Oh, I see, so it's like "original value increased by 2", and the ^ looks like an arrow pointing up. Neat!

Not necessarily -- sometimes '^2' decreases the value by two. For example, the character code for 'c' is 99; 99^2 evaluates to 97, which is 'a':

Code:
  99 = 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0110 0011
   2 = 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0010
99^2 = 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0110 0001 = 97

I know its a bit late, but my very limited knowledge of Java and boolean operators tells me that the character ^ is the boolean operator XOR (exclusive OR). Basically exactly what Shad0 said, but I thought that I'd give it a more recognizable name. Other boolean operators include AND (returns 1 if both bits in question are 1; 0 otherwise), OR (returns 1 if either bit in question is 1; 0 otherwise), and NOT (returns 1 if neither bit in question is 1; 0 otherwise). XOR returns 1 if exactly one bit is 1 and the other is 0, and returns 0 otherwise.

I realize that this has little to no context with this game, but hey, the more you know, right?
