I wish I knew a single thing about music composition and reading. All of this is foreign to me. By god, if there was a phone number hidden in all of this gunk then I would probably drop enough bricks to build an apartment complex.

In any case, #24 doesn't sound like Fanfare for a Common Man; sounds more like lounge music in parts. I'm pretty sure that I'm picking up a piano, though again I'm a complete newfag when it comes to music recognition/reading/etc. In any case, if it is connected, we should try to figure out how!

Going back and looking at Fanfare, the first thing that popped up in my head is 'oh man, it's the CBS supersports anthem'. Ha ha, if Alex's actor has been dropping hints about time travel, maybe he was trying to drop oblique hints about the game in other ways... though chances are more than fair that I'm only connecting things in a very roundabout way that wasn't meant to be!

Anyways, Fanfare was used in the 1950's series You Are There, a series of historical recountings. It's apparently been made available to schools on 16mm film for educational purposes. If Fanfare for the Common Man was included and the creators had access to the series, they could have ripped it from said series without having to pay for it...

In any case, next step on this path is to see what those 22 episodes are about? Doesn't necessarily help with finding a potential phone number in the messed up TTA soundbits, however if it connects some of the other WWII subject matter that we've been picking over, there's a chance that we might make some more connections... hopefully!

Also putzing with the #24 music. I'll try to upload the original that I rip from the episode in addition to anything that I mutilate it into that might be useful. ^^; I should probably apologize for your ears in advance, just in case.

puzzle still going?

This is my first post here (or with any sort of ARG stuff), but this sounds right up my ally, so to speak, so I figured I'd jump in.

Is this puzzle still in progress? I'd be happy to see what I can do with it. I have software that will let me create sheet music, and I know music theory.

I realize the music may turn out to be entirely irrelevant, but I'm still up for working on this.

I'm pretty sure that everyone else has given up on it, though please do feel free to give it a shot! We've all stopped for lack of understanding or experience, I think!

I'm working on recreating the notation to the music heard in some of the TTA examples--I should have something to post later today (I copied a shortcut to my flash drive instead of the actual file this morning). There are some trout-worthy things in this, no doubt, but I think I have some new perspectives on it, too

As I think about this, I think a code in the music is unlikely. The music seems to be something pre-existing, so they would have had to find a piece of music that has a code they want, or take something from the music and give it a meaning. Codes and ciphers in music certainly exist--Bach was notorious for spelling his own name. The German pitch-naming system known as Tonhöhe works thus:

Code:

Standard:  C   C#   Db  D   D#  Eb  E  F   F#   Gb   G   G#   Ab  A   A#   Bb  B
German:    C   Cis  Des D   Dis Es  E  F   Fis  Ges  G   Gis  As  A   Ais  B   H

From the TTA music, I'm not coming up with anything that seems understandable, going from the pitches Eb, F, and Bb (note that Eb is the same as D#, and Bb is the same as A#, although the flat "spellings" are undoubtedly what was originally used, assuming that I'm hearing it in the right key, and that it hasn't been pitch-shifted). I haven't determined all of the notes yet, though.

The chord progression would be written as I - ii - V - I - V. I don't know if 1 2 5 1 5 has any meaning or significance to anyone. Regardless of pitch-shift, the numerals for the chords will remain the same. As far as key, it's definitely Major. The clip is in Eb, a logical key. I would guess that it's not pitch-shifted, as the distortion doesn't match with that. If it is, it's probably only down a step from F, which would be another logical key.

Rhythmically, the music seems to be in 6/8 time. I think it sounds a little older than Sousa, but I could be wrong. It has a march feel, but it sounds like there are timpani in it, which would suggest that it is not played by a marching band.

I'm trying to isolate the music in #24 to see what I can get from it...no luck there yet. Maybe after I get home from work.

I've also looked up 6/8 marches through wikipedia, and famous American marches, after which I just looked for some likely candidates (there are too many to listen to everything). More than likely, if there is significance to the music, it won't be so much in the content of the music, but the name of it piece or something about its composer or history. And, of course, the music might be incidental.

The music can always be incidental, but the fact that you're going over it with a fine-toothed comb is pretty damned awesome! Smile Best of luck tonight when you get more time to work through it!

I may be missing a few notes, but this is roughly what the scored music for that clip would look like. It's a little simplified, but I can't pick out what other harmonies might be there. Maybe someone will recognize some sort of visual pattern, or recall something from high school marching band.

The midi file gives a "clean" recreation of the audio, which might be something more recognizable to someone.

I'm also going to look into the music of Johannes Brahms and Carl Czerny, as they seem likely candidates for a more "symphonic" march prior to Sousa.

(Fun fact: The "Monty Python" theme is Sousa's "Liberty Bell.")
