This is a bit off topic, but I was wondering how many of you have signed up on 42E's website so you know when they have other ARGs starting up? I like what I've heard about the DK ARG and this one has been amazingly fun. Do you all recommend signing up with them?

Hey could you post a link to 42E's website?

You know, Google's search function also works. Laughing Just kidding!

I hate to sound whiney, but I will anyway. I was registered with flynnlives.com early last year. Did I get a bit? Nope. Am I annoyed? Yep. Is it going to kill me? Nope. But I wish I'd known. Ah well.

Known... what?

Seriously, I've done the research before, looking at who got included in trailheads for various games. If you're not "media" or already on the "list", getting included is uncommon. It really only happens on first efforts by a PM/team. Providing tools, utilities and other resources used to sometimes earn you a slot in future games, but that doesn't seem to be the case, anymore. I know I've stopped putting that kind of effort into games. So, unless you're going to set yourself up as press, whining is all that's left. I haven't tried the rabid fanboy thing, 'cause it's not in my nature. I guess you could try that. But for the most part, business is business.

Uh...

Several people that got bits were not press or insiders. They were however apparently registered in some way with 42E - through the site or through some previous involvement with a game or direct communications of said information with someone in or out of character at 42E.

I thought I recalled giving more than just an email and creating an ID with FL back last year, but I couldn't recall exactly and couldn't find any indication in my original email confirmation. I missed out on the Bit too, and it bummed me a bit, especially after going a VERY long way to try to get the drop. (Particularly when I found out the drop was picked up by SpaceBass, and he had tried to wait for more people like myself to appear - but was pushed ahead by the PMs.) However, they seem to have listened and learned from some of those early experiences, and in my view have plenty well made up for it.

Of course if 42E still wants to send me a blue Bit or Idnetity Disc, I'm not too proud to take it. Laughing

I'm sure that, technically, that's quite true.
But, in researching the first ten people receiving a bit on the trailhead thread, I think I'm safe standing by my previous statement. The two that don't readily fit the criteria I listed could easily be assumed to be in an influential field based on their "in the wild" interests or title, alone; Without even knowing how they registered at 42.
i.e. Screenwriting/writing, movie reviewer/critic, "President".

Looks to me like getting on the 'list' is done by any or all of:

Registering with 42E

Having previously played a game that 42E ran, like TDK (Why So Serious), Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, or possibly even earlier games, which involved giving your information in some way

Not being fussy Rogi Ocnorb Laughing

But really, if you are running a movie, gaming, or other media website you're likely to register with every promotional company you can find. If you've got anything resembling a staff, you are going to get them to register to increase your chances of getting something. I don't see conspiracy on 42E's part there.

As for a profile on uF with 'President' in your sig, I could be president of a local chapter of some club - that doesn't magically make me important to viral promotion. Every Joe Schmoe on the internet can set up a blog and call themselves a 'movie critic' or 'screenwriter', and lots do. Doesn't mean anything.

ETA: We've got some really humble people around here!
(You people are cracking me up.)

Except for the last 2 of your 3 bullet points about how to get on the list, we're in perfect agreement. Very Happy

My impression was that you had to
1. Be registered with 42E
2. Be registered with FL.
3. Be registered with this board.

I actually wrote a very polite letter to them asking about this- that is, what exactly was the story since there were some feathers that had been ruffled. Never heard back. ::shrugs:: Much as I'd like one, it's all part of the game, and I'm happy just to be a part of it.

I was all of the above and scored a No Bit, though I don't have a clue what the criteria was for getting one. I imagine it was random selection save the press folks they sent them to because I assure you I'm no one special in the grand scheme of things ARG-wise.

People who were not members of this forum got Bits. Some of those were the sign-up-for-everything-movie-site type, but I'm under the impression not all were.

thought I'd just chip in with this, I got one of the blue neutral bits, I was registered on all the sites mentioned under the same name.

I'm feeling kinda pi**ed now if the feeling is that there were so few made as the packaging that it came in was thrown out as rubbish by someone who shall remain nameless, you know who you are lol Smile and like Robbie I'm nothing special in the world of ARGs
