a really good pic of Harley. Very Happy

Oh yeah, I did notice those tweets, but didn't think to make a thread. I was really, really busy at PretendARGFest.
