He is pretty good, I'd definitely suggest checking him out.

So, according to the comments in the last link I posted, the guy who won the last competition didn't even know what the competition was or that there WAS a competition. This is all very confusing Shocked

It is really not confusing.... I will start from the begining.

Derren Brown is a very highly trained mentalist. He uses very time tested 'secret' techniques and also some of his own methods. Alot of the type of stuff he is doing has been highly tested by inteligence agancies.
His style employs a lot of techniques where he 'injects' a thought, image or feeling in to your mind using what could only best be described as subliminal messages. Watch the video I linked to. Notice that he tells a similar story every time and that his actions and words are always synced, he always says 'its ok' while handing them the paper. Again, these are highly tested techniques.

Back in like March he sent out some envelopes announcing a 4 part series coming in late summer, the event was called How to Control a Nation. No one really hears anything of significance for months, until this video comes out. There was a bit of chatter on his blog but nothing blatant. Notice all of the subliminal messages in the video? He is preparing us. He is doing a 4 part series for tv. these messages are him planting something into our heads because he is going to do an effect where the at home audience is affected as well.....

This is not an ARG, he did have a competition going around the video but it is over now....He is having 'hidden' contests with 'hidden' clues, someone just won the first one, but if you are not a big Derren Brown fan you will notbe interested in the prizes...

This guy is huge in UK and this is where the show is airing.

The word on different blogs is that he may be planning some sort of jewel heist. He has said he will perform a petentially career ending performance and other hints certainly lead to a jewel heist. THIS IS GOING TO BE CRAZY!!!!

With all the lotterey references though it could have something to do with that, if I were british I would be playing those numbers around that time....

There is more info out there but you all are supposed to be ARGers, do the dirty work yourself, the info is out there.......

Hi, JBlaze, what you said is the obvious stuff, I'm pretty sure that everyone around this thread knows that much. Snipey attitudes like yours are not appreciated.

I'm confused about how someone can win a competition that they didn't know existed. And still no one knows what the competition was or where it was announced.

It's not an ARG, no, but that wasn't apparent from the start, so if it wants to be moved to timewasters - that's fine by me! It's still something puzzley with hidden tasks that most people here would enjoy.

I didn't think JBlaze was being snipey! It was actually nice to get a recap.

There's a lot of Derren Brown fans in the U.S., too! Smile

Im sorry, I really was not meaning to be snipey.

I think what happened is that I was writing about this on two different message boards at once and got the beginning of this one confused with a question that was asked on the other board.....The person said "im confused, is he going to be revealing his tricks?" THats what my "its really not confusing thing was about......

He is, I guess, eluding to the contest very loosely in the posts.
Like if something says " there was a bet that the man could not draw an image with his tongue" I would assume that that is a competition.... It seems as if he is being VERY vague about it....

Did anyone notice the post on his art blog that was titled something like Aug.22 1:45 am.? THats all it said and comments were disabled....I looked all over the blog and it has not been mentioned again....Anyone know anything about the 1:45 thing?

Ok, JBlaze, sorry Very Happy I just sort of read your post the wrong way as happens on the internets, I guess. Apologies, apologies!

Yeah, I saw the time post thing. It was posted actually at that time in the UK (I happened to be refreshing Twitter at the time Razz ) but I'm just baffled by the whole thing. Either there's something going on that is too smart and too subtle for us and everyone else to pick up on or it's some kind of trick or a bunch of subliminal plants to mess with our minds. His blog posts DO have themes...urk, I have no clue. But it's interesting. To me, at least.

Just in case this makes sense to someone... Shocked Here's all the weirdness I can find word-wise from Derren. All the words capitalised did not require emphasis which is why they stand out.

Capitalised words from blog: LOST, LOST, FINDING, TINY, ALREADY

'hidden' capitalised words in blog: ROTOR, ROTOR, JEWEL, REWIND

Capitalised words from Twitter feed: BAN RISKY STUNTS, BACK, BOOK.

Hahaha, thanks, One of my biggest passions is magic so, when I spotted this I was hooked, his work is so good that it makes him seem like a fake.

Yes it is channel 4, I guess.

About his Hints and Clues:
Looking through the blog posts and whatnot, trying to find clues and compare similarities and all that, looking at the old contests. He seems to do a mix of competition styles for example; the competition that was directly associated with the trailer was very overt, he outright said what you needed to do to win. Others, like the Dollar Bill competition seem to have no logical clues at all.
He is suspending our urge to think logically and forcing us to go with our instincts. The terms that the winner seemed to have won on for the dollar bill competition seem to still be very vague, it almost creates an atmosphere for future competitions that dictates that you pretty much need to wing it, there are seemingly no overt clues at all, and the only obvious things seem to likely be Red Herrings. If you have any inkling at all about what the competition is, he wants you to submit your idea. There is even a chance, given the extreme ambiguity of the clues that they may even simply be picking a winner after they receive a bunch of submissions, picking the most creative submission, with no 'competition' in mind.

He is suspending our detective urge to think logically, and forcing us to go with our instincts.

I personally do not think that he has anything to do with the recent 40 million British Pound heist given the severity of the crimes http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&source=hp&q=40+million+pound+heist&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=jD6TSqX9GI2csgOD4rTgDw&sa=X&oi=news_group&ct=title&resnum=1
I have been talking about this with people involved in the Magician community. I am waiting to hear back from someone in the magic community that does feel like Brown has something to do with the heist. He seems to speak with a degree of conviction about this so I am very anxious to hear about his insight. Like I said, I do not think he has anything to do with it but, some of the most obvious clues are directly related to the heist, like the blue BMW running from the cops in the video.....Very interesting..

Also he has many references to 'following the white circle' or black dot.

Lottery: while I think that one of the most logical, and explainable feats for him to be pulling off with all of this would be getting lots of people to play certain lottery numbers or something like that, but being familiar with his work I would say that that is almost not enough, he wouldnt be pushing the limits enough with that, it has to be something that he can prove on the spot.........

I have been scouring magic forums from the UK and they are talking about it way less than we are.

I know this has nothing to do with an ARG but the reason I just got so interested in ARG's is that they can really put your brain to work, and I love doing that, and thats why this is so fun....Also cuz magic bends reality just like ARG's do.

Sounds like we're on the same page, jBlaze! I'm just glad someone else is discussing it here. I think it's really interested and am surprised there aren't more places throwing ideas around. The only other place I've seen for theories is in YouTube comments.

Let me know what you hear from your magic friend!

I think that being involved in ARG's makes viral marketing/subliminal messages like these really interesting.

That's why the blog post the other morning affected me so much.

I've got two theories about the "SATURDAY 1.45AM 22 AUGUST 2009" blog:
http://derrenbrownart.com/blog/2009/08/saturday-145am-22-august-2009/

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. It may decode to a phone number for another 'hidden' competition. I've already acted on this one. The number would decode to: 01452 2082009. Interestingly, the dialling code (the first five digits) corresponds to Gloucester. But I'm digressing. If you give the number a call, it'll ring & then go to answer phone. It's a standard message "Please leave your name and message after the tone". I'm waiting to see whether I get a call back at all. If not, I have a bit of apologising to do - nobody likes answer phone messages left at 3am!

2. The numbers correspond to numbers in the national lottery. The numbers from the title that are certain would be:
01
45
22
08
20
09
The "Saturday" would either be 06 or 07, depending on what you think your last day of the week is. If your week begins on a Monday, it would decode to 06. If your week begins on a Sunday, it'd be 07. There are 7 numbers drawn in the UK national lottery, but every player picks 6.
I'm so tempted to play these numbers for the next few weeks as there have been a few lottery related things in the The Event trailer.

Thoughts?

xo
