Automated ARGs?

Ok, lets pretend that you are making a Documentary film on ARGs.

In the film, we are following some players in a game. The puppetmasters of the game are also seen in action and interviewed. Plus, key figures in the history of ARGs are interviewed.

Now, if you need to attach an ARG to the documentary, what could you do?

If you create an ARG that is limited in time, the viewers who watch the film 2 years after the ARG is finished could not participate in the game.

Is it possible to automate an entire ARG? To have it online, without needing human intervention, for ever?

Or what other idea does come to your mind if you were asked to create an ARG for a documentary about ARGs?

EEK, this post left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth... I decided to go look at your other posts, because the hunch that this really wasn't hypothetical was real strong - and true as it seems.

Why not hire someone to help you, we have VERY talented PMs in our community. Many PMs also do consulting work.

At the very least, be upfront and don't claim this is a hypothetical when clearly you want to use other people's ideas for your documentary. Nothing wrong with asking for a little help - I just don't agree with your methods.

Hmmmm....

What you might be looking for is an automated puzzle trail.
There are some in the Timewasters forums.

What comes to mind is the puzzle trail that was used for the Davinci code, where you had to browse a bunch of websites and each one leading to the next.
This concept is one that can stay online for eternity and can be replayed at any time.
However, hardcore ARG players will not classify it as an ARG as one of the characteristics of an ARG is the interaction with the characters, so unless you do this in an automated way (chat bots, auto reply emails etc. etc.) it would just be a puzzle trail.

Anyway, possibly still better than nothing.

Dominic

I think we knew he was doing a documentary from his previous posts...I think this might be his style of immersing you in his thoughts (ie "put your self in my shoes, imagine that...blah blah blah...what would you do?") Wink

Anyway, I toyed with the idea of having an automated part to my current game. It certainly can be done, but the problem is developing the story and character interactions.

I think developing the story would not be such a problem. The reason why I abandoned the idea is that I could not think of a way to (on my own) develop any kind of player-character interactions and give the ability to the players to be able to change the game outcome and details.

I think if you remove these elements you are left with a Puzzle Trail, which is clever and can be fun, but IMHO it is NOT an ARG.

If you want to develop a game for a documentary, you can certainly have an "infinite and automated" COMPONENT. But it would have to be only a COMPONENT. I would recommend building a Puzzle Trail "backbone", around which you can develop a story and character interactions. The key would be that each puzzle would serve as a way for your story to develop and allow players to influence characters. Then, the solving of each puzzle would NATURALLY lead to the next puzzle. This way, long after you have moved on to bigger and better things and have abandoned us ARG-addicts to our fates, the Puzzle Trail will remain. I think if you want to leave a "Legacy" this is the easiest way to go about it.

Of course you could create something fantastic with thousands of followers and sell the rights to other PMs once it is finished to continue the franchise Wink

(ie, Barbie - The ARG (run by you)
followed by The Return of Barbie, then The Murder of Barbie, then The Revenge of Barbie the Zombie, etc which would be run by others. Wink

Sure. Some people might not consider it an ARG, per se. But you can certainly do things that have an arg-ish feel about them. For example, the various little 10 minute games by Fourth Wall Studios. Or, going older, Online Caroline or the BBC's Jamie Kane (of course, neither of the actual games are available, but they could be as they were sort of automated ARGish experiences things of some sort)

Sure, but if you're doing a documentary about ARGs where you will be following the experience of the players and the PM(s), then you would not want one of those games to represent the genre.

Nothing against them, but I just think that the archetypal ARG will be one in which you might have an automated component, but you'd want the player/PM relationship to be dynamic.

I am doing this on spec, on my free time, trying to get a little money to develop this project. In documentary filmmaking, you depend on the goodwill and generosity of people.

If this documentary gets made, it will be beneficial to all of you.

Fourth Wall seems to have captured the essence of a replayable experience that could be called an ARG, for sure, and there's always puzzle trails that tell a story, etc., so I think you could really do a decent mockup of the experience to give a taste to the documentary viewers of what playing one is like.

Part of the 'magic' of ARGs will always be the community response and organization and group motivation towards common goals, for me. It's difficult to get close to that in a replayable format, but perhaps you could drop in little places where people can 'convene' - if they make it to a certain point in the story, maybe there's a virtual wall they can leave a graffitti tag on, or a guestbook or a special hidden forum (if the plot is post-apocalyptic in nature, it might make sense that people are only passing through in small groups or individually).

G'luck!

Thank you all, your answers were all very helpful and enlightning!

I am very close to sending my proposal to a producer, who may send it to a broadcaster. I will keep you posted as I keep my fingers crossed.
