DO you know WHY it's going out as "spam"? Who's your web and mail host?

It's good to test manually sent emails before doing it officially - look at the headers, check to see if the relay server adds any warnings or notes. Verify required security settings in the script set by the mail provider... sometimes you might need to provide a legitimate (verified) email address for the relay if you're intending to have the From address different.

Usually, the first indicators of spam are in the email headers themselves, then the spam flaggers will check content and such. So yeah, even a simple From, To, subject and message content could be considered spam if the mail relay server doesn't 'trust' the sender.

In short, check all the mail settings, and any security requirements for the mail server you're using to have it consider your sent mail and/or script.

Yeah, most SMTP servers won't relay mail from email addresses they don't know or trust, so unless you're using a hotmail SMTP server, making the 'from' different will likely raise a flag on the SMTP relay when it's being sent, and if it does relay (send out) your email, it could very well be adding that warning email header.

If you want to send mass email without the technical stuff, I'd look into a mass mailing service, or mailing list script or something along those lines. Creating your own SMTP mailer script will be asking for tighter security and potential spam flagging if you don't have a trusted account with the SMTP provider.

The mechanism you use to send the mail usually makes no difference; I send all my mail through a ASP.NET page that's in a password protected, administrative subdirectory of the website in question.

The sender usually has to match the domain that is found using a reverse lookup.

For example, if I send mail as "info@rachelswalk.com", the IP address from where that mail comes from should match the reverse lookup for "mail.rachelswalk.com", which in GoDaddy's case it does. Even if I use "mail.rachelswalk.com" as a relay it's fine; the address doesn't need to be the FIRST in the chain of IP addresses, but it should be in there somewhere.

Secondly, you have to carefully analyze your message content. There are certain words in an email body that will almost definitely flag you as spam. Putting in garbage text will also do it (which caused me problems once; I attempted to email a Vigenere cypher and it was looked at like garbage spam).

Mails that also contain more images than text could be considered spam as well.
