So wait, question again...

... I went and rewatched most of #15 and I am finding it hard to tell whether Tim's "hey, it's J, right?" is from someone who has met J before and is trying to make sure he is remembering correctly, or is someone who HASN'T met J, and is asking, "you are this J person, yeah?"

Does that make sense?

Or am I forgetting... are there any other videos besides 15 and 17 in which both Tim and J appear? Is there any mention of them ever hanging out together besides this time while shooting footage for MH? My memory is shot (o noes?).

Or has he forgotten meeting J, in the same way that J doesn't remember that day at all? Or are they definitely familiar with one another in #15?

Also Tim is waaaay cute. Totally my type.

If you're taking about the Entry where they are filming raw footage of Marble Hornets, then no. You're thinking of Entry 5.

Then who was filming 9?

Haha, I thought the same thing :P

Anyway.. I'm kinda thinking that it'd be kinda moot to be recording to remember/see what happened during blackouts or whatever if the equipment is failing anyway? Like from #17 the video is frozen for some time.

Well, that's the first time we have straight up equipment failure. Everything is strange visuals and audio cutting out... which is still better than nothing.

And I'm telling you, that audio freezing is from Slender Man having some kind of outburst. I mean, even if I'm wrong, looking at past entries and this one, it's obviously different than usual. What could cause it to go from hunky-dory to OH GOD THE SKY IS FALLING?

As much as I disliked the theory from the start, the whole SM not liking or wanting water thing REALLY seems to be true. I mean, they're practically shoving it down our throats at this point, aren't they? totheARK, DELUGE, WATER BOTTLE accompanied by visual tear in Entry #16, RAIN in Program, WATER EFFECT over Brian in Advocate, RAIN in Impurity, the whole poem thing in Operator (LAKES in Stillness will Take Every life of the Night) (there's probably more that I missed). And now water is consumed right in front of SM and the footage is completely destroyed thereafter? For now, at least, I think I'm sticking with the "SM being significantly connected to water" theory.

And the 2nd set of videos coming from "totheARK." The Ark being a mythical vessel for protecting mankind from a deluge.

If we also assume SM is causing the equipment malfunctions, then one could reason SM's nature/powers/aura is affected by the water; maybe it acts to dilute, amplify, or block it.

I'm in the same camp as you Baron, especially after your recap, however where did the whole "SM afraid of water" angle come from? I'm fairly certain I recall that in the SA Forum post that birthed the SM idea he lived around or near lakes and streams in the forest and would hide in fog. Granted SM is a community creation and can be modified however the narrator sees fit. I'm still curious where/how this theory was born.

Re: Slender Man's usual haunts being established as near water:

If the footage becomes destroyed when water is shown, can't we imply just as easily that Slender Man is deriving some sort of power from the presence of that water, and that's when he amps the aforementioned field?

That seems just as likely as Slender Man suddenly being deeply unhappy about water showing up and freaking out. It also wouldn't contradict anything that ToTheArk has posted. I feel like unless I'm missing something (entirely possible), either one is equally viable--a weakness or a source of strength/an anchor.

From what I've seen, I would say it's amplifying his powers. In Entry #16 when J picks up the water bottle, the video tears and you can hear a noise. I doubt SM was in the house; I think if he was outside the house, once the water was disturbed, his presence was "felt" by the camera.

I'm not sure, I just didn't want to say he was attracted to it if the opposite was entirely possible. I just meant they were connected. After seeing your post, the former seems more plausible than the latter, but I wouldn't rule anything out yet.

(Edit : >< was ninja'ed by Baron, goshdarnit!)

Hi, nice to meet you all! (Yes, yet another MarbleHornets nooblet, I know xD)

If the theory that SM uses electromagnetic fields to mess about with the tapes (tapes can be wiped with a strong magnetic field) and to mess with people's heads (wiping their memories in the same way, messing with people's neurons in affect) the whole water thing could come into play quite easily I think.

There's 2 ways this could go.
1) Using the fact that water is a poor conductor of electricity, you could say that the water is acting as a charm keeping SM's EM waves out, thus making him have to boost his signal, causing interference with the camera that is away from the water. (Mmmm.... pseudoscience ftw!)

2) You could also use the common misconception that water is a good conductor of electricity and say that the water is amplifying the SM's EM field thus making him stronger rather than angrier, leading to the effects on the tape. (not that conductors work like that but hey, we're dealing with SM here)

If this has been brought up before, my apologies.

Wow, I love this. It's really making me think. The one thing that's bothering me at the moment is that not everything is falling into place as quickly as I thought it would, but that's just a personal peeve. But I'm thoroughly enjoying this; it's engaging, creepy, and makes me think.

Also, I like to think that Alex didn't film himself constantly so he could remember the things that happened to him but rather that the filming drives Slender Man away or something like that. But I'm not sure. We really need more info to confirm or deny that.

Yet water as a conductor is a hell of a lot better than some other things I could mention. Wood, cotton anyone? If that were the case, I think he'd flip out from seeing people in clothes more than he would from seeing a water bottle.

Yeeeah, you guys can have Tim. I'm getting me some tentacle'd no-face.

Entry #17 seems to give one or two possible reasons for Alex's constant tapping of himself.

1) His memory was compromised similar to the way J's was. He couldn't clearly remember things, or at least SM so he began taping himself as a way to really see what was happening. Since his memory was a lie.

and/or...

2) The taping kept SM at bay in the sense he wouldn't make a serious move towards Alex as long as the camera was on and filming. Obviously he's caught on film in quite a number of entries however he doesn't ever seem to make contact.

I agree, this makes perfect sense to me. Well, both do, so that's where I shall put my proverbial money. I always liked the theory that somehow recording the videos kept SM away, but the idea that there are now missing pieces to the story that the character(s?) don't remember adds another reason as to why the tapes are essential.

BaronVonCakeman wrote:
That's something else I've noticed and have been pondering: I wonder if the whole project was made up by Alex just as an excuse to film himself and his friends/other people?

I can't say I like the prank theories at all. They sort of ruin the myths of slender man and cheapen it a bit somehow.

Alex is a film student. He's pretty much guaranteed to have to tape his friends at some point or another. Less a conspiracy/perverted desire than a necessity because film students are just that broke

The water as a weapon theory doesn't really make sense to me for a number of reasons.

First, remember how ridiculous most people thought the ending of Signs was? You'd think the creators would be aware that most people think the mere presence of water as a foil for a story's villain is totally ridiculous.

Also, if we're going to start saying that water somehow disrupts SM's electrical or telepathic powers--humans are 80% water! Why would drinking 10 oz of water or even just having it in a bottle make any difference??

Maybe it's a sign that these people are becoming dehydrated.. SM could be draining them somehow like a tree would take water from the ground immediately around it so that many other plants will die if near it. Or maybe it's just symbolizing something.. But as far as having any concrete utility--that'd be pretty weak.

Reastically, I don't think the creators are much farther ahead in being able to explain what's going on than we are. I'm enjoying the series, but really after 20 or so videos you'd think we'd have a lot more direction than this...
