Yeah, I just picked it up because I don't want to risk it getting lost during delivery on campus or getting a package during the summer.

Here are photos:

Traditional box.

The Bit.

Mysterious letter pieces. The "do" could also be "op" and looks as though it was pasted onto a piece of paper.

I'm thinking those phones will start ringing soon as it's a lot to ask folks to be immediately available for an extended period.

Human nature will quickly render that avenue less viable as people forget to charge them, carry them or check them for messages. Plus the costs/hassle of keeping them all activated.

Virgin Mobile phones have two cutoffs:
+30 days any minutes from a pre-pay pack are lost
+90 days the phone number is disconnected from the phone.

As it appears these phones have cash balances, bonus minutes, and bonus text messages, I can't say for sure that the normal pre-pay rules apply. When Virgin used to do "Sugar Mama" your bonus minutes carried over so long as you had a positive balance or put at least $20 on every 30 days.
However, bonus or no bonus, if there is zero account activity (no money added) for 90 days, the phone number is disconnected. That date, at least on my phone, is May 19, 2010.

So basically, something has to happen by May 19th or the phones become worthless. Also, from calling Virgin Mobile myself, there is an active PIN on the phone. Which means yes, you can add a "top up" card if there's some weird need to use the phone and you want to keep a positive balance. And it also means that you cannot go online or via operator and modify the phone in any way before May 19th-ish.

If you add balance to a Virgin phone before 30 days is up, you should roll over your balance. The pin number - V-Key in Virgin parlance - is set by whoever activated the phone. There are means to retrieve it, but I wouldn't particularly tamper with it just yet. I certainly think there's no harm in adding balance to the phone as it is. I suspect that if the PMs wish to assure the phones can be used in the future, they'll be sure there's balance there to do it. The thing I find interesting is the 'bonus' stuff - that's not too common on the Virgin phones I've dealt with. (Other prepaid carriers bundle minutes, balance, or features with some of their phones.)

It's six digits, and I played with a few combos and defaults that I could think of before leaving it be. Like Euchre said too, and this is just from the 3 phones I've bought from them over the years, I've never had the odd bonus stuff (one bonus for getting a new phone was 60 minutes, same as when I gave away one phone that got re-activated, got 60 minutes) so I'm guessing it's some custom hook-up the PMs are using.

OK! So, what I'm gettin' here, Edgecrusher... is that if we try to hack the phone PINs, they'll explode. Laughing

(It's a joke!)

So did the envelope that the phone came in have a charger too? I wasn't keeping up with the thread here on the day of the event, so I never found out what the UFers actually got. I saw the YouTube vid of the guy in Austin, though -- their contact at the Twilight Zone pinball machine was a total hottie!

Speaking of which, did anyone we know get the drop in Atlanta? If I didn't live 20 minutes from the site I would've had a better shot at it.

Have you got some photographic evidence to back up such a claim, sir?

I humbly submit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFhjWPSHxcs -- she starts at 2:33!

FYI - My phone and charger were handed to me in a beat-up brown paper bag. The phone is sitting on the bag it came in here:

No writing on the bag, and it has not been checked under blacklight...yet.

Oh right, I saw that picture and promptly forgot that there was a charger in it! Hm ok, so my guess would be that since they gave you a charger, I imagine they will be tracking your minute balance and expiration date, and will do what it takes to make sure the phone isn't deactivated before the end of the game.

I say "since they gave you a charger" as that definitely implies that your responsibility is to keep it charged and not worry about the rest, or else they probably would have included a pre-paid Virgin card and instructions about how the phone's contract expiration worked.

Also, I'm sure this was mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but can you guys who got the drop tell me what the badge/honor was for being one of the 25 to do that, assuming there was one? I'm already upset that I couldn't get the "Screen Scene" one (I think it was called) for going to the trailer screening.

I'm emailing 42E, this phone needs to be sorted, or it will be deactivated.
