Everyone here does know that all of this is promotion for the upcoming movie right? Granted it is a REALLY cool way to boost tickets sales when it comes out but none the less thats what it is I do believe.

I hope Me_44 isn't saying people here have been duped into thinking the IHC is real -- obviously everyone posting to a site called Unfiction knows that this is an ARG. I want to take that post as a well-intended reminder that the ARG story doesn't exist in a vacuum, that the story isn't being presented purely for our entertainment. This ARG is a promotional tool, not just a fun story, and yes we also know that. The need to remind us seems driven by the opinion that is is a BAD thing.

The post didn't say, "you know it's all fake," but rather, "you know this is a marketing campaign", right? That's how I choose to read it. The answer to that question is, "so what?"

Maybe there is a tinge of "why are you acting like you don't know what the plot of the ARG story is, when we all know what the plot of the movie will be?" I wondered that myself, when the blueprints were hinting at a space ship launch, while the IHC public website itself talks of plans to send colonies into orbit. Why was this being treated as a leak of secret intel?

Part of playing an ARG is being willing to suspend logic at times, wink at the camera (and web analytics watching our stats), and pretend we don't know it's fiction. During "I Love Bees" I frequently argued with the players who came in with prior knowledge about the Halo novels not to "spoil" the unfolding story for the rest of us. Similarly, we all know we could go to IMDB for clues, but this ARG hasn't told us to do so.

So yeah, it's a little like that picture-in-picture feature on your TV set. You can choose to watch multiple adaptations of a story, and even skip ahead to see how that other production of it ends, or you can choose to watch just this storyline play out in its own window. That doesn't mean we aren't aware of other versions -- or the fact that the show has a commercial sponsor.
