ARGs and Academic Programs?
What's the best place for a ludologist?

Are there any academic programs/initiatives/centers at specific colleges and universities ideally suited to the fields of game studies, pervasive game design, interactive/trans-media narratives?

(If so, what level of degrees/scholarship?)

There are quite a few - and more all of the time. I went to Georgia Tech for grad school - at the time it was Information Design & Technology, but has been renamed Digital Media. I discovered it mostly by finding out that several people who had written books or papers that I enjoyed were teaching there. Off the top of my head, I can think of a handful of schools of other schools that have good programs at the graduate level based on friends experiences (MIT, CMU, USC). I'm sure that by the time I click submit on this post, I'll think of a number of others (even more if I consider Europe). I'm not sure how their undergrad programs are (I did my undergrad years ago in a completely unrelated field), but I have friends that went to CMU and MIT and did some amazing things.

So, yeah, there are programs ranging from undergrad to grad to post grad.

MIT's center for collective intelligence must be the gold standard:

Don't forget about relevant work being done at SUNY Buffalo's Department of Media Study. (shameless self-plug?) Embarassed

University of Texas at Dallas: Emerging Media and Communications

Dr. Adam Brackin, who produced the Deus City ARG, is a professor there and has even run an "ARG Lab" in the past couple of years. I'm not sure if that's happening this year, but it looks like a fun and exciting program.

I'm starting my graduate work at University of Houston-Clear Lake in their Digital Media Studies program. It's more geared toward advertising and/or video games, but it's got some very good courses and excellent professors.

The USC School of Cinematic Arts has an experimental new media PhD program called Interdivisional Media Arts and Practice (http://imap.usc.edu), which kind of straddles storytelling and interactive media/game design. I'm working on an ARG dissertation there. The faculty is insanely awesome. Also, the program is so new that no one has completed it yet (it's 3 years old), so there's plenty of room for shaping things to your interests.

remotedevice: were you in Henry Jenkins' Transmedia Storytelling class this semester? Based on the syllabus, I was extremely impressed with the list of practitioners and academics involved in the ARG space Jenkins brought in to speak.

@notgordian Jenkins also taught a doctoral-level class, which I took instead. But yeah, his access to and knowledge of ARG people is pretty impressive. Overall, we're really lucky to have him here.
