Video distortion?

So I poked around and did some searches, and I'm not entirely sure how to go about distorting my video - pixelating it, adding jumpiness, splitting the image. If I want to do something more complex than saving really low quality, would I have to buy a higher-end (higher than free, anyway) program?

I'm on a Mac, for the record, and pretty strapped for cash. *sheepish* If worse comes to worst, I can always recruit for help here, but I'd like to try to manage it on my own, if possible.

Funny you sould ask...I was recently looking into video distortion myself and I have Sony Vegas (something like $600). It has all kinds of great video distortion filters built into it but the static type effect I wanted was not so easy to do. I posted to the main Vegas forum and someone had an interesting suggestion - render it, play it, mess with the analog signal, re-record it. If you manually jiggle the plug you can get all kinks of easy static for free.

O.k., not exactly what you asked for but think about it - if you want to hash a video signal then there is no better way to degrade a signal than first turn it into good old analog and then mess with the signal path.

To do exactly what you were asking for, however, is probably going to take some $$. There are a bunch of home video editing tools out there for around $100 but I'm not sure if they'll do what you want. You can do most of that with the over $500 tools but sounds like that's a bit over your price range.

Funny thing about the internet... you can find pretty much anything for free... Money's not a problem on the internet.

I used to have a great program that created television snow and it was a free program from the demoscene but I can't find it now! Sad
