Reckon we're supposed to decompile something somewhere? Seems like there should be a next step on the site somewhere, since they've stopped a-twittering...

Definitely lurking this one.

=edit=
the webpage no longer accepts the password, and now only gives a P.-) .. all of the links do this.

If you wait a little, the "P.-) will start blinking and you will see the page.

I noticed that if you go to http://blackbeardsport.freeoda.com/index.php/home/jollyroger/the-shipyard there's a list of what sounds like pirate ship names, they all have a cross next to them, except the bottom one called "Windskipper"

Looks like this:

Code:
Jeffer
[X] Quake
[X] Bond
[X] Redskin
[   ] Windskipper

Ok, we've gotta be missing something somewhere.

We have a list of crew, including 2(?) captains, or 1 captain and first mate..
A list of ships, and an odd looking balance in the treasury: 849.391289x. And lastly a reference to a Queen who is supposed to show up "When Sol comes yonder!". One of the tweets mentioning the Cove led us to the webpage - but what are we missing - obviously something- as things seem to have died down a bit..

Any ideas? I'm fresh out..

There was a new tweet from Piratebeard today
Quote:
Piratebeard @CrossedBone We be in the news! http://pastebin.ca/1602810

Which leads to a page with a bunch of code waiting to be decrypted...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's in Base64 which decrypts into HTML. It looks better in that format, but here's what it says:
The Wendinglinton Report

Reddington Sinks; Pirates to Blame, Says Owner
by Gregory Wendinglinton

Another day, another report of a ship's demise. But this time, we have a lead on the cause, from none other than the ship's owner, Ernest Jeffer, the famous shipping tycoon.

The ship in question is the Reddington, one of the best in his fleet. The ship met its fate off the coast of Florida, on its way to Hawaii, where it was scheduled to deliver and pick up some cargo, then return to port. Its mission was never completed, though, as it had a run-in with none other than pirates.

"Pirates?" you say. "In this day and age?" As unlikely as it seems, Mr. Jeffer has told The Wendinglinton Report that he has received warnings and threatening message from a group of people that call themselves "The Scourge of the Eighth". "They're a gang of pirates," said Jeffers. "They make their money in looting and extortion, demanding high fees from shipowners for the safe passage of their vessels."

As you may be aware, this is just the latest in a rash of ship sinkings in recent times. These sinkings, according to Jeffer, are all connected.

There's a name in there that's very familiar as well as some new information. I googled all of the new names but didn't come up with anything. I don't want to say anymore and give it away, until everyone has had a chance to read through it all.

Also, if there was a 2nd page - I wasn't able to get to it. I'm not real handy with HTML. Embarassed

The "next page" leads to "./story.php?id=9299r-f033-04840&page=2", and i have had no luck with that one yet.

The Lodge and the Shipyard sems pretty clear to me, the Treasury though is a mystery to me. Looks like it could be an ip adresse?

So, if you don't mind explaining - how is it the Lodge and Shipyard seem clear? I just want to make sure I'm on the same page. As far as the Treasury - I had considered the same thing at first - but there are too many numbers. Unless of course they're using IPV6, but I find that unlikely.

So including the items I mentioned above, as to what we have - we also now have a "newspaper" that mentions Jeffers having a ship hijacked off the coast of Florida by the "Scourge of the Eight". Unfortunately I haven't been able to find anything about any of those subjects in my searches.

There was also a new tweet from CrossedBone to Piratebeard:
Quote:
CrossedBone: @Piratebeard I think Ol' Jeffer needs a bit more persuasion, don't you?

ok so a little history

Captain Blackbeard was one of the most famous pirates of the English sea during the "Golden Age of Piracy" (18th Century). His main ship was the Queen Anne's Revenge - which is what im guessing the Queen arriving "When Sol comes yonder!" is referencing....queen being his ship, when sol comes yonder being the the next sunrise.

If you hear the name Edward Teach/Thatch by the way, that was Blackbeard's real name.

Other names in the lodge...pretty much your basic "pirate names" kinda the classic disnified names.

oh and uh the name of the gang of pirates "Scourge of the Eighth" - referencing the currency in those days which were called "pieces of eight".

Oh yes, I'm sorry.

The Lodge is a list of members in his/their crew, and the [M] or [F] means female/male as far as i can see. And Blackbeard = Piratebeard on twitter, while Pirate Pete = CrossedBone on twitter.

The Shipyard is a list of ships, listed under the name of their owner. And the cross could be ships that have been looted.

The Treasury is still a mystery to me.

Ok, then we're on the same page. I thought maybe you were able to glean some sort of arcane information from them.

I'm really getting the feeling that at this point, we just have to wait and see what it is we're supposed to do. At least I hope so. Cuz If we're missing something I have no idea what it is.

FWIW, 849.391289x looks like a Dewey decimal number to me. No luck finding a book to match it as of yet, though.

I thought exactly the same thing about the dewey number, but couldn't find anything to match it with.

849 would put it in literature, specifically provencal and Catalan (the 840s are 'romance languages'). I worked in libraries for a few years, but usually the 800s weren't very finely subclassified; you'd just use 849 for most books of provencal / Catalan literature in my experience.

I have a mother who has been a librarian since before I was born, if people would like I can ask her opinion?

Sounds like a really good idea, if you ask me.

OK, I spoke to her. She said, theoretically, it's possible you could subdivide that far, but that's a LOT of subdivision.

For those of you who don't know Dewey, the bit before the decimal point refers to the general main classification of the book (in this case catalan literature). The bit after the decimal point more closely narrows down the topic. So, it might have a number for nautical stories, then one for submarines, then one for wrecks... or so on.

You'd need a few Dewey set of books to work out what that whole number referred to though.
