Double post Wink

Darcy "confirmed" that the numbers are important:

Quote:

I think some of those do look familiar, yes... I'm fairly sure the
first was the first on your list there, 21. I'm never going to
remember them all though. I do know it was about 5 o'clock when I was
there... Maybe there's a timetable or something you could use to work
out the other numbers?

I ignored the fact that she was there when the museum closed (5 o'clock) so it should be possible to figure out the six bus numbers.

I mean, it would be literally impossible to figure out which buses had which numbers on and which buses passed her. Just seems like if that info were needed right now it would have been given.

I do think they are important, why else should she give us those detailed information: at which street/station she was, the direction of the buses and that she missed to write down those numbers.

EDIT: And we have now 8 numbers that would fit into those wheel. But still now clue what to do...

How do we get having 8 numbers have I missed something?

There are 9 buses running ths street, since 64 and X64 are basically the same number we would have 8. Nevertheless, due to Darcy's email I now think this is not relevant. I assume we have to figure out the 6 bus numbers that serve the Museum after 5 o'clock starting with bus 21.

OK using the timetables from the cartograph.co.uk/stoke_bus website

The buses that run at that time are

21, 21a, 31,64, 101 and 350

I cannot seem to find the timtable for the 33 running by the potteries. The 58a doesnt run that late and I cant find the 94 running into Hanley other that at 08.45 in the morning.

So that makes our bus times and numbers as follows unless someone can find another bus going past this stop. the time it takes to get between hanley bus staion and Bethseda street is apparently 2 mins.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
17.07 - 21, 17.15-101, 17.17-64, 17.27-31 17.30-21a, 17.32-350, 17.37-21, 17.39-101, 17.55-21a, 17.57-21, 18.07-64, 18.15-101. assuming that all the usses with the same number have the same codes, then I think I may be missing a bus number.

I feel a call to the bus company coming on maybe

Not using a spoiler now. I have some different times than brownowl23 using http://www.travelinemidlands.co.uk

17:02 --> 31
17:04 --> 21 (I do not see from where you got 17:07)
17:15 --> 101
17:17 --> 21A and 31 and 64
17: 27 --> 21 (AGAIN) (so I would have 5 buses before 21 comes the 2nd time, why do you have 31 and I have 21?

Nevertheless (since I do not understand what I am looking for) some more:

17:32 --> 350
17:37 --> I have no 21

Auz youve found a far better timetable wesite than me. Yours we can guarentee is current so I think its fair to say go with that.

Ive fopund that the 58 does run at that time round Hanley so that would make our 6th bus number.

So my suggestion would be our bus numbers would be

17:02 --> 31 we know the first bus she saw was the 21.
17:04 --> 21
17:15 --> 101
17:17 --> 31 and 64 there was also a 21a but I think this would be the same numbers as on the 21
17: 27 --> 21 (AGAIN) another 21 so one of the multiples she saw.
17: 22-->54
17:32 --> 350
17:37 --> I have no 21 another 21 so not counted.

So our order of bus numbers = 21, 101, 31 and 64 or vice versa, 54 350

now to figure how they give us a location.

Just had this from Darcy

Hi

I've had a lot of time to sit and think about the buses, since I don't really have anything else I can do, except continually try and deflect questions from Charlene about how Flynn is getting on. I remembered this, and I don't know if its helpful to you at all... It was just after 5pm, and one of the staff from the museum ran outside just as the place was shutting. She was one of the ones I'd been talking to about the Hoard earlier on. Ever so nice, she was. Anyway, she asked me if the 31 had gone past yet or not, and I said I hadn't a clue. This was just after I'd seen the first bus with the numbers on... that must've been the 21 I remembered. Anyway, maybe a minute or so later a bus pulled up and she got very excited and got on it... I guess now that it must have been the 31, though I never looked at the front because it had numbers on the side that I was too busy writing down.

Hope that's some help to you!

How's it going with the puzzling? Have you any idea where I need to go next yet? To be honest, right now I'd rather be going anywhere than just sitting around here feeling useless. Poor Flynn, I do hope he's alright...

I dont know much about cipher wheels with numbers. Can you make a cipher wheel out of our bus numbers and the numbers on the buses? I'm keen to learn how cipher wheels with numbers work.

Got the same email with the employee catching the 31. So I think the order is

21
31 the bus came a little bit later than scheduled ( - or the PM made a mistake Wink )
101
64
54
350

Let's try all those things I already tried with this new sequence.

Assuming the list we have is correct (i.e., assuming that buses ran on time, which is a bit of a stretch), then maybe her 21 is the schedule's 21a? So it could be:

17:02 --> 31 we know the first bus she saw was the 21.
17:04 --> 21
17:15 --> 101

17:17 --> 21a, 31 and 64
17: 27 --> 21 (AGAIN) another 21 so one of the multiples she saw.
17: 22-->54
17:32 --> 350

BTW, A cut and copy error occurred: All references to bus 54 should be bus 58.
I think I might have found something. But I first want to check for Darcy's opinion before posting here (else I might confuse everybody).

I've looked into it some more, and I came up with the same timetable as Auz. I'll put it below just because I filled it out to until a little past 6pm. I don't think the 58 passes by the right place - she says she was sitting in front of the museum on broad street watching the buses go by right to left, which would be in front of her. The 58 crosses the other direction and stops across the street, not in front of the building. I did find an additional line, though, the PLUM, that stops in (what I think is) the right place.

17:04 - 21
17:15 - 101
17:17 - 21A, 31, 64
17:27 - 21
17:32 - 350
17:37 - PLUM
17:40 - 101
17:42 - 21A
17:49 - 21
18:06 - 64
18:07 - 21

New location

OK, I think I got it - at least Darcy thinks so Wink

It leads to Sutton Hoo -an ancient site.

This is how I did it
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

General idea:
Reorder the lines with respect to the bus numbers (lowest at top) and calculate the colums.

I started with 21, 31, 101, 64, 58, 350 but did not get useful numbers. So I thought maybe the PM did another error - I mean maybe another bus was late.

So I rearanged and changed bus 64 and 58 (which means ordering the numbers from Darcy 1,2,5,3,4,6)

For each colums I got one number resulting in
520922 133933

These could be used as coordinates (52.0922 1.33933) leading to Sutton Hoo - ancient site.

And this is what Darcy answered:
Quote:

Sutton Hoo! That sounds perfect! If what you and your friends have
told me about the hoard is true, well, this fits really well. Sutton
Hoo is famous for an Anglo Saxon discovery. If you don't know about it
you should go and look it up, it's fascinating stuff.

There's not much point me going now, since it's dark and the visitor
centre won't be open... First thing tomorrow though, i'll be off down
south!

Thank you, you've given me some hope again that we'll find Flynn and
everything just might be alright...

Darcy

Well done Auz. I have to admit that my other half had suggested your method but at that point last night I only had 5 bus numbers and of course my times were a bit off so it really wouldnt have helped. He of course is sitting there as mr smug mug right now!

Wonder what Sutton Hoo will bring up for us at least there is a theme going on at present Anglo Saxon finds.

not that it matters anymore given AUZ's fantastic find, but a cipher wheel with numbers works the exact same way as with letters. there is just the extra variable of attributing letters to each of the numbers (and in some cases symbols).
