Just got off the phone with John. Everyone is okay right now, but he believes their network has been compromised, so we won't be hearing from them via the internets anytime soon. John is in contact with them via radio. Once we have figured out the code, we need to call him asap.

EDIT: Btw, he said he can be contacted anytime, day or night, so don't let the time stop you. Smile

Brainstorming here.....

The first image ("There is so much about...."), I think comes from some time when the plague was bad. I don't know if it would help with the cypher any, but does anyone know what language is on the ribbons in the image?

The second image ("Because history is important").....I thought it was plague at first, but it looks like they are throwing bodies (children?) down a well....possibly to make other people sick?
Dangermonkey mentioned the 14th century Spanish. Might it depict either a) the Spanish's reaction to the practice of human sacrifice found in South America or
b) an early form of bio-warfare practiced by the Spanish? I know much of the native population was decimated by smallpox when the Spanish showed up, but not sure if it was intentional or not.

Forgive me, my history is shoddy at best, so I could be way off base

D'oh - I tried Webdecrypto on the first ciphertext, but when that came up with nothing I didn't try the second before looking elsewhere. Nice work!

As for the other image, I've been looking at anything related to the Conquistadors. They did bring diseases to the new world such as smallpox that devastated many populations.

Hrm, I have been working on this last one for awhile now and ive yet to be able to decrypt it. Went through and tried every key I could think of and other decrypters aren't pulling out much more than gibberish.

I know after Columbus discovered them, many of the Indians were murdered (Going along with the Spanish theme of the artwork) but i'm not finding much useful here.

I have also been researching subject matter relevant to this picture and I can't find anything largely significant to mass infanticide around that period of time.

From at least how it looks, they are only killing the children as the others sit safely upon the well. Another interesting aspect of this picture is that it seems the children are being killed haphazardly (thrown into well) while one is being purged of its blood into a container. What ive researched on ritualistic purging of childrens blood, especially in that time frame has turned up little of use.

Hopefully what ive looked up so far will help one of you have a better idea where to look.

Edit: I leave the following on here, but my (entire) reasoning is bad. "vf" can easily stay the same applying Vigenere. "iid" could be a coincidence, plus that is one of the problematic points during transcription. Exclamation

I think the cipher looks good for simple sub. "vf" appear twice in the front. There is even a trigraph "iid". But that can form precious little words.
"smtodhvmpst" does not even decrypt by itself.

Which made me think to reverse it. Punctuation aside. Doesn't work, if you take the entire thing into Decrypto. Although that's dangerous, since we don't know we have it transcribed right, but I agree with Toasty's attempt.

Reversing solves some subs probs like "iidhy". Maybe creates others Dunno Below is Genesis 1:27. No go as a Vigenere key

It's more laziness than that, though. Thinking about a(nother) foreign language in the cipher is interesting, but kind of scary. I'd rather reverse it, than going there. Or, you know, researching what these pictures are about and what the topic is right now. Especially since it's history and that's not one of my favorite subjects...

The cipher that's been cracked has a pattern to its cipher alphabet. The letters that are used match up like this:

If I change these to numbers, you'll see it more clearly:
