Well blast and buggery! Already signed up to a half marathon that weekend and it's for the NSPCC so I can't really slack it off Sad

Enjoy yourselves guys and gals, I'll just have to tag along with the pretend ARGFest crowd.

So I told the wife the dates... then spent the next hour trying to explain exactly what it is. I've been doing this for two years now; you'd think she'd caught on by now. Razz

HAHA omg every year I go through the same agonising thing... I feel your pain! And I think I'm going to go through the same agonising thing again this year, only with more begging and pleading... Damn its like being a kid again and asking for a bike for my birthday...

The only way to win is not to play. If they don't get it the first time you explain, they're never gonna.

New website appears to be up at http://2010.argfestocon.com

To be honest, kinda glad I'm not going. Feels more corporate-BS-ish to me for some reason... like it's trying to advertise the format to the world in general, rather than just the fun good time the last two years.

Putting my finger on one thing that brings that to mind, the 3-prong "think/play/do" thing feels really corporate to me.

...and the "events" page has some rather wacky looking Javascript code that generates an error...

I think that was because the Facebook page was "unpublished" for non-members. Can you try again to see if it does work now?

Oops, it does seem to have some javascript issues on IE that do not show on FF, Safari or Chrome Confused We'll look into it, thanks!

A group of unpaid volunteers is working their asses off on making ARGFest a success, and the only reason this succeeded so far (not only the last two years that were so much fun for you but also the many years before that) is because of the fact that most of the time half of it got paid for out of our own pockets and with the help of a few very generous friends.

So excuse us for trying to find a way to broaden the audience for ARGFest by adding a games festival and a professional angle to see if we can generate more interest, attract more sponsors and thus generate more income and make it a better and more fun experience.

And excuse us for our logo that is "not to your taste" and feels like corporate-BS. We have no professional designers among our ranks, so, sorry, this is the best we could do. We put an ARGFest design competition out there months ago, because we can use every bit of help that we can possibly get on things like this, so next time, send in an entry of your own, or find a designer friend who is willing to or whatever, but stop complaining from the sidelines.

Wait, I'm not allowed to voice my opinion now? Now I'm really glad I'm not going.

Looks like fun!!! After participating in Come Out and Play for the past few years, I can tell you that the street games and scavenger hunts are a blast! The site is great and easy to navigate. Although the slogan,..shouldn't "drink" be one of the verbs... Wink

I love the way ARGFest is always evolving, changing, growing, taking on new and difficult challenges. Just like the genre...and the community.

Of course, getting sponsors for ARGFest is essential. I know the organizers work hard to keep the cost to the participants as low as possible. The organizers donate their valuable time and actual cash to make the event happen. Finding sponsors to cover the costs of the major expenses (just putting down deposits on meeting rooms, sound equipment, video, all that stuff, is expensive) is the only way that ARGFest can happen without charging participants a fortune.

I don't know if I can make it this year, but I am definitely going to try my best. But thanks to all the organizers for their hard work and creative ideas to keep ARGFest moving forward!!! You guys are awesome!!

You can absolutely voice an opinion, but you should also give us a bit of understanding. Over the last however many years, we've worked tirelessly and at our own expense to make ARGFest happen. And, as always, the loudest voices in our exhausted minds are those whining about how much ARGFest sucks. We know that's not true. We know how much folks love ARGFest. But it's so easy for the complainers to echo in your mind. So, when the very first comment we hear is your tweet telling us how much it sucks? Well... it tends to make it a bit not so fun to be doing this. Can you understand that?

Can you understand why we're so frustrated when the only thing you comment on is... a logo. A logo that feels too corporate? You didn't notice the fact that, for the first time, we're opening it up to let the community submit panels & games. No more is it just a committee sitting behind closed doors gathering speakers and deciding what we should talk about. And the longer ARGFest with more to do and a games festival - all of that came out of conversations, suggestions, and feedback from last year's conference.

But, no, you're glad you're not going to ARGFest because of a crappy logo. A crappy logo that may actually make the weekend possible - that corporate polish makes it easier and more approachable for agencies and such to sponsor us. Those sponsorships are what will make ARGFest happen. They won't change the feel of the Fest. They'll just make it possible for us to do what we've always done.

Oh, and bonus! they'll actually keep the costs down so that more of us can attend. But not you... you're hardcore. You won't sell out your design aesthetic! You won't go to any festival with amazing games and speakers. You won't see a ton of your best friends from the internets! No! Not you! Not if the logo looks.... gasp.... corporate!
