[META] Methods for solving puzzles?

Is there a place I can find out how the various puzzles have been solved? There are plenty of sites that compile the information, like here, here, here, here and here, to name a few, but many times they just offer the info, without explaining how the puzzle was solved. I think it would be useful to have the methods used to solve the puzzles documented as well.

These are the ones that stick out in my mind:
1. How were s/heismissing.info found? For that matter, how about leiphe.net, wongmo.org and drleokane.com?
2. How are all the various file extensions found (ypt, graffle, etc...) for the Paintover puzzles? Trial and error?
3. How were murpha.com and lifeandcasualty.com found (yes I realize we don't have access to them yet)?

Sorry if these questions have been answered a million times already, I started a little late...

[EDIT] had a typo in one of the URL tags

Well, let me take this opportunity to immortalize the work of thebizrock, who wrote a script to find most the carelessly.* files at aquapolis. Kudos to bizrock!!

After the directory, filename, login etc. were discovered, files with common extensions were pulled. Then Caesar and Texel (some people say - somebody posing as them) appeared in chat and mentioned a carelessly.graffle file as well as the fact that everything was moved from ftp to an http server. Then it was assumed that there are more files with obscure extensions, and thebizrock did the rest.

As for the rest of the puzzles - my suggestion is: do a search for a particular puzzle - for example, leiphe. The first (chronologically) hit that you will get will probably be something like "I was doing ______, and found leiphe.com" Smile

3. using a reverse look up (not the typical nslookup variety) using something like whois.sc (thats what I used and got flamed for doing so ;) )

Basically that site takes all registered domains, loks them up, and puts them in a database. so when you look up the ip, it will find all the virtual hosted domains that are on that ip.. :)

Well, this is the one that hasn't been answered...and they aren't all that mysterious. S/heismissing.info was found by someone after "heismissing" was mentioned in an e-mail from Phil to Beth, telling her to go look at it, if I'm not mistaken. Then someone just randomly tried to change it to "sheismissing," I think. This is turn led us to paintover.net, where the pics are hosted. Which, btw, implies to me that it's Caesar who is searching for these people. But anyway...

Drleokane.com and leiphe.net were found by reverse IP lookup, as yeahyeah said, although, once they became active, they were referred to by other known websites, so we would have found them once we were meant to. Wongmo.org...was that reverse IP lookup as well? I think it probably was, that's what a search seems to indicate. Although we would have found it once drleokane.com went online. Smile

If you click on either picture it takes you to the other one.

Yes, but that's a recent development. It wasn't like that when the sites first went active. In the beginning, I believe that the pics linked to the e-mail address, and the "Tell me" link wasn't there. Very Happy
