We might actually see more focused conversation. I think this will be good.

I find a lot of useful discussion happens in IRC as fleeting brainstorms and random ideas tossed out, analyzed, and ultimately dropped as not worthy of documenting on the forum -- and yet, that process is somehow essential to the full experience for me.

On the other hand, I do feel sorry for the player who cannot be in IRC 24/7 and only see the fully-formed solutions pop out of thin air when posted to the forum. That's where documenting the thought process is helpful.

And I've noticed that with the games spreading out into their own cubicles, I'm less likely to lurk or poke my head into their multiple threads as I might have done with a single thread. I like knowing what current puzzles are being worked on and whether or not they need a hand, even if I don't want to actively play along or follow the story. If you do want outsiders to be able to jump in and help with solves, go ahead and tag a topic with [PUZZLE-unsolved] -- and remember to change it to say "SOLVED" later for the convenience of your own players.

I think both IRC and wikis are wonderful tools, but they do have inherent problems.

As catherwood mentioned, not everyone can be in IRC so the discussions had there are temporary and beneficial to the few. So do we add irc chat summary threads? Post chat logs?

Wikis sometimes worry me because they aren't all hosted by sources I know. If new ARGer X gets all excited and hosts a wiki for a game, there's no guarantee it will always be there (and maintained) when they decide ARGs aren't stylish anymore. Or maybe I just have trust issues Razz

Plus it's hard for the PM to keep a low profile and watch what's going on in IRC. Lord knows I've tried... Razz

Or maybe wikis do just become spam aggregators after their respective adventures end. There's nothing like actually wanting to learn about the history of the ARG genre only to find out that once one is over, the documentation is overtaken by more spam content than actual content by at least 10 to 1.
