Vanished...
Find Wired Magazine's Evan Ratliff

Howdy folks,

When I heard about this I knew I had to post it on unfiction… I mean, cheetahs evolved to run fast, polar bears evolved to eat humans, and ARGers evolved to find and solve things.

http://www.wired.com/vanish/2009/08/author-evan-ratliff-is-on-the-lam-locate-him-and-win-5000/

All we need to do is find Evan Ratliff take a photo of him and say "fluke" to him, and then collect the $5,000. Easy enough, right? Laughing

But... he's not a hot brunette? Why should we? Razz

Not thrilled of the prospect of, in order to win, having to meet him in person. Unless he miraculously ends up hiding in Miami...

I thought he was a little dreamy... Rolling Eyes Besides, he is the ultimate dead-drop, a moving target.

Everyone else will have a hard time finding him as well, but we have a community of searchers here. Oh, and if we win the money we can each buy a pizza and have an online pizza party. Just imagine $5,000 worth of pizza.

Wonder if he'll visit Las Vegas?

Unfortunately I usually don't have the free time to track anyone down here in Sin City.

Starting August 15, I will try to stay hidden for 30 days. Not even my closest friends or my editors will know where I am. I'll remain in the US and will be online regularly. I will continue to use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, and I'll make cell phone calls. I'll generally stay in the kind of social environment I like to live in (no hiding in a cabin in Montana), and I'll keep track of my pursuers, searching constantly for news about myself.

Information about me will be posted here at wired.com/vanish. The Web page will provide everything a plugged-in investigator would have, including activity on my frequent flier, credit card, and ATM accounts — if I'm foolish enough to use them. Wired will also post interviews with my friends and family members and log calls made by my usual phones and emails sent from my usual addresses.

To win, you have to locate me between August 15 and September 15. You'll take my photo and say the password: fluke. I'll give you a second code word, known to me and to Wired. Email that word, along with the photo, to my editor at nicholas_thompsonSPLATwired.com. Upon doing so, you will agree to be interviewed so that in a future issue I can tell the story of how you found me.

You will be excluded from winning if you commit a crime in your efforts to find me, contact my family, or physically harm me. In addition, family members, employees of Condè Nast, sources interviewed for this story, and anyone working with me or any of the above people are not eligible. If no one finds me by September 15, no prize will be awarded. Visit this page for full rules.

Since this is a Non-Alternate Reality Game, I think I can suggest a couple of places you might look for help:
*Teeuwynn's @EvansVanished Twitter feed
*The Search for Evan site on Facebook

New update at Wired:

Quote:
The hunt continues for Evan and people assume that he's using Tor to mask his real location. Yesterday, I posted some IP addresses that he used while checking his email and folks have figured out that they are active Tor servers. Here are some more from last night:

77.87.37.69 2:21 am
204.8.156.142 12:34 am

All times are EST.

Ok heres my 2 cents. First off he is a journalist and knows his shit, my guess is he will be checking this and other sites. so if you really want to find him dont post too much info that he can find. Since wired is a national magezine and they want as many folks as possible involved in this my guess is that he will make his rounds. I think he is gonna hit up the South and then make his way to NYC.

One of our keys will be Johnson Thrimp or Thrimp Johnson. Google that shit. He is posting coordinates......This should be nothing for ARGers.

Have we considered the possibility that he has been posting from
http://twitter.com/JohnsonThrimp
??

If that is really him, we should figure out what 121288W and 383320N point to.

EDIT:

Oh, and if we decide that he is posting from the Thrimp Johnson account, then this is interesting:

On August 18th, Thrimp posted "Abundant sunshine. Hot. High 98F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph" Ratliff was last seen in San Francisco on August 15, but the forecast for San Francisco according to this website
http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USCA0987?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared
Says that the high in San Francisco on August 18th was 68 degrees F. Maybe he had already fled San Francisco at that point.

Hory chit! my backyard!

ETA: Per the earlier tweets, he was at the Lighthouse Golf Club course in West Sac (500 Douglas St, Bryte, CA 95605) under a Ponderosa pine.
More recently, he's in the El Dorado Nat'l forest. That's where I live.

Well, unfortunately, it now seems like the entire Johnson Thrimp twitter was a hoax by a Londoner also looking for Ratliff. We should probably discount any and all information coming from that twitter account.

Are you sure it was a hoax? His dossier does say: "Known online alias . . . . . . . Thrimp Johnson ".

Obviously I'm not positive, but I'm confident. The account was created after that dossier information was released.
