Was this all just a prank gone wrong?
So, after browsing the SA forums, I've decided to post what many others there think as well as myself after weighing everything together.

Here is what I believe happened:

This Alex person decides he wants to make some kind of film, and asks his friend Brian to help. Brian enlists Tim, his neighbor, and Sarah, the girl we don't know much about, to assist. Also possibly others.

Alex begins to loose patience throughout the filming, and becomes nasty towards the members of the crew, such as in Entry 9. However, by then the prank will have already been in full swing; this is just to illustrate that he's been cranky with them for a while now. As a result, Brian and Tim alternate dressing up as the SM to mess with Alex. Alex is obviously very stressed out and possibly mentally unhinged before Marble Hornets even begins.

All of the crew members are NEVER seen together when the Slender Man is somewhere. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also, in Entry 12, Alex is the only one who seems upset by the Slender Mans' appearance, everyone else is just like "Whatever, he's there, ignore him, he'll move". Like any normal person would be, Alex is disturbed by the creepy tall man in a suit standing there like a creepy ass mofo and approaches him to find out what he's doing.

In Entry 14, Alex kills the Slender Man somehow and finds out that it's Brian. If Tim lives next to Brian, then why doesn't he know what he's up to when interviewed in video #15? That's a bit strange.

This leads to Alex becoming ridden with guilt, so he gives the tapes away to J with the hope that maybe he will find out what happened. Perhaps he DID start to believe that there might be a SM out there, somewhere?

After all, Slender Man was invented on the premise to be a parody of how imaginary myths and folk tales can become known as fact overtime, such as in the case of the Mothman sightinings in the 60's.

Just my thoughts on the prank theory.

how would explain the distorted/removed audio?

how does totheark come into play?

why would alex let j view the videos of essentially his murder?

Distorted audio= perhaps he's trying to make it seem like something paranormal or supernatural happened?

Totheark could be Sarah/the girl/some other person, who knows what happened and is trying to let others know.

And the videos- J says that Alex told him to burn them.

Actually Alex said he was going to burn them, until J asked for them.

Your explanation doesn't work in entry 12. Alex says "Here's Tim" at the end, about the same time SM appears. If Tim was essentially disguised as the SM, Alex either wouldn't recognize him, or would have to be already aware of the prank. The only conclusion is that Tim is approaching from a different direction.

 		I'm following you insofar as it being a prank on Alex, but I don't think he killed anyone. That's certainly not blood spray on his face, it's a bleeding scalp.

Also, the idea that Alex would give the tapes away for someone else to burn is stupid. Why not burn them himself? Alex wanted J to watch the tapes, and THEN burn them.

Yeah, if I killed someone, I'd have burned them long before someone had the chance to ask about it.

I disagree, Alex didnt seem upset at all, like the rest of the people there he just saw someone stand there, and since he was the one shooting the film, he was also the one responsible for asking random people not to stand in the background when they are filming.

 		SM appears while Alex and J are location scouting in Entry #13. I'm assuming that they did that before the production even began, back when Alex was acting more normal.

Then again, if that did happen before, then why does Alex act so normal when SM shows up on the set in Entry #12?

I think we need to establish a timeline for the videos.

But if it was just a prank you'd think somebody would have let J in on it at some point. Tim would have known about it so why didn't he tell J about it in entry 15?

Not saying I buy it, but just playing devil's advocate, Tim blames himself in part. He and his friend emotionally tortured a guy to the point that he killed his friend.

Consider that the death might have been accidental, say during the chase in entry 4. Brian shows up outside the house as SM, peeks in the windows, and Alex comes bursting out with a gun or a knife or a baseball bat, whatever. Next thing he knows, Brian is trying to run away from a deranged, sleep deprived Alex while wearing stilts and a mask over his face, plus having long extensions on his arms that prevent him from removing said mask. Running through the park, he trips over just about anything, rock, branch, tree root, sprinkler, etc. and breaks his neck.

In this case, Alex isn't guilty of murder and Tim, in fact, is a party to the more serious crime. He and Alex dispose of the body together and agree to keep everything a secret, but the guilt proves too much for Alex, who's already been pushed beyond his emotional brink.

Kind of doubt it, and kind of hope that's not the case, but there's at lest a theory.

 		IF this were a prank, here's what I think.

-Tim and Brian decide to prank Alex, as he is becoming harsh on set.
-One of the two dresses up as SM and starts stalking Alex
-As Alex spirals downwards into madness, he becomes more and more sleep deprived and agitated
-Tim and Brian start leaving dead animal corpses on Alex's front lawn during the night.
-Alex starts filming himself to prove his sanity
-Brian dresses up and peeks in Alex's windows
-Alex starts after Brian with a (Yet undetermined) weapon
-The results are unknown, but there are four possible outcomes.
+Brian trips and breaks his neck
+Alex kills Brian, not knowing who it is
+Alex finds out who it is and kills Brian in a rage
+Brian gets away and lives
-Alex stops filming and tries to burn the tapes
-J receives the tapes
-Alex moves away, his mind beyond the point of snapping.
-J finds the tapes in 2009 and posts...
and so on and so forth.
