User Generated Procedural ARG
Everyone's a pM Everyone's a player?

Note: This is a wake you up in the middle of the night idea and I would like to put this out there so I can maybe get one more hour of sleep before work

Basics:

Dinner party murder mystery type role assignment based on interest survey
Each player chooses how fleshed out their char is and by extension the game world

Each char is spotlighted for one week of their choosing out of the year
During this time they can reveal clues to their personal piece of the games overall puzzle

Random concepts:

Player created...
Online personals or dating site
Business pages
In game currency

Each player guesses who is who throughout the game and we see who is right at the end

I would produce a weekly e newsletter up to a monthly magazine based on level of player interest

Do you think you guys would be up for something like that?

A week's involvement? I'd give it a shot.

The big problem I see with this is that it's going to be a really fine line to tread between playerbase and length. Say you make it a 2-month game: that means you can only have 8-9 players, alienating most people who'd like to take part. Conversely, if you attempt to let 50 people play, the game takes most of a year and people will get bored.

Also, while this wouldn't be bad for a group activity lasting a few hours, for a 2 or 3 month game one or more of the players will most likely end up dropping out for various reasons, and if all players are significant pieces of the puzzle then that puts you in a bind. In theory, you could then take someone from a backup "waiting list" but that just adds a layer of administrative complexity to it that nobody really wants.

All that said, I'd probably give it a go, but be liable to drop out for one reason or another.

I feel like what you're describing is close to what they did for Evelyn Crane. Looks like it has mixed reviews. I signed on, but dropped out quickly for a variety of reasons.
