Well we've used /research before for the notebooks (www.liniansociety.org/research/nbznotebooks/).
I'm not sure if there is anything else under that directory though.

Also, I found these seven links that I haven't seen before when browsing google for linian studies. They were probably used in some exhibit that I missed but just to be safe:(1 2 3 4 5 6 7)

I passed Lyman's message on to Fritz. He suggests that Lyman's message means there may be support from him, but any contact has to be made away from Linian Society. Lyman does have a Twitter account and a FaceBook account. So I guess, nothing to find on the Linian website. Confused

For the record, here is Fritz's email:

Fritz wrote:
Hmm, he does seem to be suggesting something. Maybe my relationship with the Linian Society isn't completely over, just changed. And no paycheck...

I'm guessing he wants to avoid direct contact with me, but hopefully this means we'll have some support from the Society once we get going again. I guess we'll find out then. I suggest we proceed cautiously with this. Still so many questions about Daniel...

I'm off to an interview. San Francisco Historical Society. Wish me luck.

Farlad, I'm getting "error 404 - page not found" for all of your links. Did they remove the files?

Tweet from Lyman and update on SFLS's site:

Apparently they weren't suppose to be part of this, so they were removed from the website.

Pete Harbeson says...

I sent an email to Peter Harbeson asking him if he could shed some light on what his web site was all about, to which PH responded....

Quote:
Ah! It's completely inexplicable because at the moment I'm using it for testing the rendering engine for mobile web browsers. The endless fields are in use to check various cases for a focus chaining algorithm. It's currently very wide because that's the worst case for a mobile browser to have to deal with. Not to worry, you're not missing any hidden meaning -- there isn't any hidden meaning!

I know I said that I was going to write to Peter Harbeson, but a few things happened. I got some feedback that made me think that perhaps I shouldn't write to a "RL person", and I didn't get any feedback that suggested it was a good idea... Then I kind of forgot about it. However, while the main page of "Simplify, Simplify" is, I believe, simply Pete's own, RL experimentation, there are still two (possibly three) pages on his website that are most definitely in-game.

They are:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

http://www.peterharbeson.com/DPs_Journey.html
and
http://www.peterharbeson.com/exploration.html

I found them via http://thisisrand.wordpress.com

There is one other page that may or may not be part of this ARG:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

http://www.peterharbeson.com/byronton/index.html

While his reply about the main page of Simplify, Simplify certainly clears up any confusion, and is very helpful to know, I still wonder if asking him about his relationship with Rand would yield any information.... I also am very curious about "The Byronton Profundite"! (I still think that I saw the ship name "Striver" somewhere else... but frustratingly, I can't remember where!! Of course, it could be that it was one of the keywords in an earlier version of "Simplify, Simplify", but I don't think it's that...). The "Profundite" does seem to have references to Antarctic exploration, which seems a rather big coincidence. There is also, at the bottom of the first column, a note:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Call at 34 McGuffin Alley between the hours of 3 and 4; the Blue Door." For anyone unfamiliar with the term McGuffin, here is one link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacGuffin . Could this be a clue?

@Arcas - since you have already written to him, do you think you might be able to write back about these specific subjects - or do you think I should? (Or do people think no one should?)

One last note: The slow pace of this ARG (it is an ARG, isn't it? LOL), combined with the very elaborate pages that have been created for it, makes me a bit hesitant to go poking into areas that perhaps aren't supposed to be found yet. However, the pace and work already put into it make it all the more intriguing, IMO! I already have a lot of pages bookmarked under "Linian Studies". Would people be interested and would it be appropriate to list them in this Trailhead? Please let me know what your opinions are!

Here's what I wrote back to PH.
Arcas wrote:
Well, you can count on me to check your site every now and then hoping for a good puzzle or mysterious hidden meanings. I can't get enough of that stuff.

By the way, I first found your site while following the blog entries by a man named Rand for whom you posted a couple of pages earlier this year. I was wondering if you ever heard anything more from him? The description of his adventures at the south pole were certainly amazing!

I guess we'll wait and see if he's in or out.

ETA: So, six hours later, I get this response...
Pete Harbeson wrote:
Rand seems to have dropped out of sight at the moment. He was exploring some tunnels that seemed to have very odd temporal properties, and I suspect that might have something to do with it. The one I'm more worried about is Ben Macker. His last known landfall was the Azores, and he was heading for Antarctica in a solo craft. It's a pretty advanced boat, and he's pretty experienced for his age, but still he's awfully young, and the extreme southern Atlantic is no picnic. Also in the Azores he thought he might have been followed by somebody...anyway, he hasn't been heard from in some time. I've alerted his parents; they have pretty considerable resources and didn't seem very worried.

Now, you have to admit that's a pretty in-game response. Weird, huh?. Should we be focused on Ben Macker?

ETA: inserted tags to the quotes to make it easier to follow.

Great work, Arcas!! I knew that if someone asked him the right questions we'd get in-game answers!

[Arcas, I just PM'd you about continuing correspondence with Pete, and how you think it should be handled...it didn't make sense to post all of my questions on the forum.]

I do think we should focus on trying to track Ben down. I'm still curious about Rand and his connection with Norene. The only tie between Ben and Rand is a pocketknife - talk about a MacGuffin! However, Rand's "special ability" with his "merkerba" (sp?) as he calls it, might be useful in finding Ben (therefore, find Rand and ask him about Ben).

I sent a Facebook request to Rand, but haven't had a reply. I noticed that some people here (Trillian? Enaxor?) are on his friend list. Have you tried messaging him at all recently?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Speaking of Facebook, has anyone friended the guy with the BSAI logo for an avatar (can't rem him name)? I didn't want to for fear that friending him would keep Rand or Lyman or Daniel (etc.) from trusting me... However I think we should try to get as much info about "the Smithies" as possible... Please PM me if anyone has an idea about proceeding down that path...Specifically, do you think the "Linian" characters would care about something like that (appearing to be friends with the BSAI)? I did join the BSAI group, but I don't see much there that screams for attention...

I still can't believe the wealth of information and sites that up for this - and yet it seems to move at a snail's pace, and very few of us seem to even be noticing it!

OK. Here's what I sent back to PH.

Arcas wrote:
I read through Ben Macker's blog and you're right! The way his communication just suddenly stops is very disturbing. Furthermore, he seems to be mixed up with the Benjamin Smyth Antarctic Institute. He said his mother was "...not sure about the institute" and I share her sentiments completely. They recently made quite a scene at a lecture given by the Society for Linian Studies, and seem absolutely ruthless in their aims.

I understand that Ben's parents are in a secretive line of business/research, but I was wondering if there might be some way I could contact them. They know their son's capabilities well enough, and if they aren't worried, perhaps it's nothing. But I have some information that relates to the BSAI that they may find relevant.

I don't know if this is the right button to push, but he's got to have something to share, doesn't he? I mean he apparently knows Ben's parents. Question

Linian Transportation Technology

While Randall Podes may be in possession of a Linian artifact which allows him to travel long distances in a short amount of time, it has come to my attention that some lost Linian technology related to transportation may be being used today! The implications of this application of Linian technology are mind-boggling! Jetpack

LOL! Looks nice enough, but can I have it in red?

I sent a friend request to David Nenman a while ago & started looking for a blog, twitter-account or such thing of him, but he never answered & I had no luck finding anything.

Not recently. I sent him a mail before he vanished for the second time but he didn't react.

Arcas, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you succeed in getting some answers from Pete Harbeson! Learning more about Ben and how he fits in would certainly be useful. Great work!
