Look, just because it's on hiatus doesn't mean it's over just yet. Please be patient. That's how I'm dealing with it. If it makes you feel any better, I'm just about to email 42 Entertainment to see what the hold-up is. OK?

First, don't expect a response. Second, no one said anything is over. But we just have to understand that this isn't, and hasn't been, a typical ARG. As long as we're ok with that, we just sit tight and see what happens.

Can these things ever be said to be ARG's?

I mean, Why So Serious, HETFET, I Love Bees, Cloverfield - they all promoted a product, and led directly to other promotional media (trailers/posters/screenings/gaming sessions) - to me they seem like viral promotions with ARGish elements to them.

Of course, they all apply. But I think what we're seeing here are some primary differences:

1) Those all had much more of an overriding story arc.
2) Those all started, went along with few pauses, and then finished with the release of the product
3) Those all weren't primarily set around a few appearances at a trade show (SDCC). There were multiple live events that weren't related to a scheduled show.

I don't disagree that all ARGs are essentially an agreement between the studio and the fans. We'll be super fans and tell all our friends, generating as much hype as we can, and they'll give us stuff and experiences for being good marketing tools. It's an altruistic relationship, and if I like the product, I don't mind being a willing advertiser. Of course, none of us have seen the end product we're generating hype for, so that's where the risk comes in, but the reward of unique swag seems to be worth that risk to our reputation amongst our friends and such.

Not to get sidetracked on marketing theory...this one is just a bit more transparent in that department. It's harder to get lost in the story. As Shad said, there clearly hasn't been much work to retain immersion here. I concur.

Sure, it's had its moments (I wish I could have been there for the Encom rally), but overall, it's been more haphazard, less focused, less story-based, and now, less well paced.

I was looking back at old timelines, and that's what got me thinking about differences. I didn't see any gaps (> 2 weeks) where there wasn't something to do on The Beast, I Love Bees, Year Zero, or Why So Serious (I only played the first three...although reading the Wired piece on Year Zero, it sounds like any delays were them waiting for the players to pirate the album). I haven't played other ones that weren't from 42 or their previous incarnations, so I can't say how other PM's have handled ARG pacing.

But the point is, it's definitely odd to have months of continuous build up only to slow down within 3 months of release. I'd have done less in February and more now, and I'd have to believe they know that, too. QED: possible outside delay reasons, possibly budgetary.

Anyway, we have nothing better to do now, so I thought I'd chime in on the idle speculation. Smile

I agree with not understand why the slow down has happened now, in all honesty I imagined this being a fairly involved story at this point - we were introduced to the Flynn Lives movement, and through them we eventually met Sam.

I had thought that once we'd met him, the focus of the story would shift over to him a little more, maybe the relationship between him and Alan and we'd be led up to the point where Alan receives the page from Kevin.

There's still 3 months left, but I do still wonder if the name of the club at SDCC was meant to be taking literally with regards to the game.

Remember ELOC is the name that Flynn gave the club partially because it was the end of line at the end of a day at work where the programs could relax and hangout and have fun. The event may have just that and not mean the end of the ARG.

Yeah I realise that, but it would be a fitting name for the end of something Tron-centric.

It does seem like a logical conclusion to the (however thin) story we've been following. We joined the movement to find Kevin Flynn, we got in touch with his son to discover what he was up to, we gained access to Flynn's personal terminal and got information about trying to create an alternate utopian reality, we got our own identity discs, we found Flynn's office in the back of the arcade and got digitized into the system. End of Line.

Obviously, it doesn't make sense to end the viral campaign 5 months before the film is set to release, but it does seem like a fitting ending…

Or... This could be where the "alternate reality" part kicks in Wink

Either way, you guys REALLY need to stop being so pessimistic about this break from the game. 42 would've indicated by now if it was over. Trust me guys, I'll say it before and I'll say it AGAIN: we're not done with Flynn Lives just yet and neither is 42 Entertainment! Capice? Mad

I'm not being pessimistic, I'm just choosing not to be overly optimistic because at this point we simply don't know what's going on. Like I said, it doesn't make sense for the campaign to end this far in advance, but there's also evidence to support that it has ended.

My point is that, while I'm not convinced that it's over, I'm allowing myself to be ok with the fact that it might be.

While I'm usually the realist, I'm liking this theory.

I'm thinking if something ARG related happens at NYCC, that'll confirm we were just on a hiatus. Its not your typical ARG by far but its been fun so far and I appreciate the effort Disney, the Tron team and 42 Entertainment has put into it. And the swag has been nice. Smile

Do we know that this is 42E, forsure? It is their style of gameplay, regarding the time lapse in updates. But, has their been an official announcement, IP tracing back to them? What has lead us to believe this is 42E?

If you look on 42E's website, you will find who she is here.

To be clear: I did not intend my entirely unnecessary discourse on the nature of this campaign as an indication that I think "Flynn Lives" is over. I don't. While I doubt that anything will happen in New York -- there are obvious geographical reasons why the major real-world events have taken place in California -- I strongly suspect that we will be seeing another chapter shortly before TRON: Legacy opens.

I'm thinking with the amount of stuff in CA when the Electronica thing opens at California Adventure there might be something (which is why I'm trying to make it to opening night). I'm agreeing that I don't think anything big will happen in NY but then again I don't know how big NYCC is.
