In case you're wondering, I made some inquiries of my own for personal reason regarding the "rapid prototyping" process they used to create the "bits".

I've gotten responses from three companies so far that do this sort of thing and, on average, they tell me that these things cost approximately $30-$50 PER CUBIC INCH.

So, for those of you that had the luxury of getting one, these are not cheap trinkets.

Doesn't matter to me if they'd been a half cent each to make, I wouldn't consider their value to be 'cheap trinkets'.

And I still want one.
Very Happy

Not having received one, I can't be sure, but I'd really doubt they CNC'd them all. More likely, they had one of each machined and used that as a positive mold for the resin ones sent out.

Even more likely is that they had a set of negative die molds created via CNC and just used that as a "pour-in" style mold.

I remember someone talking about how theirs was "bleeding" a white substance.
To me, that sounds more like improperly mixed resin more than it does cooling fluid trapped in some mysterious void in the "plastic".

This seemed to imply they were all made in the machine, not by working from a master mold. Note the bath too - that could explain some moisture leakage.

3D Printers
some experience with 3D printers

At a previous job, we had one of those 3D printers. The spool of print material was about $250, if memory serves. Plus there's also the "support" material. The bath you see them dropping the printed-out objects into disolves the support material. It turns into a kind of milky liquid.

The printed out things are essentially porus when they're done. I printed out a tiki-themed shot glass ring, and it could not hold liquid long enough to do the shot... not that I'd want to. that support disolver is kinda... caustic and icky.

They're porus because of the way the material is built up. think of it like a waffle. first it "draws out" the horizontal lines, then it moves up the thickness of the source material, then "draws out" the vertical lines, then moves up, and draws the horizontal again. It produces a not-completely-solid criss-cross of the material. I was talking about the guys at that job, and they said that if you need a perfectly smooth surface, the standard way to go is to coat it in super glue, then sand it down smooth and paint it.

This works great for (fairly brittle) prototypes of physical devices without having a 3rd party company fab one up in plastics.

Small things like the bits would take about 4+ hours to print, and use about $20-$40 in raw materials. The printer also cost about $12k for the model we had. Add on to that additional costs/time to create the objects, etc.

Be careful with those bits. If they're direct-from-the-printer, and not resin copies, they might shear along a layer if dropped. I'd be willing to bet that they're just printouts, and not resin copies. I'd personally love a resin copy of one. Wink

Can anyone do macro photos of them? I'm curious.

I'm pretty sure this company had a hand in making the bits:

That's a 3D scanner, not a printer... Smile

Yeah, I'm aware. I'm still pretty sure they had a part in it, because a comment was left on my site that the commenter asked me to delete because he had broken non-disclosure agreement.
