I told them in my job app that I was applying for Analytical Methodologist or Staff Operations Office, but that I could serve as a PM Regional Director for my area if they needed one. No mention of what I actually got hired for, though. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say maybe the "soc64" in my new email address refers to "Staff Operations [something]."

I sent a firm message that I wouldn't accept no for an answer, hopefully they'll let me play. If not, I don't think I'll be sending any documents so if I can get a job without that, i'll do it.

considering how they never stipulated how many people[or people per job] they're accepting, the lack of a specific title in that acceptance mail and the need a portfolio[or whatever]
i'd guess that they're accepting people depending on different criteria...

by the by, when did you send the application, ancalime?
and did you get the need a portfolio mail as well?

Sent my application in yesterday (8/22) at about 11:20 AM, got the initial form response back within an hour, no request for a portfolio or LinkedIn profile. They did have my real name from my app, so if they wanted a LinkedIn profile they wouldn't have had to search hard, but I wonder if the portfolio request isn't particular to PM applications.

By the way, if the HR paperwork Jim talks about includes an NDA, I'm totally not sharing any more. Wink

spoiler for The Game follows --

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Mad enough to be pushed to end your own life, you mean?

Like, I get why the movie is fun for people, and intriguing, and has that feeling of potential, but it's really sort of awful what happens to Douglas' character. The Hollywood ending of course has him smiling and feeling 'reborn' by the experience or whatever, and feeling a little more amiable towards his brother, but if this ever happened in real life, there woulda been fisticuffs galore and some pretty hard feelings.

What they do to Douglas' character in the movie is beyond criminal, really. Logistically, it would be extremely difficult to pull it off, as there are just too many moments that rely on him acting in a very specific way at a very specific moment. It's like a fantasy spin on a horror tale full of sadistic, controlling people.

As for this CRS website, I don't really have an opinion, but I thought I'd do my internet fist-shaking-at-the-heavens-thing over The Game, because it sort of boggles my mind that people would ever really want that to happen to them. Beheh. Even though I understand the high-level appeal, it just sours upon closer inspection.

Kind of like Eagle Eye. Someone directing you to do things and go places. Although in that case it was really sadistic.

Oh, definitely. Beyond the dark nature of the story, there are few similarities between The Game and ARGs. Sure, they each have a platformless nature but that's just about where it ends. The biggest discrepancy might actually be the most fun to play with here...

ARGs are frequently collaborative experiences. The Game was anything but collaborative. In fact, the main character was constantly reminded that he could not trust any of those he was closest to - the only person that Nicholas can trust to any degree is an estranged ex. In fact, there was only one person in Nicholas' life that provided consistant out of game information (his attorney, go figure) and yet he was a person that couldn't be trusted because of the evidence that he might be involved in it all. So, one of the objects of The Game was to make the player believe that he was completely and utterly alone. With ARGs, PMs tend to design for collaboration and group play. In fact, some go as far as to create networks and tools for the players just for that purpose.

Which is something that this game may have done - considering those that have been approved to work have been given access to a collaboration setup via google apps. So, are we being set up to be the people that create the game for the Nicholas Van Orton's of the world? Will we be given the opportunity to drive some fiction character to the edge? The idea is definitely intriguing, especially considering how drawn so many people are to being behind the curtain. Can that experience be made into an ARG?

@krystyn: I know what you mean about the film, but the thing is, it wasn't real life, it was a movie. It used the impossibility of certain things to tell the story. If it had gone the way it would in real life the film would have sucked! Also, I think the point it was trying to make was that we are predictable creatures and our actions are not as free as we think, look at performers like Derren Brown, he manages to plat things in peoples head to get them to act a certain way. He was able to get four people to attempt to rob a cash truck with a toy gun just using suggestive people and a program of suggestive semenars.

About a month ago, I told a friend of mine that any ARG based on The Game would have happened by now, if someone was going to do it. He's never going to let me hear the end of this.

Signed up to play but from reading this thread I am going to sign up to work for them as well. Wild spec: what if this turns out to be an inverted ARG, with a character "playing" the game and us, the real players, "PMing" it? That would be wicked cool.
