another mystery...

This reminds me of the elevator conundrum:

a short person needs to use a cane to push the higher buttons on an elevator panel --

we could extrapolate from that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The problem with this theory, to me, is that anyone who uses a cane would feel that it was shorter the moment it touches the ground; he wouldn't need to *see* sawdust to be forewarned.

Ha. I know that one, but have heard of similar one: When the elevator stopped, he knew his wife had died.

Occam

Ha. That's the name of the Evil Dwarf!

Forgot to respond: But why would he kill himself if he merely thought the cane was shorter?

So by sawing the good Dwarf's cane the evil Dwarf made him believe he was no longer so short (i.e. he was growing) and no longer the top dwarf (or maybe bottom dwarf) and he therefore killed himself?

Is there something important still missing?

It seems a bit extreme Wink. Was the good dwarf also extremely stupid? You would have thought that he would double-check his height before hanging himself. Wouldn't the relative height of familiar objects (e.g. his bed, the circus canteen table, his fancy trousers etc...) have given him a clue that he was still the same height?

Ha. You would think he would check! But he was a delicate and not too bright little person--the shortest man in the world who worked with the always jealous second tallest man who devised a scheme to drive the littlest one insane: Gradually saw a little from the end of his cane, toss the sawdust under his bed (they were roommates) and make him think he was growing, and thus would lose his status and high (low) position. It worked, that is until, you all solved the mystery!

Thanks for a good time (for me anyway!). I'll post a new one soon. GAG
