The Nature of The Game

I'm making this topic because it's something that interests me (and probably some of you, too) but doesn't really belong in any of the topics we have as it doesn't really further the game.

Anyone who has been following up to this point has probably figured out that this isn't a traditional ARG. I'm a first-time player myself, so I'm not quite as taken aback by the various broken rules as those who are uF regulars, but it does seem very clear to me that this is unusual. Up until very recently the game had very few ARG elements, it is clearly not just for uF, and if it is advertising something it's completely unclear what that might be. It's been bothering me a lot how often The Junsui have been posting things to the aim that this is not a game or an advertisement. Specifically, these have me intrigued:

Quote:
The Junsui are not a COMMERCIAL. We are not a GAME. We are the NEW REALITY. INVOKE HER NAME, BECOME INVINCIBLE!

Quote:
YOUR VIDEO GAME REALITY WILL BE FINISHED! [...] YOUR LIFE IS MORE FICTIONAL THAN OURS.

Basically this thread's purpose is to explore what we think this might be about. On the off chance someone other than me actually cares, feel free to commence idle speculation here.

Being new to ARGs, is it customary for them to be as utterly obscure as possible about what they might be leading to?

So far the only clue as to what it might be about is selling tshirts. Laughing

But lets take a look at the themes:

Cloned 'perfect' women;
Feminine fertility cult figures;
Bioweapons;
An assault on Russian goverment in particular;
Retaliation by Russian military;
High-tech counter counter counter counter intelligence going back and forth.

To me, it seems to have a vaguely similar feel to Nine Inch Nail's "reality" of Year Zero.

They also made an ARG about it, and when questioned what their motive was, and replied that it wasn't to promote a product, but to forewarn what things could turn into, and the actions which have already been realized.

I can't see any other connection with that type of situation other than the real life DDOS attacks on twitter and facebook rumored to originate from East Europe which the "blame" fell on Alfa-Tsentr.

We should know even for first time AGR-ites that there was good money and investment and TIME put into this. The quality of the flash productions, let alone the production and printing of tshirts should be enough to prove that. There has to be more after the wall that's going to be torn down comes down.

I'm sure everything will come into focus in due time, but a philosophical look at this experience is definitely a good idea.

Not to mention a particularly good actor playing a particularly unique and odd role extremely well. For HOURS.

For it to be as simple as selling tshirts seems pretty improbable. But as I said, I'm new to ARGs so please forgive me if I'm ignorant of what is normal.

(I just happened to.. fall into this one. Someone posted a link of the fake-Google page to SomethingAwful, I checked it out, then was taken to the NSE page, then Googled stuff and ended up at the trailhead thread. Which I then proceeded to read the entirety of, and became hooked to for some reason. Then I started posting and then oh god I'm stuck and part of it.)

This is definitely not your cookie cutter ARG.

Getting that sort of vibe from what I read might've been what helped capture my interest so strongly. Though, by the time I'd read through the whole Trailhead thread, it was up to the posts where people were declaring the whole thing dead in the water. I guess it isn't quite, yet.

You have to remember that the Year Zero ARG ultimately was designed to help sell a CD and restart Trent Reznor's career after the crapfest that was With_Teeth.

As good as this game is, let's be realistic. So far, we've seen two t-shirts for sale. The game will be good; I have no doubts about that. But, I'm not gonna pretend that there's anything more than marketing behind it.

I'm just here for the ride. Very Happy

Far from dead. I have a feeling it's just really ramping up. A situation like this has to seep for awhile to get a following on both sides of the table. Sympathy and empathy for a group like Junsui, and a hatred for oppression. We have no idea of Junsui actual motives. Just look at the earliest record we have of them.

That youtube video was talking about that guy's wife just up and practicing pagan rites. He asked her POLITELY to stop because he was advised it would bring ill will. She refused. where is the "good" in that? There was no record of him being abusive to her, so what was her reasoning for blatently defying him?

What was their motives then? What are their motives now? Just like in the dark ages, those who sought knowledge had to hide, and form their own clandestine groups of intellectuals which sprouted the Illuminati which translates to the Illuminated. Were they evil? no. were they of the devil? No. They just simply sought truth in a world ruled by lies and oppresive religious oligarchy.

I'm not sure is this is supposed to be some sort of allusion to real world politics at present, or what the motive is, but the formerly addressed beg for answers.

And time will tell.

Mr. Dubrovin gave me his word that we would recieve answers upon return of his latest brief. I have faith in that.

Personally, I don't believe that Trent Rezors sole motivation behind it was financial. I sincerely do believe that most of it really is his own political motivation and beliefs. But that's neither here nor there.

Buckle up kids.

Right now I am leaning towards a cross between social experiment and portfolio piece. This is based on a lot of the meta stuff, but also the way the game is structured. The PM has managed to divide the player base into a bunch of people following a religious cult when, even though its IG, they say some really scary and crazy things, and even attack people's OOG life, and at the same time a group dedicated to helping MoT stop them, even though MoT/A-T seems extremely shady. They have created, at least in my, pretty strong emotions, and I suppose due to those emotions, immersion. Maybe at some point a product will surface and we will therefore see where the money came for this high quality material they put out, but I think it's as simple as what Patrick himself said, they are trying to shift the paradigm for ARGs, and if this turnaround continues they just might succeed.

There was a little bit of that, of course. I mean, it's his creative project, right? He had to have some sort of inspiration. I don't think that he was trying to "start a movement" or "reach out" to anyone, though.

On a lighter note: Some say that the RL U.S. Intelligence agencies are extremely shady...
Look whose here having these discussions with you ;]

Edit: I misspelled intelligence... How convenient.

The way I see it, the ball is going to be in Junsui's court again soon. MoT is "striking back" right now, and I have a feeling they're going to react strongly in some way. Maybe the MoT site will get hijacked, or Dubrovin will be "assassinated/kidnapped" or something else really game-changing will happen.

It seems ridiculous to get so attached to a character, but I really hope Dubrovin doesn't get killed or kidnapped. He's been ridiculously helpful so far, especially compared to the Junsui who haven't really told us anything much except for that "false cage" clue.

That's true I guess but as the saying that we all know tells us there are dirty jobs and someone has to do them.

Don't feel bad about it. It's human emotion.

Think this is bad? Try playing Shadow of the Colossus and tell me about Agro. I seriously was welling up to full blown tears when that happened. I was like 18 back then Razz

Rachel's Walk is going to be just the same I'm sure.

Even worse.... the Something's In The Sea ARG right now... for the sequel to Bioshock 2. all I can say is FUUUUUUUUUUUUU. Saddest crap I've seen in a long time.
